How to clean a tv screen?

I've just noticed some grot on the tv screen (shouldn't have put my glasses on!)
I'm ashamed to say I've never really cleaned the screen before, so I'm not sure how to do it. I remember grandson getting into trouble for cleaning too heavily and blurring a tiny piece of the picture due to damaging the screen.

I don't know about a tv screen, but I use specs cleaner wipes on my iPad and laptop. Seems to work ok and gets off GC finger marks. Whatever you use, don't rub too hard!

Umm.. even more ashamed to say I never clean my glasses either. Just had a thought though; maybe its my glasses with the grot on, rather than the tv?

DH does it with a low static microfiber cloth every week at least. It does need cleaning often like the laptop screen - they get very dusty and you cant see the picture properly.

I have a pot of screen wipes that are for monitors, TV etc. which I bought in Aldi's.
Just a light swish over does the job, definitly no pressing or rubbing.

You can buy special wipes for cleaning electronic equipment but I have found they do leave smears so any suggestions from other GNs would be gratefully received.

I think the wipes sound the safest option, rather than one of my home made ideas.

I got a packet of screen wipes from Tesco for a pound. Actually I thought they were widow cleaning wipes - but I didn't have my (smeary) glasses on grin

They attract a lot of dust because of the static. I use a micro fibre cloth too, but I have used all purpose polish on ours and it hasn’t done it any harm.

I got a spray in Asda's clearance shelf. It has been great, as our TV was covered in DGD sticky finger prints.

Marydoll Thu 14-Dec-17 09:55:24

I meant to say, I spray it on a cloth, not the TV!

Mapleleaf Thu 14-Dec-17 10:42:16

We were given a small micro fibre cloth with the tv, so I use that.

White vinegar mixed with water, apply (sparingly), wipe off with a micro fibre cloth. (Were you watching this morning when I did ours?).

Fairy liquid in warm water with a splash of vinegar, on a microfibre cloth, also for computer screens, iPad and mirrors.Leaves them sparkly.

You shouldn't use any soaps etc on an LCD screen it will damage it. A dry microfibres cloth for dust and slightly dampen for marks but very gentle if you press hard it will damage the screen

lemongrove Thu 14-Dec-17 13:09:43

Just a tiny bit of Fairy in the warm water, have been doing this for years, and hasn’t damaged it yet, but yes, doing it gently, no pressing on the screens.

annodomini Thu 14-Dec-17 13:15:26

If you dust it regularly with a light touch, it shouldn't need any more cleaning.

MissAdventure Thu 14-Dec-17 13:18:38

Thank you. I'm a bit worried about the gentle touch now.

lemongrove Thu 14-Dec-17 14:44:30

anno you obviously don’t have small DGC continually patting the tv with their grubby/ choccy fingers, believe me, our tv needs more than a light dust.tchgrin

This is very good and doesn’t leave any smears either

Minerva Fri 15-Dec-17 10:04:19

So do most of our low down windows, his mummy’s phone, my iPad, all the TVs etc. Etc. You would think my grandson had 20 greasy fingers!

tchgrin

Apple “genius” told me to stop using Screen cleaner on iPad because it gradually damages the surface. Just use plain water and a microfibre cloth. I assume TVs are the same. Our tv only needs a dust because our only grandchild is 7 and wouldn’t ever touch the screen.

pollyperkins Fri 15-Dec-17 10:08:42

Blimey! Sounds as if I've been doing it all wrong. I spray all screens and other glass like mirrors and windows with windolene spray and give it a quick wipe. Been doing it regularly for years with no ill effects.
