What are your stories and anecdotes about the current shortage on some shelves?

Casdon Mon 09-Aug-21 22:43:17

This is why there aren’t shortages in Waitrose MawBe. They know how to look after their staff.

Supply problems are down to HGV driver shortages, not a lack of food availability as I understand it, so it does depend which supermarket you use and where you live.

Meryl I am so sorry, how will you manage at your next dinner party?
Order in large quantities whenever you can ( top tip!)

Tbh Meryl I could only find one brand of pesto in my tiny local Co-op ! ?

Your Coop is well posh, Lemongrove, selling any type of pesto at all! grin

lemongrove Mon 09-Aug-21 22:48:17

Yes Sue....isn’t it?

MawBe Mon 09-Aug-21 22:48:24

Here it’s been cereals, with no Shreddies for the last two weeks for example
You mean you don’t knit your own, Casdon?
Can’t stand a shop Shreddie myself grin .

SueSocks Mon 09-Aug-21 22:51:39

Not so far in East Sussex. Shelves not as full as usual but have managed to get most of what we need.

Casdon Mon 09-Aug-21 22:53:25

Definitely not MawBe, I can’t knit to save my life - and it’s not me that eats Shreddies either, it’s my son. The gin I will admit to, but a lack of tonic has kept me on the straight and narrow, so the shortages must be a blessing in disguise.

lemongrove Mon 09-Aug-21 22:56:34

Mawbe you are a Shreddie snob! I have no time to knit my own so am forced to buy them ready made.
If they are not available I go for Weetabix or bran flakes ( I used to crochet bran flakes for Kellogg's, it was a well paid job tha knaws.)

None here that we noticed last Friday.

Choking on my evening bowl of gluten free cornflakes here!!

This reminds me of the supposed ‘overheard in Waitrose’ sayings……’My god, I don’t believe this - there’s no samphire!’

Wot, no tonic? It was due a problem with CO2 production due to Covid restrictions; is there still a problem?
shock

Have you got a problem where you are, Kali2?
Have people been panic buying again?

SueDonim Mon 09-Aug-21 23:16:10

Katek, my friend accidentally started a Waitrose rumour in my little town! (We are 120 miles from a Waitrose.)

We all heard a new grocery store was going to open but when all was revealed it turned out to be a new Coop. My friend was in a cafe chatting about it and said to her companion ‘Shame it’s not a Waitrose.’ She then heard a woman at the next table say to her friend ‘Did you hear that? They’re going to open a Waitrose!’ ???

Callistemon Mon 09-Aug-21 23:19:30

So glad I didn't mention it was Waitrose we went to last Friday.
It was the first visit to an actual store in 19 months!!

I did moan about the avocados - hope no-one heard me.

Deedaa Mon 09-Aug-21 23:19:51

Casdon DH drove a lorry for Waitrose and always said only the highest level management were paid more than the drivers.

Apart from the ongoing cat food problems we don't have any empty shelves, but certainly have gaps.

Guilty as charged m’lud grin

(There was no Toblerone though, last time I looked.)

Callistemon Mon 09-Aug-21 23:22:47

Tesco drivers used to be paid well years ago but I don't know about now.

Our neighbour left a managerial job with another firm to go back to driving a Tesco lorry - less stress, more money and he enjoyed it.

maddyone Mon 09-Aug-21 23:28:06

Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, and M+S all fine here, no shortages. However I popped Savers last week for a couple of things, and there were a few shortages there, toilet paper, wipes, and a few other things. The assistant said they were having a delivery the next morning and were expecting the shortage items to be re stocked.

Shinamae Mon 09-Aug-21 23:37:28

No kitten biscuits in Tesco at all!! And some other gaps in the shelves. I do only shop at Tesco because I don’t drive and it’s a five minute walk for me

Our local huge Asda has not had furniture polish for the last couple of trips, as in, none whatsoever. Also, limited selection of squashes, the drinking kind.

welbeck Mon 09-Aug-21 23:52:13

last few months, no bottled water at tills at lidl.
also today no filtered milk; so got the longest date available, large blue top, 20th; hope it lasts, my fridge is a bit wobbly.
also no little pots of fruit cocktail for last month.

We had a family party last weekend and there was no coke anywhere.

Well, I’m glad to hear your guests weren’t partaking of such substances, kitty

Don’t know haven’t shopped in a supermarket for two weeks, but local butchers, bakers and Spar fully stocked.

ElaineI Tue 10-Aug-21 07:00:08

Midlothian - lots of shortages in all supermarkets I've been to. Same things short off. Started with pet food.
