Memory foam mattress

Does anyone have a memory foam mattress on their bed? I don't mean a mattress topper, but the actual mattress itself. Being a lady of a certain ae lol I have loads of night time flushes and am beginning to think that my memory foam mattress isn't helping, as most of the heat seems to be coming from underneath me rather than on top, if you know what I mean. I only have a 4.5 tog duvet cover yet am awake most of the night as I'm far too warm. I don't want to go to the expense of buying a new mattress if it's not going to make any difference.

Six months ago I got rid of my memory foam mattress, got a conventional one and now have a Dreams topper on it absolutely fine....

We changed from memory foam to a ‘normal’ mattress last year and I definitely don’t get so warm in bed as I used to. When we were looking for a new mattress we were told that some newer memory foam mattresses are constructed to avoid overheating so I guess it is a problem for some people.

I have had a Tempur mattress for a number of years. I did read that some people found they were too warm, but never had any problems myself. I love it especially for my aching bones.
Trouble is when I go away on holiday other beds seem uncomfortable.

We have a memory foam mattress, but found it was too hard, and had to put a memory foam topper on as well. I don't find it too hot, we have a pure silk duvet which is light and supposed to adjust to temperatures. We rarely need to use anything on top of it.

Before going to the expense of changing your mattress, have you tried using a cooling mat, I bought two which are designed for dogs in the summer to lie on, and I keep one on the bed and the other on the floor, and swap them over if they get too warm to cool me down. Most effective for me if I cool my head down, for some reason so I use them like a pillow.

We’ve just last night got a new Emma mattress. Our previous one was memory foam but was very hot and over time slumped. This one is also memory foam but seems much nicer. Definitely cooler. Must admit I prefer a sprung mattress but this one is nice. But firm tho.

Also re cooling. Best thing I’ve bought is a silk pillow case. Wasn’t too expensive as it’s cotton in one side which stops it slipping. It’s made a huge difference to me. Not more hot head!!

When i went to buy a memory foam mattress the salesman told me that they made you too hot and suggested the silentnight 7 zone mattress instead. It is pure utter bliss and 7 years later is still as comfortable as the day i bought it.

We had a memory foam mattress quite a few years ago (not an expensive one) which was good for a few years but started sagging. We then changed to a Silentnight "zonal" sprung mattress about 4 years ago but it was like a trampoline. Everytime one of us moved in the night it woke the other one. I am now at the night sweat stage and we have bought a Nectar memory foam mattress. It states it has a top layer which draws the heat away. We have only been using it for a few days and the night sweats are no worse than the sprung mattress (although the weather at the moment is helping). It is also better for us as no trampolining at night.

Notanaturalblonde your mentioning of trampolining reminds me of my 3yo GD. She once asked me if she could bounce on my bed. I said no, she couldn’t, because those are the rules in my house.

She thought about it, then asked ‘Can you bounce on your bed then, Nanna?’ grin

Dd and SiL used to have one, bought very cheaply from someone who hadn’t had it long and couldn’t get on with it.

Dd and SiL didn’t have it long, either - found it much too hot.

We have an electric blanket, I don't think that you're meant to use them on memory foam mattresses?

kittylester Wed 07-Apr-21 16:53:18

Like the other kitty, we have had a Tempur for years. Love it.

We bought an expensive Tempur memory foam mattress about 4 years ago. Were assured by salesperson it wouldn’t be hot it and it seemed so comfy in the showroom.

We slept on it for 3 months and found it both hot and uncomfortable, and it ended up in the spare room. We now have a JL sprung mattress with a natural filling, which is great. I guess beds are a very personal choice.

I've had a Tempur mattress for 10 years now. Expensive but brilliant.

My son and DIL had a memory foam mattress and found it made them very hot and disturbed their sleep. They’ve swapped for a pure latex mattress and are much more happy.

I'm sleeping on my daughter's OTTY memory foam mattress at the moment, it has a cool gel top (no electric blankets can be used on it). Not sure what I think of it, I find it very comfortable, but wake up almost burning with warmth.

We have latex mattresses and find them very comfortable. Got "Waterlattex" ones which come rolled up and expand to shape once you open them. Second time we have had these and prefer them to any other type.

Really dislike memory foam
Mattresses. Far too hot. I have a normal sprung one which is fine.

It’s strange, isn’t it, how we have different preferences? We bought a memory foam mattress for the spare room when DS and DDIL lived here for a few months and they said it was so comfortable. Weeks later I had to escape there for a night when we had a bee in the bedroom and I hardly slept, it was so hard and I was so warm. DH, on the other hand, liked it so much he threatened to decamp permanently from our usual sprung mattress. smile

When I can afford to upgrade my mattress I shall buy a Dormeo Octaspring. I have their pillow and a topper at the moment and although I am a hot body they don't make me too warm. Good luck with your search.

Hot sweaty nasty things, wouldn’t dream of having one after having experienced them when away from home.

Georgesgran Thu 08-Apr-21 23:47:20

shysal - I’ve just taken delivery of ‘your wishlist’ mattress today. Still in the box until DD1 can help me get it upstairs. I bought it online - half price and opted to pay in 3 installments-interest free.

I love my memory foam mattress- my bed is still warm after a trip to the loo during the night. I also use a 15 tog duvet so it is a good job we are all different. I also take a hot water bottle to bed because I'm very cold in bed until I warm up.
