We're giving away a limited edition scarf designed by Emma Greenhill, and a signed copy of Les Parisiennes in hardback.

What did it feel like to be a woman living in Paris from 1939 to 1949? These were years of fear, power, aggression, courage, deprivation and secrets until - finally - renewal and retribution. Even at the darkest moments of Occupation, glamour was ever present. French women wore lipstick. Why?

In enthralling detail Sebba explores the aftershock of the Second World War and the choices demanded. How did the women who survived to see the Liberation of Paris come to terms with their actions and those of others? Although politics lies at its heart, Les Parisiennes is the first in-depth account of the everyday lives of women and young girls in this most feminine of cities.

Read author Anne Sebba's article about Parisian fashion, and tell us which was your favourite decade for fashion for a chance to win a limited edition scarf designed by Emma Greenhill, and a signed copy of Les Parisiennes in hardback.

This competition closes on 29 August at midday. Les Parisiennes: How the women of Paris lived, loved and died in the 1940’s by Anne Sebba is published by Weidenfeld & Nicolson and is available to purchase on Amazon and all good booksellers.

1960s. Mini skirts and boots. And it was ok for the young to wear purple.

Has to be the 60s where anything went , what a great time to be around

I was going to say the 60's when Twiggy made being flat chested and skinny so fashionable as that was me! Tall, skinny and flat chested! But I was an insecure teenager then, all self conscious angst.

No, for me the best time was the 70's, when I was a confident 20 something floating around in Laura Ashley maxi dresses with sometimes a big floppy hat, or wide bottomed trousers and cheesecloth tops. The time when underwear became more comfortable and I stopped wearing stockings and suspenders belts (except on special occasions!)

The 1960's - had an aunt who did sewing for shop in Carnaby Street - some went missing !!

I love the fashion of the forties especially the NEW LOOK Dior created in the late forties after the austerity of the war. Soooo glamorous.

I love fashion, and all eras have something outstanding to look back on fondly. I think British street fashion in particular is fabulous - our young generation always seems to be at the forefront of originality, not bound by rules and convention and not scared to put their own stamp on vintage and modern style.

For me personally it was the mid 60s, when you could transform from frumpy schoolgirl to your village's answer to Twiggy just by chopping your hair, lopping 15 inches off an old denim skirt of your sister's, and getting very busy with the black eyeliner and white lipstick. Heady days.

It has to be the sixties for me, can remember buying my pointed bra and patterned stockings from Greys. Flower power, shift dresses loved everything about the sixties.

My favourite decade was the 1970s as that was when I was young and carefree - even if I did tend to watch how I walked not to fall off my platform shoes. Had some great clothes.

It's got to be the sixties!

As other have mentioned, the huge petticoats of the late fifties come to mind but nobody has mentioned the hooped petticoats. You had to be careful bending over or you exposed your pants to everyone!

I made most of my own clothes. Maths came in useful when making a circular skirt. I remember placing a large piece of material n the floor, working out the radius of the circle (the diameter being my waist measurement) and then measuring all round to get an even length.

Has to be the 50's. The men and women always looked smart. It's an era I would have loved to have been in .

Tegan Sat 30-Jul-16 17:10:01

I, too love it now. No set rules, anyone of any age can wear anything in any colour and any length. What's not to like smile.

I loved the 70's with maxi skirts and flares

hdh74 Sat 30-Jul-16 17:48:20

Although I wasn't around then I love the style of the forties. It always seems so elegant to me.

I love the Fifties style - so feminine, although I quite like the present-day attitudes towards fashion in that you can wear what you like. Looking back, my least favourite fashion decade was the Seventies - why did we wear so much brown and orange? As for the Parisiennes, I spent a lot of my teenage years in France and have always admired the French woman's flair for lifting an outfit with a well-chosen accessory.

The Seventies! Cheesecloth, hippy long skirts, loon pants .. Happy Days!

janeyf Sat 30-Jul-16 18:46:20

The Sixties - unique style, daring and modern

valbuk Sat 30-Jul-16 18:55:03

For me it was the 60's - such a brave new look to fashion; shocking grown-ups with the 'mini', the black and white designs, Mary Quant, the hippies, the emphasis on youth - wonderful to have been part of it.

pennwood Sat 30-Jul-16 19:43:46

I loved the sixties when anything went, bright colours, mini skirts, hot pants & big hair do's.

Lunchtimelady1 Sat 30-Jul-16 19:44:25

Definitely the 70's. Maybe just the age I was but everything was so much more accessible and easy to wear

Funkyferret Sat 30-Jul-16 19:45:21

The 60s. The clothes were wearable and fun, the hair and makeup over the top and I loved the shoes. It wasn't really a decade for towering heels which I've never got on with!

nettymay Sat 30-Jul-16 19:56:51

I loved the 50's Rock and Roll and coffee bars. Also met my husband in his winkle pickers!

flossy1973 Sat 30-Jul-16 19:59:45

I loved the 70s flares and big collars! Men wearing makeup with glam rock! I loved it!

Cailin7 Sat 30-Jul-16 20:43:02

Glamour of the 50s

russams Sat 30-Jul-16 20:45:32

Love the 50's fashion, from the rockabilly dresses to the wiggle dress.....so wish I could have been there.
