We all have garages round here but no one uses them apart from me. I must admit it’s easier to just go outside and go.
I find it useful when we have snow as I don’t have to dig myself out., apart from that a bit of a nuisance. What’s your view on it please.

Our garage is full of Domesday tinned provisions (Brexit, Pandemic etc) and tools, large freezer etc. We have a car port next to it which we take it in turns to use. Whoever isn’t using it parks in the front of the house.

I have a detached garage to side and rear of my little bungalow with a driveway past my front door (on the side of bungalow) but my car would have to breathe in to get past my kitchen drains which stick out into drive. What a stupid design!

tanith Wed 28-Oct-20 15:49:43

No I don’t think my car would fit easily I think cars were much smaller when this house was built so it’s used mostly for storage and second freezer. Luckily I can get 3/4 cars on the drive so no problem. I don’t think any of my neighbours use their garages for cars lol.

tanith Wed 28-Oct-20 15:50:46

That should be 3 or 4 cars not 3/4s lol

Our garage is an old coach house.
It houses a vintage car, drinks fridge, freezer, tumble dryer, garden furniture and most of East Yorkshire’s mouse population ?

SueDonim Wed 28-Oct-20 16:10:22

Oh, is that what garages are for? grin

I used to park mine in our garage but after we had a shipment arrive from abroad there has never been enough space in there. Also, the door now can’t be opened from outside due to a fault that’s never been mended so there’s not much point. I don’t think anyone in our street parks a car in their garage.

In our previous house we had an automatic door which meant you could go out and come home without getting wet - great!

Our garage also houses our vintage car, a pre-war MG, as well as my wife's VW Golf. A useful tip that I was given is to park the car, that's the MG, on carpet. The fabric draws any damp. So we have a couple of books of carpet samples retrieved from the skip and one sample sits under each tyre. The carpet samples are changed when they start to get damp. I keep a large cat litter type tray under the engine to keep the garage floor clean in case of leaks. And through the car's winter hibernation an oil filled radiator keeps the car from freezing overnight.

So, as my wife puts it. The car is snug in the garage, in her slippers, sitting over her commode and kept snug by her hot water bottle. The VW Golf benefits from all that molycoddling too.

My poor old Mercedes has to make do with keeping Trixie company under a canopy. Trixie is a Morris Minor Traveller with the letters TRX on the number plate.

I used to put my car in the garage but the garage is now full of all the rubbish from the house which has to go to the tip, charity shop and ebay!

Jaxjacky Wed 28-Oct-20 16:17:48

We don’t have a garage, drive can accommodate 2 to 3 cars, however the shed, cleared out during lockdown, is full again!

In our last house we had two built in garages, unusual house design.
They were both quite large, one stored DHs classic car and had the utility area at the back. In the other I put my car, it also a had storage area. Now we’ve downsized we have a detached garage, quite large and set back from the house. Has DH’s work bench, tools and storage.
I did read that car insurers prefer parking on drives, as there were a lot of claims from garage parking, such as scrapes, doors hitting the car and paint tins falling!

biba70 Wed 28-Oct-20 16:38:53

definitely in the garage, and never a scrape, etc. Took me a little while to get it right when I changed to a slightly larger car this year, but got it sussed to a tee now.

Watching my neighbours scrape the windscreens and clear all the snow every day- is quite an incentive. Mind you, we do get a lot of snow here - as Cilla used to day a 'lorrr o lorrr' of snow.

Our garage was built in the 1950s and our cars won’t fit into it.

kittylester Wed 28-Oct-20 16:40:15

Well, we sorted out and tidied our garage over lockdown - unfortunately we still cant fit a car in it!

TerriBull Wed 28-Oct-20 17:01:01

No chance our garage is a bit chocka, and as we can access it from the house it's where we have our washing machine, tumble drier and freezer.

When we moved into our last house my husband said, "I'm really going to make a point of parking the car in the garage" he did for a while, then a shelf with tins of paint collapsed and he found the bonnet of his car, which I think was a Mercedes back then, covered in dents and sploshes of paint.grin Well that was that! both our cars were on the drive after that!

Judy54 Wed 28-Oct-20 17:02:14

Yes definitely in the garage. My Partner cleared the junk out and put shelves up so that we do have some storage capacity. It now looks very neat and tidy. This is the first house in which we have had a garage so perhaps it is still a bit of a novelty for us. However the majority of people we know never put their cars in the garage and use them for storage or as workshops. Whatever suits your needs and works best for you is what is important.

Millie22 Wed 28-Oct-20 17:28:26

No garage so it's not something to decide on. We have two parking spaces and a front garden which is a rarity now as most people have tarmaced over their garden. I have a hedge and wildlife area.

TrendyNannie6 Wed 28-Oct-20 17:31:43

Nope our vehicles are kept on the drive,

craftyone Wed 28-Oct-20 17:34:47

I live on a small new development and every house, including the 3 bed houses, has a garage and drieway with space for 2 cars. The garages are all 3m x 6m

Franbern Wed 28-Oct-20 17:52:21

My block of flats has garages throughout the ground floor. One per flat, except for two flats which do not have one. We also have a small private car park to be used on short term by flat resident and workpeople doing work on the flats. It is actually a rule that we should keep our cars in our garages most of the time, only using the car park for very short stay.
When I return each week from the supermarket I do use the car park, and then later that day or the following day move the car to the garage. As the flats were built in the mid-1980's when cars were narrower, the garages are quite long (able to to have storage items, but not very wide, even for my small Hyundai i10 car - so reversing it out has to be done with care. But it is nice to keep the car under cover. At my last house, the garage at the rear of the garden was really only of use as a store room, so car was kept on house frontage. Made it very easy and convenient, but I am sure it is better being kept out of wind, rain and salt.

Kate1949 Wed 28-Oct-20 18:26:39

I haven't got a car or a garage smile

PamelaJ1 Wed 28-Oct-20 19:02:31

I used to , it even had automatic doors.
Now it’s a beauty salon.
I did used to put my car in but money talks and now the car gets cold.
I don’t have to go out in the ice and snow to get to work so I can live with that.

FlexibleFriend Wed 28-Oct-20 19:11:11

No because we converted the back end of the integral garage as a downstairs shower room. We built a wall and the front part of the garage is used for storage for tools etc and houses 2 freezers too. Far better use than parking a car in.

Urmstongran Wed 28-Oct-20 19:20:39

I read once that most people store stuff in their garages that cost less than the car they leave outside in all weather!

HurdyGurdy Wed 28-Oct-20 19:23:32

Our garage is now our son's bedroom, so I think he'd take a dim view of us parking a car in it grin

Treebee Wed 28-Oct-20 19:27:44

Yes our car goes in the garage. We have to fold the wing mirrors in to get it through the door though, and I’m rubbish at backing it out again. It keeps it warm and dry.
