How many places are there in a kitchen for a 10" bread knife to disappear into? It was in the knife block yesterday morning; I know this because I used it to slice the loaf for breakfast toast. This morning it had gone. I've searched the dishwasher, drawers, the bin, the bread bin. Nada. So.... who's got the bread knife?

Callistemon Thu 16-Jul-20 15:07:03

It's in the same place as my favourite potato peeler.

Sit down, have a brew and retrace your movements on the day in question.
Like Midsomer Murders!

Opercular as in lid? grin

We are still missing a GD's Christmas present from her aunty, put under the tree, seen under the tree, and never ever found when everyone opening their presents. I would blame the cats, except I know where they hide things......

SuzannahM I found two pairs of children's socks in the freezer once - new ones, thank goodness.

sharon103 Thu 16-Jul-20 15:14:35

It'll be in the same place as all those missing socks. grin

I always say we have a ghost in our house, Times I use something like scissors one minute and they're gone the next.

As I read a lot of crime fiction novels I would be very worried about a missing 10" bread knife.

Hope there isn't a loaf murderer on the loose.

They will be with the box of Christnas cards I bought one christmas and never saw again.

Have you looked in the dustbin. My son was given a beautiful silver spoon at his christening. Family heirloom. Rather than it sit in its velvet lined box, when he was two I let him use it for cereal /pudding. It went missing one day. I searched everywhere. No sign of it. DS was in the habit of putting things in the kitchen bin at the time. The day the spoon was lost happened to be bin collection day. I have always assumed the kitchen bin contained the spoon when decanted to the dustbin. Never told my in laws I had lost the family spoon. Happy hunting!!

You haven't inadvertently put it in the utensil jar or cutlery drawer have you, chewbacca?

Esspee Thu 16-Jul-20 17:55:06

I have a lovely collection of garden trowels, sorry, that should read HAD. This year four of them have disappeared. Hopefully they will reappear in the winter. ?

I swear that this house eats things! Lost count of the number of things that have gone missing, a professionally done plan for the garden, my bean slicer, a tube of Dermol wash that I only picked up from the surgery last week, the list goes on!

However the mystery of Mr P's missing odd socks has been solvedgrin

Stretching out in bed, my toes encountered "something" that shouldn't be there! shock

Quick furtle under the duvet and voila! A sock! This has happened twice.

Mr P doesn't take his socks off in bed, nor does he go to bed in them......

However, a certain young cat who shall remain nameless (Minnie, you know who you are) and who adores Mr P and gazes at him as if he is the most wonderful thing she has ever seen, has upped her game from stealing washing up sponges to socks! blush

I would love to catch her on film taking them from the floor beside the bed (yes, Mr P still manages to "miss" the laundry basket, thought of trying a star chart, but hey, what's the point?) and burrowing under the duvet with her treasure!grin

In the bin? I've lost items by putting them in the bin without realising. I lost a watch a couple of weeks ago - I took it off to wash some pots, and I think it must have somehow got thrown away when I cleared up.

Chewbacca Thu 16-Jul-20 18:37:22

OK, I've turned the wheelie bin upside down and gone through a weeks worth of recycling: not there. Checked the she'd and the greenhouse; not there. Freezer, fridge and dishwasher again, still not there. Even took the cushions off the chairs; nope. Every drawer in the kitchen; nope. If that bread knife is in this house, it's found damned good hiding place. This is just silly now. It was here yesterday; I'm beginning to think that someone stole my Robert Welch bread knife and they left the cheap ugly blunt one behind. angry

Lexisgranny Thu 16-Jul-20 18:44:24

Hands up those whose bins are upended at least once a week to search for a missing object,

dontmindstayinghome Thu 16-Jul-20 18:54:05

Have you looked at the loaf ? Your knife may be hiding 'in' it or 'under' it!
A few weeks ago we 'lost' my Mum's folding garden chair which we had used for a picnic. OH swore blind that he hadn't moved it.
We searched the house, the car, the shed, with no luck so eventually decided someone had stolen it from our porch.

It turned up yesterday hiding behind the ironing board in the garage! (that shows how often I do the ironing blush blush )!!
OH still says he never moved it (I know it wasn't me)!!

Nortsat Thu 16-Jul-20 18:54:06

It will turn up, as soon as you have bought an expensive new one to replace it...

We bought two new pairs of garden shears. An hour after we had begun to use them, our original shears materialised in the shed. Of course, the shed had been checked and they definitely weren’t in there.

diygran Thu 16-Jul-20 19:00:57

Suggest you buy new knife then lost one will be miraculously found.
I lost electronic car and garage keys which were kept in a small tin for safety. Lost them last summer and spent weeks turning house upside down for them.
Husband gave up and bought replacement car key recently. I was searching wardrobe again! opened a shoebox and there was the tin lurking in the back. I had posed it there 'for security'.

Chewbacca Thu 16-Jul-20 19:03:28

Have you looked at the loaf ? Your knife may be hiding 'in' it or 'under' it!

If it was in the loaf, then I've swallowed a 10" bread knife because the loaf has been eaten! grin

Ninarosa Thu 16-Jul-20 19:05:37

Oh well, now that you've said its Robert Welch, probably most of the street has been secretly coveting it.Is it in plain sight through a window when it sits in it's block ?

MellowYellow Thu 16-Jul-20 19:12:34

A kitchen knife is missing from my shed. The cat ran away with the spoon, sort of...?? (Once I found £11 in one of my wellies. No idea where it came from.)

Grammaretto Thu 16-Jul-20 19:41:56

If it were my bread knife I would suspect DH since I found my dressmaking scissors in the greenhouse.....

Our breadknife frequently disappears and turns up usually wedged tightly beside the cutlery tray. It has a very particular handle which was burned(melted) many years ago so it is quite easy to locate.

kittylester Thu 16-Jul-20 19:47:31

I know where it will be!! We have a granite wall at the front with thin granite stone sticking up along the top. I have found TWO pairs secateurs there and a trowel.

sharon103 Thu 16-Jul-20 20:27:26

I know this sounds daft but have you checked the knife block again. Is it the bread knife that's missing or another one?
Have a look.
Did you put a tea towel in the wash basket and the knife went in with it?
Try and remember what you did and where you went after you cut the bread.

Doodle Thu 16-Jul-20 20:28:40

kitty please will you look on your granite wall for my ice cream scoop. ?

kittylester Thu 16-Jul-20 20:44:12

It's probably there along with all the other things we've lost like the small melamine tray that is just right for 2 mugs of tea!

Chewbacca Thu 16-Jul-20 22:43:06

Found it! smileblush It was in the washing machine! The only thing I can think of is that I must have gathered it up with a couple of tea towels and shoved it in the washing machine, which was already half full of laundry waiting to be done. I've no recollection of doing that which is even more worrying and I can't understand why I didn't feel it through the tea towels or stab myself in the hand in the process.

But Robert Welch is safely back in slot 2 where he belongs and I feel like a right plonker. Is this how "getting on a bit" starts?
