I hate it, I hate it, I bloody hate it!

It is the spawn of the devil, devised by the most evil of goblins, just put on this earth to tease and torment!

Oh yes, it promises so much, " I will make your life easier" it says, "I will help you to avoid waste and keep things fresh" it says, "just put/wrap a bit of me over the plate/bowl/food item, and all will be well!" is says.

What it doesn't bloody say is "I will look quite innocent within my box, wrapped around my tube, until you actually want to use me. The first time you breach my cardboard chamber, I will be meek and docile, obedient to your demands. But beware, once you consign me again to the tomb of the kitchen drawer, I will be avenged!"

And it damn well is! Can you find its end? And if you do, does it actually come off the roll properly?

No of course it sodding doesnt, it's decided to do it's equivalent of the Dance of the Umpteen Veils, coming off bit by useless bit. You may decide to try (with environmental issues in mind) a sort of patchwork effort, using the damn small fiddly bits that came off when you were trying to get the amount you needed to cover the left over chopped onions/peppers/whatever, but don't bother, because by the time you have managed that, the items you were attempting to cover will either have shrivelled or flies will have landed on them!

BLOODY CLING FILM

And yes, I know that Lakeland and other retailers have absolutely wonderful dispensers, but right now, right this damn minute, there is only me and this particularly recalcitrant roll of the damn stuff, and I'm pretty pi**ed off!

Try keeping cling film roll in the fridge, it makes it easier to find the “end”

GardenerGran Tue 06-Aug-19 22:53:11

Phoenix you made me laugh! I’ve often said cling film is the work of the devil and my DH just can’t cope with the stuff. I’m a new granny who’s recently joined this site and it’s such a tonic. I will probably need guidance from you all in the months to come!

The foils you get here in Germany are so useless - they fit Phoenix's description. You are so lucky in the UK, you have the Bacofoil ones with the brilliant cutting mechanism, as mentioned in Moobox's Post of Mon 05-Aug-19 11:38:51 above.

I brought one with me last time I was over.

PS - this is not an advert!

I would like to change to the beeswax cloths, but I can't begin to imagine how you would use them. Aren't they stiff and how do you get them airtight?

Fennel Tue 06-Aug-19 16:58:31

ps I also fold over the torn edge before putting it away.

Fennel Tue 06-Aug-19 11:56:35

Good idea for a thread phoenix.
I think it depends how you tear the stuff. and what make it is.
The one I get from Tesco is easy to start. Then I pull out as much as I want, make a little nick at the top, Hold the roll in place with left hand a slowly tear down with the right. It ends up a straight tear.
Husband just rips it down and it ends up in a mess.
I've done that too.
I used to have the same problem with metal foil. In fact that was worse.

Keeping it in the fridge..who knew?

annsixty Tue 06-Aug-19 11:42:46

I can't believe this thread has reached 100 posts and I am mortified to admit to being responsible for 4 of them.
Its b.....y clingfilm, either use it or don't. ?

Nanny41 Tue 06-Aug-19 10:42:54

Please dont get me started on cling film.If anyone comes up with the perfect cling film solution, they should be given the Nobel Prize.

Persistentdonor Tue 06-Aug-19 08:30:55

Oh Pheonix, sad I am so sorry to be laughing fit to bust!

Thank you. flowers

This thread has encouraged me to chuck two of my five rolls out. They were from Netto! How long has Netto been gone?

The remaining three rolls, all opened and part used, are labelled that they contain 'no PVA'. Is that the same as BPA, mentioned upthread? Anyway, there are some good tips on here if I should use any of them again.

Thanks, everyone smile

I keep it in the fridge.

Never use the hideous stuff and wouldn't eat food that had been wrapped in it - especially moisture high content food

What did we do before clingfilm?

We used greaseproof paper and did a clever twisty tucking thing all around the top of the receptacle, as you do when steaming a pudding.

It was quite tight, if you did it correctly. And reusable.

SparklyGrandma Tue 06-Aug-19 04:12:38

I use foil instead of cling film. It’s easier to get off the roll!

Faye Tue 06-Aug-19 03:51:33

I don’t like cling film either, along with other disposable plastic products it’s ending up in oceans, rivers and washed up on the seashores of some unfortunate countries. In this day and age it’s time to use something else.

The other problem with cling film and cling wrap is they contain chemicals. If it’s not BPA it’s other chemicals. I am loathe to wrap sandwiches, especially for my GC in cling film.

I use baking paper to wrap sandwiches and decor glass casserole oven to table dishes with lids on them to keep food fresh. I use them in the oven, fridge and freezer. I usually buy them when they are on special.

rosemarigold Tue 06-Aug-19 03:25:50

When you buy a new roll of glad wrap just put it in the fridge just for an hour. It will glide out smoothly from then on! Then you can just keep the roll out of the fridge...it's like magic!

4allweknow Tue 06-Aug-19 00:03:07

So frustrating. Do you use the always tear cling film back on itself trick. If you haven't it's this. If you are right handed hold box in your left hand with the lid falling to the left and the film coming up flowing to the right from below the main roll acting almost like a weight. (That's once you have found the edge). Pull the film taut then cut on serrated edge of box. Leave the cling film with enough stuck on edge before closing. Works for me. Technically you are pulling the film over the back of the film but it is still in it's box. Never pull up over the top of the roll, as the film will crinkle and stick.

Evie64 Mon 05-Aug-19 23:27:35

Phoenix, loved your post and completely agree with every word. You might like to add rolls of selotape to the mix?

LuckyFour Mon 05-Aug-19 22:50:16

The cling film dispenser sold by Sainsburys is absolutely brilliant. I used to have all the problems with cling film described by Phoenix and others, but since using Sainsburys dispenser it all works like a dream. I use cling film numerous times a day - no problem.

etheltbags1 Mon 05-Aug-19 22:23:10

I hate it too but after this roll i wont buy any more. I can put a plate or a clean t towel over cooked food. I will not buy single use plastic

Coco51 Mon 05-Aug-19 22:18:30

Try Pro Idee stanless steel dispenser - it’s expensive, but there is a little thumb hole to trap the errant film while tearing and then all you have to do is pull an inch or so over the tearing teeth on the outside to stop it retreating. I’ve got three, so film, foil and parchment are safely stashed.

Grandmama Mon 05-Aug-19 21:10:24

Put the roll on a chopping board as wide as the roll.
Pull out the required length of clingfilm.
Run a knife (doesn't have to be sharp) along where the clingfilm leaves the roll.
Should have a flat piece of clingfilm on your worktop.

nana15 Mon 05-Aug-19 20:57:22

Leave a bit longer ,about 2 incheswhen you tear off and crunch it up you will be able to see it. or slow down as I have done and just do 2 things at a time and not 3,4 or 5!

Marthjolly1 Mon 05-Aug-19 19:17:53

I havent been on here for months. So glad I dipped in today, a very funny scenario.
I'm a user of clingfilm as well as silicone covers. Just fold the end of the clingfilm back on its self after tearing off. The next time you want to use it it will be easy to just pull away from the roll

EEJit Mon 05-Aug-19 18:18:13

My feelings exactly.
