Card games?

We are on holiday with our daughter and 9 year old granddaughter. In an effort to get her off her iPad, we’re teaching her card games. Apart from the usual ones like sevens (obviously snap etc) what else can you suggest? We’ve got a Rummikub which is going down well too. Thanks for any suggestions.

I recommend Cheat as well. Also, various forms of Patience can keep you occupied for ages.

My daughter taught her grandma to play Poker (Texas Hold'em variety). Within minutes they were playing for pennies at which point daughter learned very fast never to play cards for money with her Gran.

Stop the bus, Chase the Ace, knock-out whist, rummy and Pinochle go down well with grandchildren 7-19. Crib is another favourite and if you have a crib board, fives and threes with dominoes is another hit.

No dominoes now but when you have them available try 3s and 5s. Try to make a multiple of 3 or 5 at the ends of the train added together. For example double 6 on one end and three on the other makes 15, which scores 8 because it's 5 lots of 3 and 3 lots of 5. We used a cribbage board to score and it kept us entertained for ages.

Ours all love UNO. One of the most used games I have ever bought. Well worth the 4.99 I paid for it.

9 card brag- I taught my 7 year old granddaughter it very easily, starting with 4 then 7 cards, also Pontoon - good for revision of addition number bonds up to 21.

Whist is a good start for them to learn Bridge (a useful social skill!). We loved Canasta when the kids were small. Apart from cards, we also enjoyed Scrabble and Lexicon £4.42

There are two card games that our granddaughters (9 and 12) play with each other and with us all the time.....Uno and Golf. We are always playing cards with them - and when we go on holiday we keep a daily total of the scores and then total them up at the end of the holiday to see who is the Grand
Prize Winner! It really is lots of fun and a great way to enjoy being altogether.

Bezique - great memories of playing as a child. Score cards available on line or just add on paper

Not sure how many packs you have but here are some ideas: Cheat was a favourite with several children, Racing Demon (a different design pack - each player needs a whole pack), Fish, Spit, Whist, Rummy, Knockout whist, 5 card Brag, Chase the Ace, Blackjack (and even Canasta and Poker with help)!
Some children take to card games quickly. Some don't. I've played most of these with my 11 year old grandson who likes card games and is happy to learn.

I had a friend when I was 10 who played a lot of Cribbage with her grandfather and taught me - but I was never a big fan of this and don't remember playing it with my children till they were in their teens.

We played a lot of card games and the younger ones picked it up by playing hands with adults or older siblings first. Strangely only one of my children went on to play Bridge... but of course it was the one who played with her grandparents and sister.

At 10 she'll probably give most things a go. I'd have to remind myself of the rules of a few of these but just Google them.

Also don't forget to show her some of the nice one-person games. Patience, Clock Patience and Napoleon for example.

Happy days and fond memories! How lovely! ?

Used to have hours of fun playing cards as a family when I was young. Instead of pennies for Newmarket you could use matches, raisins, smarties etc. I wish I could remember all the rules etc but I'm sure you could Google them.

Gin -rummy...double rummy...solo...poker ...these last two I had learnt well by the age of 7...but then my father was a croupier in a London club. Cribbage a good game for kids to start with . Yahtzee played with dice also good....I remember a family game called Newcastle also one called Scoop...might have that lady in wrong. You can buy a book of family card games for older kids that don’t have to include snap or happy families. Maybe leave poker till they are teenagers.

Just thought of few more...whist...canasta....cheat!

We went away with our 2 DGD (5 &9). No i-pads or computers taken. We took board games, some of theirs and some from our loft which belonged to their daddy and auntie. Of course, they were a great hit as they had never played them before. I was 'gamed out' by the end of it but lovely memories.

I LOVE both board and card games. We have just given maybe 40 games away as trying to thin them out! Have only kept about six packs of cards as if family want to play, say, Racing Demon - where you need a pack each - they can bring their own in future!

LullyDully Sun 11-Aug-19 16:43:35

So many games with a pack of cards.

Board games are worth investing, in. My lot love Cluedo, Risk, Game of Life and even the dreaded Monopoly. Not to mention with word game with a bomb. That is great fun and good for vocabulary.

Love cards, I believe Chase the ace and Newmarket are the same game.
S***head is another one that’s a fun family game although I thought my sons had changed the name to call it that ? I love ve whist never learn d bridge though.

Magrithea Sun 11-Aug-19 17:54:17

Racing Demon!! It's a tradition in my DH's family and I was introduced to it 40 years ago! You all have your own pack to play Patience (or Solitaire if you prefer!) but you can play cards to anyone's piles once the aces are out. Great fun but you need a quick eye and a large table!

Fennel Sun 11-Aug-19 18:12:17

We used to play many of those.
Another one is Memory. You spread the cards out on a table and each person turns up 2 cards. Until they have a number pair.
One of our daughters always won this.

SueDoku Sun 11-Aug-19 20:36:02

I've taught my DGD to play Strip Jack Naked - which I learned from my DGM - and she loves playing it smile

EllanVannin Sun 11-Aug-19 20:37:33

I used to love Memory.

agnurse Sun 11-Aug-19 23:50:43

When I was in Grade 1 we had a couple of special decks of cards for
Memory. (Pictures, not numbers.) I loved to play Memory with my classmates.

My child played Canasta at 10. We printed rules off so he could keep looking at them.
