Toilet seat covers - are they a thing of the past?

I have a small shower room with basin & toilet. When I have had my shower I need to sit down to dry my feet, so the obvious place is the closed toilet, but I’m finding it really difficult to buy a towelling cover as I’ve had in the past. My usual go to stores John Lewis or Dunelm, no longer seem to stock them, Amazon have a few three piece sets, but they don’t look very good quality, they are all highly patterned and I only want the toilet cover, not a whole set. What do other people do?

I think that toilet seat covers, bathroom carpet and toilet roll modesty covers must have ceased to be at least 40 years ago. Things have changed so much since then regarding hygiene, how could you ever keep a bathroom clean with those things in it ?

I stand on the washable mat I put on the floor outside the shower and dry my feet by lifting my legs, in turn, to rest on the toilet seat, then wipe it afterwards. Looks like I’m the only one doing this!

Bit confused by all the mentions of 'unhygienic ' here. Aren't we all scrupulously clean everywhere having just come out of the shower?

My son when a small child [ he is now 35] used to refer to a lady we sometimes visited as xxxx with the fluffy toilet, meaning she had a toilet seat cover, so they were a rarity all those years ago, still available as matching pedestal and bath mats but on their way out
I do sort of miss pedestal mats for times when I'm barefoot and the floor is cold, mainly in the middle of the night, but now there is no one to pee anywhere other than the loo maybe I could reconsider getting one,or just have a bathmat handy to pop down

I have got nice absorbent bathmats. I shove my feet into crocs and don't dry my feet at all!

Missiseff Mon 05-Jul-21 11:23:35

Didn't they go out with the Ark?
Just wrap yourself in a large towel & sit down in that?

Witzend Mon 05-Jul-21 11:33:41

I haven’t seen such things for ages, nor pedestal mats. Not that I’ve actually looked but I dare say they’re still available.

After he developed dementia, my FiL kept angrily insisting that neighbours had stolen his manky old pedestal mat - as if! By that stage his aim was, ahem, very poor.

In reality a sister in law had taken it away and burnt it!

TrendyNannie6 Mon 05-Jul-21 11:44:49

Nope, wouldn’t have one, ditched them years and years ago, the same as a pedestal mat, not for me I’m afraid,

Dianehillbilly1957 Mon 05-Jul-21 11:47:36

No wonder you can't find them, not very hygienic!
A towel is a far better option I'm sure.

Alioop Mon 05-Jul-21 11:50:57

I'd use a hand towel as I couldn't cope with a loo seat cover. No wonder they are hard to find grin

I dry my bum after a shower then sit on the toilet lid to dry my feet. Where's the problem? I'm in my own shower shared with one other person not in public bathhouse.

A definite no-no from me ! As others have said use a towel.

Get a pair of flip flops, put on bathrobe and walk to bedroom. Feet will be dry in no time.

I never liked toilet seat covers or the covers that went on the lid, which from the context I gather you mean.

It surprises me that a modern toilet lid is strong enough to sit on, but if yours is and you want a cover, draw round the open lid on a piece of newspaper, then use the paper as a pattern, adding an inch or inch and a half all the way round .

A piece of towel in a colour of your choice only needs to be hemmed and fitted with elastic to make a cover.

Personally, I would prefer a folding plastic chair to sit on while drying myself or washing my feet.

I've never had one and my mother didnt have one either. I can't sit on the loo to dry my feet as its not in the same room as the bath!!
I do put a towelling bathmat on the floor before I bathe or shower so the soles of my feet dry enough on that that I can potter through to the bedroom to finish drying and dressing.

fluttERBY123 Mon 05-Jul-21 12:58:50

I have never sat down to dry my feet, I stand and put each foot up on the side of the bath. I do sit down to.put foot cream on and it's most uncomfortable.

Nasty unhygienic things.

Joesoap Mon 05-Jul-21 13:06:23

I havent had a toilet seat cover for years neither a pedestal mat, they were really very unhygienic.I just have a little mat in front of the hand basin.
A towel on the toilet seat seems a good idea and into the wash after.

Joesoap Mon 05-Jul-21 13:13:56

I cant understand why so many dont dry ther feet, its so important to dry between your toes.I have had a hip replacement and cannot dry one foot I am not allowed to bend down that far yet,I hate not beig able to dry between my toes, I manage as best I can.

Gabrielle56 Mon 05-Jul-21 13:17:26

Any fabric in bathrooms/loos like seat covers pedestal mats or carpets, definite no-no!! Unhygienic and naff. Use a small guest towel . You can get them online and 2/3 of them will keep your bathroom fresh. It's a shame we don't have bathrooms bifnenough for a cork lidded stool or something! It's a pain having to sit but it comes to us all!....

Cuckooz Mon 05-Jul-21 13:25:29

Gosh, I don’t dry my feet ? Dry everywhere else but never between the toes. Have never done it.

Harmonypuss Mon 05-Jul-21 13:28:35

@Sarnia

I am not surprised toilet seat covers are a thing of the past. They are ok if you live on your own and don't have visitors but otherwise they are totally unhygienic.

I do live alone and have bought these on ebay for a couple of pounds, far better than a cold bum at 3am in the winter!

I do hasten to add that if there is anyone visiting I do remove the seat cover before they arrive.

Unhygienic and rather naff! Just use a towel which can be washed more easily. The comments about those ghastly toilet roll holders; my friend's Mother had one, it was a plastic doll with a crocheted crinoline and even after all these years I can remember the words of the little piece of paper pinned to her 'frock' Out of paper, don't despair. Turn me over and I'm a spare. Shudder

Oh, thank you for this! I have laughed 'til I cried over the comment on the doll's frock. Shudder indeed! grin

Hetty58 Mon 05-Jul-21 13:58:14

Am I the only one who just stamps on a towel - then toddles off into the bedroom to dry my feet properly with the hairdryer? It works for me!

LyWa Mon 05-Jul-21 13:59:50

Thank you all for your messages. I feel slightly under attack on hygiene issues and do feel the need to add that………
a) my toilet seat is very strong and is fine to sit on, b) I have been using a towelling seat cover that goes in the wash with my bath towel and bath mat twice a week, c) I am the only one that uses this shower room and d) maybe I am more particular about cleanliness than some, but when I come out of the shower I can honestly say that sitting down would not cause a hygiene problem.
