Good morning, I have my first online delivery arriving tomorrow afternoon
Do I tip the delivery driver or not?. Belgium not the UK but delivery is delivery.
I live in a basement garden flat and they will bring everything downstairs for me.

No, I have never tipped delivery drivers. Mostly they just leave the parcels on the back step and clear off before I reach the door. They clearly don't expect a tip. At the moment, they have to stand well back, and, during this time of pandemic, it's against the - perhaps unspoken - rule for hard cash to change hands.

As for the logistics of paying, we put the note in an envelope and leave it at a social distance to be picked up

No, they move too fast to catch!

I tip the supermarket drivers. Minimum wage is not a lot. I was lucky in that when I was working I was paid well. I am in pension surplus as the virus restrictions have so limited my outings and therefore costs. I can thus afford to tip. I only have a monthly delivery of food so it is usually £3 to a five pound note dependent on what is in my purse. I tip the hairdresser by rounding up and paying in cash and not being too diligent in getting a receipt. She is a one man band. I round up in the taxi as well but do that on the debit card. The postman gets a bottle of something. I never see the bin men as they come at the crack of dawn. I quite like to tip as it makes people smile.

You’re lucky to get a delivery slot, I’ve given up trying!

glammanana Wed 21-Oct-20 11:35:23

I don't have takeaway deliveries but I would never tip the likes of Uber Eats etc their prices seem over the top to start with I do tip my delivery driver who brings my Supermarket delivery along with my Postman/Binmen at xmas always.

I always tip my grocery delivery person £3. It’s worth every penny for me not having to go grocery shopping.
I gave the guys who recently delivered a new bed £5 each, for a very awkward delivery done with professionalism and cheer.

I always tip, usually about £3, I appreciate anyone doing me a service for making life easier.

Never crossed my mind to tip my Sainsbury’s delivery driver.... they do get paid, don’t they!? The only people I’d tip would be paperboy if I ever had one...and used to tip milkman at Christmas.... just because my dad was a milko. Stopped tipping taxi drivers as well as I think £7 for going 1.5 miles is tip enough.

I have tried to tip Sainsburys drivers but they refuse.

Moggycuddler Wed 21-Oct-20 11:43:10

No. Not expected in the UK anyway. And particularly now with the virus, nobody really wants to be handling coins. Just thank them and be friendly!

Phloembundle Wed 21-Oct-20 11:52:38

No. Never thought about it.

Yertiz Wed 21-Oct-20 11:56:16

When I first started to get my groceries delivered I offered the driver a tip but he said they weren't allowed to take anything, so I've never offered again

kwest Wed 21-Oct-20 11:58:50

No, it encourages people to pay poor wages and elderly pensioners and cash-strapped other people to feel guilty if they cannot afford to tip.

Justwidowed Wed 21-Oct-20 12:00:34

I make mince pies for the binmen at Christmas, normally two each. They always seem pleased.

Riggie Wed 21-Oct-20 12:00:36

Not for online shopping. Regular deliveries (vegbox, milkman, paper) get a tip at xmas.

We use deliveroo - I used to have coins ready to tip, but they vanished so fast (even befkre lockdown) I add it to the payment

pennykins Wed 21-Oct-20 12:03:21

If they going beyond what they may be expected to do then I certainly would do even $2 would be acceptable. I always tip take away deliveries because they don't get paid very much

My husband used to be a delivery driver for a well known department store and would sometimes be given goods as a tip, ie fresh eggs, a couple of tins of beer, etc and often cash. He said it was interesting that those who seemed to be well off, were less likely to tip than those who were not. If the delivery had been difficult, eg heavy furniture to an upper floor, he would accept, and he would not accept from people who he thought had little to spare.

Petalpop Wed 21-Oct-20 12:26:51

No. Anyway any deliveries I have are left in the porch, the driver rings the bell and the van is gone before the dog even gets a chance to start barking..

Tanjamaltija Wed 21-Oct-20 12:29:39

Not only are they delivering, they are even going to bring your shopping downstairs. If it were your son, or your husband, lugging stuff for people, would you not like it if they were given a tip (and a glass of water)? Do as you would be done by. Even if they earn more than the minimum wage, you'd make their day. They saved you the journey, and the walking about the shop with your trolley.

Lulubelle500 Wed 21-Oct-20 12:36:07

Jillybird: I get three or four Amazon deliveries a week, sometimes more. If I added £5 to the cost of each item it would be ridiculous. I don't have groceries delivered - that might be different as they have to unload the stuff, but Amazon drivers just leave whatever it is on the mat and they're gone. I work in the room in the front of the house and can be seen from the road outside, so they often knock to give me neighbours' things. At Christmas I'm up and down like a Jack in the box but I don't mind as my neighbours are lovely!

Stella14 Wed 21-Oct-20 12:46:23

It has never occurred to me to do that. It’s certainly not a convention, not even in the USA where people are obsessed with tipping.

suziewoozie Wed 21-Oct-20 12:48:17

I only tip WR deliveries - not any of the parcel companies

Daddima Wed 21-Oct-20 12:54:44

I have always tipped. Pre-Covid the Sainsbury driver brought the shopping into the kitchen and unloaded it, and now he packs my bags on the doorstep.
