I’m sorry you feel you look ridiculous and that you perambulate/shuffle in your jeans, Hetty. Just because you feel you can’t wear them doesn’t mean the rest of us look ridiculous. Maybe we’ve simply been blessed with better genes.

Back to choices. Prompted by this thread, I made a big order with Landsend. They arrived yesterday and they’re all going back today. One issue that others pointed out, of too tight waists, meant two styles didn’t fit properly. A third seemed to be an entire size smaller than the first two! I didn’t like the colour of the final pair. I ordered two t-shirts as well. They’re also going back, they’re so thin.

I’ll now check out M&S. I have one pair of ?Sierra/Sienna jeans which are nice.

I only buy jeans from M&S ans they are the only ones that fit on both hips and waist. I’m not suggesting they are the best quality you can buy.

Wow, according to Hetty58 I’ve got 6 more years of wearing jeans . Not going to happen . I live in jeans and have both expensive and supermarket jeans .
A well fitting jean can make your legs longer and slimmer, the pocket positioning can make your bum smaller and stretch can reduce a tum . It also depends what you wear them with. Shoes , boots , tops .
My DD is a buyer for a well known fashion store and and definitely lets me know if something doesn’t suit me .
Oh I also have long hair and shock horror wear a bikini on holiday .

So to get back to the question that the OP posed: one solution might be to book a personal shopper, somewhere like John Lewis, where you can try on many different brands and be guided by someone who can recommend a good fit. Would that work for you Tanith?

Just as beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so (potentially) is ridicule.
How unkind, ageist, intolerant and arrogant to suggest anybody looks ridiculous and should have themselves filmed to compound the insult.
With judgements such as these, no wonder many women lack confidence in their appearance or are conscious of their former self-confidence of their youth sapping away
We all get old, if we are lucky, so get over it and if we cannot make our own decisions about what we wear I maintain it is nobody else’s business!
I have often thought the reason so many elderly women wear beige and pastels is that they no longer have the confidence to stand out, to say “look at me”, preferring to sink into the invisibility of old age demoralised by remarks such as the one I have just quoted

I'm loving girlfriend jeans from tu at sainsbury. They do a huge range of different styles so if you have time and tolerance may be worth having a session of trying lots of different styles. I bought 3 more pairs of vinted after finding my fit 🙂

I don’t wear jeans I buy jeggings no zip and very easy to wear. My latest are from George at Asda in black navy and cream size 14 leg 29 inch perfect fit. Easy on and off easy wash no iron perfect.

So half the population should not wear jeans? Really?

Agreed, Calipso. I too wear (I admit, expensive) jeans every day and for going out, in lots of colours (shock, horror!). Unfortunately a lot of old ladies dress like old ladies because that’s what they think they should do - like getting their hair cut short at 40 and keeping it that way.

Well thanks for that Hetty. I’m not overweight and I don’t shuffle. I’m slim, walk properly and don’t dress as ‘mutton’. I expect next you’ll tell me I must get my long hair cut.
I have seen plenty of women of all ages who would be better advised not wear jeans - usually because they’re grossly overweight - but age is not the sole criterion.

Pretty rude even for you Hetty. I wear jeans for both everyday & smart occasions and I DO look good in them. Its all about good cut and not wearing them like a stereotypical old lady.

Fernhillnana - exactly - they do look wrong on oldies. I wear mine at home, gardening, dog walking etc. but wouldn't dream of actually going out anywhere special in them!

ParlourGames. Bonmarchė are still going online. I’ve just bought a pair of their jeans. They’re great!

I prefer jeans with no stretch. Stretch jeans always seem to ride down on me & I have to keep hoisting them up - belts help a bit but they still do it. Men's jeans use to be the best bet - but a lot of men's jeans seem to use stretch fabric now too.I blame my hips!

I had a great pair of jeans from M&S which eventually wore out. Could I buy the same ones again? You'd think it would be simple, wouldn't you? But no, they're all different now. After buying about three different pairs and taking them back, I finally found some that were okish, but not as good which I kept. Why do jeans slip off my waist? So annoying

NYDJ or Levis. Worth it. And jeans certainly don’t look wrong on someone over 70, but it’s what you wear with them and how you style yourself generally that makes the difference. I live in jeans. I’m very careful not to look either mutton or old lady.

Perhaps they’re jeggings which is a cross between the comfort of leggings (no zip/waist fastener) but the heavier weight of jeans and nice and stretchy! I live in my M&S jeggings; they are reasonably priced, so comfortable and come in so many different colours. Also have Next and New Look ones which are both heavier on the denim and much more like actual jeans. I like the way you get a smoother finish under clothes as there is no fly of course. They do tend to be of the ‘skinny’ leg variety, which I like, but with a looser top I think they look fine if you want to balance the proportions.

Levis do lots of different fits and lengths. They also shorten your jeans free of charge. They usually advise that you wear them first, wash them, and then take them back for alteration. I've done this for years and am never disappointed.

I’ve actually got rid of all my jeans …I saw a couple of ladies wearing jeans around the same age as me (70) and just thought they looked “wrong”. Wear needlecord in winter and linen in summer now. That’s it for me.
