How much time do you spend on your IPad ?

I think I spend too much time on my IPad. Each morning I check the news, see if I have any emails, check out the tennis on TennisTV, look at the weather, then contribute to GN.

In the late afternoon/evening I fit in an episode of Line of Duty as well. No wonder I am behind with my paperwork and of course I like socialising as well. The word self indulgent comes to mind ?

Sadly I don’t read books as much as I did and have decided that needs to change.

In my case it`s my laptop. I spend about 1 and a half to 2 hours on there in the afternoon, and the same again at night. A bit different to my daughter, she`s on hers from getting up in the morning right through to going to bed late at night.

I think that the question really is, “If you were not on the IPad, what would you be doing instead? Are you neglecting more valuable areas of your life? I suspect not.

I used to spend time knitting, crochet and gardening, looking after Elderly relatives and GCs. I am unable to do any of those things now. I think without my I pad I would be very lonely and to me it is a valuable part of my life,

Through it I am able to learn about the world, read newspapers look up anything I need to know. I can reach out to those who share my interests and offer my advice where I know it will be appreciated. More importantly I can ask for advice without troubling my nearest and dearest. Through Gransnet and Mumsnet I see into the Lives of others and very often it makes any problems I have pale into insignificance.

I think I find it most valuable for keeping my mind active. I love card playing but have no-one to share this with, so the endless card games satisfy this need. I do lots of online puzzles soduko, crosswords and jigsaws which I find better than watching tv.

I am taking part in clinical trials for depression at the moment and it is based on sleep. Very strict sleeping pattern and no phone after bed time. I must admit I panicked at the thought of it but very soon, shutting the kitchen door on my phone was quite relieving. I now look forward to bed and my book and fall asleep much quicker.
However, first thing I go for when I get up, even before the kettle is flicked on...... yes my phone and there starts another day of slavery to it.

I like your perspective littleflo.
I am on my phone often. However I rarely watch TV and I do still read quite a bit. I play scrabble with my two closest friends and a few others . Messenger is used to talk to a couple of friends overseas
Sometimes I think I am too involved herb scrabble and chats with friends and I just want to read a book lol. Yeppers also online to easy to just buy/borrow another book on the kindle
Oh I also do a lot of shopping online

Sudoku, codeword and polygon and solitaire.
But if I have something better to do then I put the i-pad down.
I still manage to rack up an average of about 3 hours a day.
I'm on it in the evening so it takes my mind off all the totally uninteresting programmes my DH watches on TV.
Lof TSWine and Flog it and that dreadful little man from Conwy who is soon pleased with himself!
Sometimes i'm on it on a Saturday morning when I'm supposed to be doing paperwork on the big computer!!!

Matelda, that is so clever to learn Russian as it is a difficult language. St. Petersburg is lovely, you must go to the Winter Palace, amazing place. What an honour to be included in the wedding ceremony. You must report to GN on your return.

I think I spend about an hour each morning and night on my iPad. And sometimes in the afternoon, when I'm lazing on the armchair ?

Rissybee Sat 06-Apr-19 10:20:11

Thank you GNs, you’ve made me so happy! I’m not unusual like my DH thinks I am. iPad, iPhone, laptop - they’re all in use for a large part of the day. Recipes, information, news, opinions, socialising, photos, genealogy, YouTube, jigsaws, sudoku and Patience!

Funnygran Sat 06-Apr-19 10:26:15

I wouldn't be without it but admit it can be a time waster. I've just come upstairs to get ready to go shopping, checked my emails in the study and found this morning's Gransnet one. So half an hour later I'm finally about to go shopping!

Craftycat Sat 06-Apr-19 10:40:48

Quite a bit but not nearly as long as I spend reading.
It is a tool - a very useful one too & I miss it like mad if PC not working ( although I do have 2 tablets!!)
DH works in IT & we have about 5 PCs in the house. (I only use my own though!)

I don't have an iPad and don't use my Android tablet, but I do spend a large part of the day on my laptop or phone. This generally replaces the time that previously I would spend reading books or newspapers. Books are now usually at bedtime only.

I spend far too much time with my iPad. I have a subscription for the Times/Sunday Times, shop online (live long way from any large town), Facebook, FaceTime, email, texting etc etc. Never watch daytime TV apart from lunchtime news sometimes. No wonder I have bad eyes.

