Online shopping

I think it may be time that I bite the bullet and do my shopping online.
It seems a fair few people do, and I'm wondering how easy (or hard!) it is, and who you shop with, please?

SpringyChicken Sat 11-Aug-18 18:54:12

Are you talking about groceries or any items, MissAdventure?

MissAdventure Sat 11-Aug-18 18:55:29

Oh, groceries, springychicken.
I'm really nervous about it for some reason!

SpanielNanny Sat 11-Aug-18 18:55:30

Are you talking about your food shopping? I use Asda. The first time I did find it a little overwhelming - finding what I needed etc (and some of the things that came up when I used the search bar were just bizarre). However it saves the things I ordered on a ‘favourites’ page, so now I tend to just scroll through that and select the things I want/need. It’s much quicker. I don’t think I’ll ever go back to doing a ‘big’ shop in an actual supermarket. Good luck!

MissAdventure Sat 11-Aug-18 18:57:07

Yes, I'm beginning to find shopping a real bind.
I can never buy everything I need because I can't carry it!

DoraMarr Sat 11-Aug-18 18:58:35

It’s TOO easy! I don’t really need all the dresses I’ve bought in the Toast sale this year, but they are hard to resist! You might want to check other customers’s reviews if you are buying clothes- they will tell you if the clothes come up large, for instance, or whether they wash well. It’s also a good idea to look at the returns policy of an online store: sometimes, but not always, returns are free, sometimes you have to pay the postage, sometimes you can return in store, and sometimes you can only return via a carrier, which may be a problem if you don’t live near a returns point. The big advantage is that you can buy different sizes ( provided returns are free) and try them on at home with different shoes, earrings etc.

SpanielNanny Sat 11-Aug-18 19:00:39

The not having to carry it is a huge advantage. I save quite a lot of money now when washing powder etc is on offer. I buy the large family packs that last me ages. There’s no way I’d be able to get them home myself!

humptydumpty Sat 11-Aug-18 19:00:51

Easy peasy, MissAdventure, I prefer Ocado myself.

kathsue Sat 11-Aug-18 19:01:29

I do a lot of internet shopping. My GS is 6'5" tall with size 15 feet so there is not much on the High Street to fit him. I try to use places that do free returns so I can order different sizes to try.

DoraMarr Sat 11-Aug-18 19:02:02

Oh, sorry, I didn’t realise you meant food!
I don’t do online food shopping now, just buy things almost daily, since I haven’t got a lot of space to store things. I remember one drawback was that it’s easy to over-order, and then you are left with a lot of stuff coming up to it’s use- by date. I think the other thing I found was that you should never do an online food shop when you are hungry. Or hungover.

SpanielNanny Sat 11-Aug-18 19:02:42

I’ve heard excellent things about Ocado humptydumpty Unfortunately they don’t deliver in my area.

janeainsworth Sat 11-Aug-18 19:03:10

Do you mean groceries or clothes or other stuff MissA?

I sometimes get an online delivery from Waitrose if I need a lot of things, say if the family are coming, but otherwise I like to go to the shop as it's only a mile away, I can get a free coffee and probably bump into someone I know.
The website is quite easy to negotiate, but you have to watch out how things are sold - for example it's not difficult to accidentally order 1 kilo of something, instead of a single item blush. You can book a time slot so you know when they're coming.
I get clothes from lots of different places - John Lewis, Uniqlo, Toast, Boden. The advantage is that you can try things on with stuff you already have to see if it works, but it's not quite the same as wandering round the shops actually looking at things.
If I know I want a particular item, like a storage box from Lakeland Plastics, shopping online saves all the faff of going into town and locating the item in the shop, so it's a clear winner.

Dora my daughter and I found that shopping at Aldis tended to make us overstock, with everything having a different sell by date.
It didn't work out quite as reasonable as we thought!

SpanielNanny Sat 11-Aug-18 19:06:27

Oh I can’t shop in Aldi. I get too excited by all the bargains and end up spending twice what I usually would, with piles of stuff I can’t fit in my cupboards!

MissAdventure Sat 11-Aug-18 19:07:18

I've seen Ocado vans around here.
Are they reasonably priced?

cornergran Sat 11-Aug-18 19:07:20

I’ve used Asda, Tesco, Sainsbury, Waitrose and most recently Morrison’s. I’ve found all the sites easy enough to use, if there’s a least favourite it would be Asda, seemed to take forever but others like it. Why not try your usual supermarket to begin with? Most have the option of a checking thingy to ensure they deliver to your area before you access the ordering process. Give it a go, I do one monthly big on line shop for heavy and regular items and top up weekly, seem to spend less and it’s so much easier.

Menopaws Sat 11-Aug-18 19:10:54

Ocado are very good, they have enough offers to make it fairly priced but the ease and service is excellent and you will wonder why you didn't do it sooner

MissAdventure Sat 11-Aug-18 19:11:49

I have worked in a place which had an Asda shop delivered, and it was quite problematic.
They would send 12 yoghurts which all went out of date the next day!

Dinnersready Sat 11-Aug-18 19:15:56

If you choose Ocado try this discount code for your first order... VOU9141070. You get a discount plus free delivery too. I love Ocado, great quality, good prices, and a lovely polite delivery man who is so helpful.

MissAdventure Sat 11-Aug-18 19:17:39

Oh thank you! smile

SpanielNanny Sat 11-Aug-18 19:18:04

That can be a problem MissAdventure But I’ve found in the past few months at least, that these items are highlighted at the top of your invoice and you’re given the option to send them back with driver. If you don’t, or if you don’t notice the short date it’s very easy to get a refund online, there’s actually an option for too short a date. Annoying that your food is out of date, but it is an improvement.

annodomini Sat 11-Aug-18 19:20:09

I've only used on-line food deliveries when I've been out of action, but with Waitrose almost my corner shop and Aldi conveniently close, there's not much point in on-line shopping. For everything else it's another matter. I'm on first name terms with the Hermes courier.

MissAdventure Sat 11-Aug-18 19:20:34

Yes, it was a pain in the workplace, because we had to check every item, since we were buying on behalf of the residents.
It would have been quicker to go to the shop!

MissAdventure Sat 11-Aug-18 19:23:22

Does anyone use Tesco?
My daughter did, and found them pretty good.

annodomini Sat 11-Aug-18 19:42:48

I did use them when I'd had a hip replacement and was very satisfied. Mind you, that was 13 years ago.
