What were you treated with as a poorly child at home?

When I wasn't well as a young child, many, many moons ago, my mother's first treatment for me was Langdale's Essence of Cinnamon in hot milk, followed by a bowl of bread and milk---crustless white bread, well buttered, cut in little cubes, boiling milk poured over it and liberally sprinkled with demerara sugar. I still like it today.

Two things stand out. One was a horrid medicine called 'Minadex' (a tonic, I think) and the other was arrowroot - I think it was mixed up in a paste and rammed down my throat regularly. I don't remember what the illness was, only that it was long and serious.

EllanVannin Thu 12-Mar-20 16:44:08

I forgot the treacle and sulphur powder for heat spots. Yuk.

I was rarely unwell but when I had my tonsils out I was given a bottle of lucozade which I thought was revolting.

Ellianne Thu 12-Mar-20 16:47:19

Another Heinz tomato soup here and spoonfuls of honey.

EllanVannin Thu 12-Mar-20 16:47:51

I remember Minadex, an iron tonic.

Wintergreen for chests. Castor oil when I once swallowed a button.

EllanVannin Thu 12-Mar-20 16:49:55

Mum used to " paint my throat " with an iodine-based substance if I had tonsillitis. I used to heave like mad grin

SalsaQueen Thu 12-Mar-20 16:50:16

Lucozade, when I was ill, was lovely. Golden Eye ointment for styes, and Lion ointment for other scrapes etc. TCP to gargle with (I love the smell and taste of it)

EllanVannin Thu 12-Mar-20 16:51:13

Medicine cabinet was like a chemist's shop.

Daddima Thu 12-Mar-20 16:52:39

I loved Minadex! I had many bouts of tonsillitis when I was wee, and my granny used to blow Flowers of Sulphur powder on to my throat from a tablespoon. It was foul.

shysal Thu 12-Mar-20 16:53:56

M&B emulsion, a walnut tonic and Virol. For chilblains a block of ointment called Snowfire, which terrified me as I thought it would burn me.

midnightschild Thu 12-Mar-20 16:54:04

Balls of butter and sugar for sore throats. Homemade ‘lemonade’ which was lemons steeped in boiling water with sugar. I loved both these ‘medicines’.

EllanVannin Thu 12-Mar-20 16:56:03

Yes, not forgetting the TCP.
No floral smells back then.
Jeyes fluid along the front path then the steps got done with a donkey stone.

Everytime I had a cough mum gave me Liqufruita with Garlic.

Milk of Magnesia for tum upset.

EllanVannin Thu 12-Mar-20 17:00:02

Dad used to have Carters Little Liver Pills and Algipan for aches and pains.
Mum with her Seidlitz powders for indigestion and always a tin of Andrews around.

grannypiper Thu 12-Mar-20 17:01:16

Milk of magnesia, cheesy scrambled eggs and a bed made up on the sofa, cured everything

EllanVannin Thu 12-Mar-20 17:02:36

I used to give the family Liquafruita for their coughs. Awful stuff, until I found Buttercup Syrup which was more palatable.

Sparklefizz Thu 12-Mar-20 17:31:53

Urrrgh! Yes, Minadex.
Golden Eye Ointment. Syrup of Figs. Liquafruita. Beechams Powders.

And a Wright's Coal Tar Burner burning away all night in my bedroom after I had had bad Whooping Cough. Still love the smell of coal tar, as in soap, but suspect the burner made my lungs worse, not better.

What was that thick caramel-tasting tonic stuff? I can't remember the name but anyway, I loved that.

Sparklefizz Thu 12-Mar-20 17:32:34

Oh, and Liquid Paraffin for constipation if the Syrup of Figs had not cleared me out.

Sparklefizz Thu 12-Mar-20 17:35:05

That was a hot cinder dropped into a cup of water , and disgusting . you said you were better the following day , even if you weren't .

No snowflakes in our generation, eh?

annodomini Thu 12-Mar-20 17:49:59

Syrup of figs, cascara, milk of magnesia. Camphorated oil for chesty colds as well as kaolin poultices if all else failed.

BBbevan Thu 12-Mar-20 17:56:26

Virol and Scott’s Emulsion .
Loved the first The other was white, lumpy fishy gloop. Yuk

sodapop Thu 12-Mar-20 17:59:06

I remember that everything taken orally tasted vile

Camphorated oil for a wheezy chest
Syrup of Figs for all that ails you
Snow fire cream for chilblains
Germolene cream for cuts and scrapes
TCP gargle for a sore throat
Grin and bear it for period pain

Callistemon Thu 12-Mar-20 18:08:39

Algilan! I can remember my dad using that; he used to get lumbago, which you don't hear of today.

Callistemon Thu 12-Mar-20 18:08:54

Algipan

Nortsat Thu 12-Mar-20 18:11:23

Camphor oil for wheezy chest and Vicks rubbed on to your chest at night
A vest and a liberty bodice in the winter
Germoline for all cuts or skin irritations
A haliborange tablet every day in the winter
Hot Ribena for colds
Lucozade if you were really poorly
Toast with Auntie Emily’s home made strawberry jam
When your appetite returned either (homemade) chicken soup or (my utter favourite) mashed potatoes and gravy ...
