The one song that still moves you

For me, the one song that can always bring a lump to my throat is Eva Cassidy singing SONGBIRD. The first time I heard it, I was entering somebody's dining room with a group of people just behind me. This song was playing softly in the background and I literally stopped in my tracks and gasped. (Of course, everyone else bumped into me from behind!) What song does the same for you?

'Myfanwy'. it was sung to me as a lullaby and I sang it to my daughters as a lullaby.

'She'. The last record my husband bought me

'12th of Never' for my beloved daughter on this her birthday

Amazing Grace still brings tears to my eyes. My parents loved it so it was played at their funerals which were only a few weeks apart.

What is it about sad songs that make them so EXTRA beautiful? I also love EVERYBODY HURTS and Springsteen's PHILADELPHIA. My daughters groan at me and say these are songs that bring on doom. I don't agree.

MissAdventure Sun 04-Feb-18 11:48:46

'Those were the days of our lives' by Queen.

giulia Sun 04-Feb-18 11:49:51

Everything I Do, by Bryan Adams. Intensely personal for me and still reduces me to tears.
When You Walk Through a Storm, from Carousel.
Many of Queen's songs.

Dedicated to the one I love - it was popular when DH and I first started seeing each other

Without you by Harry Nilsson - reminds of the heartache and pain I felt when DH died.

DanniRae Sun 04-Feb-18 13:11:58

Adele singing "Million Years Ago" - I can not get past the lyrics "I miss my mother............" without filling up. Just writing this is setting me off sad

Luckygirl Sun 04-Feb-18 13:15:44

If we're talking Eva Cassidy, then it has to be Fields of Gold.

But top of my weepy list is www.youtube.com/watch?v=d5R-s3laVSs

If you don't know Mindy Smith then check her out on google - amazing singer - Angel Doves is a gem.

Also Richard Strauss Four Last Songs - wonderful!

Anniebach Sun 04-Feb-18 13:22:51

Thank you Bathsheba x

Luckygirl, I have never heard of One Moment More, so beautiful

Charleygirl Sun 04-Feb-18 13:35:45

Can anybody remember who sang Amazing Grace?

tanith Sun 04-Feb-18 13:48:02

For me it's Jerusalem and Forever Autumn.

WilmaKnickersfit Sun 04-Feb-18 13:49:19

Everybody Hurts by REM and From A Distance by Nanci Griffith.

The first song helped me in dark times and touches me like no other. The video is powerful too.

WilmaKnickersfit Sun 04-Feb-18 13:50:33

I think it was Judy Collins Charleygirl.

Daddima Sun 04-Feb-18 13:55:05

Judy Collins, Charleygirl

For me it’s the Hallelujah Chorus, Lacrymosa from Mozart’s Requiem, and the last movement of Beethoven 9, mainly because of memories of happy times singing them.

Then songs sung by my parents, like The Holy City, O Mio Babbino Caro, & When I Leave the World Behind.

I also sang Fairytale of New York every year with a dear friend who died two years ago, and now can’t even listen to it, far less sing it!

Old Shep by Elvis ?

Bathsheba Sun 04-Feb-18 14:16:23

Like others, it's hard to choose 'the one song' because there are so many. Here are a few that can move me to tears

Family Portrait - Pink
Angel - Sarah McLachlan
In Those Days - Beverly Craven
There's a Light - Beth Nielsen Chapman

I Will Always Love You - I like the Whitney Houston version but really love the Dolly Parton version.

I must stop reading this thread as I keep being reminded of more. Without You is a huge favourite too And 'Sometimes When We Touch' by a singer whose name will come back to me as soon as I press post!!

kittylester Sun 04-Feb-18 14:17:48

Dan Hill - told you!!