Matelda Sat 06-Apr-19 10:57:05

I surely will report back on my experiences at the wedding in St Petersburg, Buntybunny21. I think that everyone has some secret ambition, some scarily difficult challenge to face up to, but (speaking for myself) in doing so, I have truly come alive. And oh, the wonderful and unforeseeable rewards!

crazyH Sat 06-Apr-19 11:21:25

wow Matelda ....... what an honoured position!! I have been to StPetersburgh just as a stop on the cruise and went to the Winter Palace which houses great works of art. Enjoy !!

I’ve start limiting my time on the net and re started my reading habit. Although at the moment I do concentrate more on audible books as I’m awaiting an operation to put right something that went wrong when I had my cataract done last year.Since then I haven’t had my specs renewed and have found reading difficult fir longer periods. But just bought myself 4 new books in anticipation of improvement in near future. I do like playing games on my I pad and do use it as my home life is so boring. I do a lot of looking after of grandkids...which covers 6 hours a day three days a week... I do all cooking and cleaning and gardening at my house and a lot of work at my daughters.... I swim 3 times a week and cycle 20 miles and walk at least 10 miles. All this as well as being inactive on my devices. It beats day time tv any day.

I must admit, not being very mobile at the moment, I do spend a lot of time on my smart phone mainly because I am not interested in the sort of programmes my husband has on the TV. Although most of the time he isnt watching the programme but playing games on his phone as does my son when he visits and then has the cheek to tell me I am stuck to my phone all the time. My desk top computer has come in handy in the last 3 months when I have been translating the results of all the scans I have had into English and printing them. The internet is a mine of information at our fingertips and I am sure we oldies use it as such maybe more than most young people who spend a lot of time playing games.
I looked at the pile of books sitting on the chest of drawers this morning and have decided that in the bedroom I will read a book instead of looking at my phone . Maybe my examole will encourage my DH to put his phone down too as his doctor has told him he should not use his phone in the bedroom as it is causing his difficulties in falling asleep.

Littleflo I also spend time doing card games and jigsaws but have now discovered Words with Friends playing scrabble with my own friends on Facebook and also others around the world. I look on it as keeping the old brain cells active.

Anniebach Sat 06-Apr-19 11:56:19

I can’t leave my house, depend on my iPad to shop, as I live alone I enjoy Killer Sudoku, crosswords, scrabble, talking to me grandchildren with messsges, emiling because I can’t use a pen now, and GN is my only companions

Janiepops Sat 06-Apr-19 12:03:43

6 or 7 hours a day! Shopping takes ages cos I research before I buy. In the old days I would have trailed round all the shops, now, I visit the websites and read tons of reviews etc .So for example, last thing I bought was a tower room air cooler ( anticipating another hot summer!!!) so I looked at, Curry’s, Argos, John Lewis, B&Q, Dunelm etc etc, Plus Amazon, E bay, Google, it’s takes an hour or so, but get the best item in my budget, at very best price, (was Dunelm this time).DHL and postman say “Hello Jane” when I answer the door!!

Willow3 Sat 06-Apr-19 13:02:43

Yes I spend ages on laptop, ipad and phone checking emails, facebook, words with friends and candy crush which is so addictive!! I also check gransnet and mumsnet daily! I don't use them in the evening but sometimes check phone while watching TV with hubby. I will cut down in the summer as like to spend time outside and read my kindle in the sun.

maddyone Sat 06-Apr-19 13:28:49

Sometimes too much, other times, very little.
I do clear or respond to my emails daily.
I use search engines quite a lot to find out information.
I read the paper most days online.
And I do jigsaws frequently online.

I used to think my car was the most important thing in my life and wouldn't be able to live without it, but it's changed now to my laptop. It is addictive and with an enquiring mind like mine there is no end to the facts and general knowledge online. I've learnt to play chess, card games I never understood. Then there is Skype, Facebook, Emails, audio books to borrow from the local library, and of course Grans net. It's a wonder I get anything else done. I don't even watch tv anymore, can't spare the time for it.

Kacee Sat 06-Apr-19 14:52:44

Too much but it is so useful. I do lots of on line shopping, play solitair and word games, I am catching up on past In The Line of Duty and yesterday went on youtube and found out how to fix my Dyson.

Happysexagenarian Sat 06-Apr-19 14:55:15

Too much! Emails, browsing, shopping, seeking information and playing Scrabble while watching TV in the evenings. But I can't imagine not having online access now, it does make many aspects of daily life a lot easier.
