Looking ahead - Friday morning probably ....

I shall wake up with that all too familiar lump of lead feeling in my stomach that followed Brexit and Trump. I will not have slept well but will not be hungover as champagne doesn't do that to me. I'll be at my DD's so the dgc will enliven breakfast. Then it will be a slow coming to terms with reality over the weekend as all sides spin away furiously - some with less to spin than others. I will be sad but not surprised. I will be sad about the future of education and the NHS in particular and sad for people without the cushions and choices that others have. I will be pessimistic about the Brexit negotiations and the fact that there is no hope of our becoming a kinder, more caring society. I will only watch C4 news and avoid BBC radio 4. I may just listen to R3 all weekend. I will probably avoid GN but join the bunfight on MN as it is less draining. <sighs>

No wonder you don't enjoy the political threads Kitty, always seems to be someone waiting to go for one's throat after even the most innocuous comment.
Hope Maisie settles in well, pics please!

Let's hope that whoever wins does not have a large majority and so will have to tread more carefully. Opposition needs to have some power! We have a rocky road ahead whoever wins!

Do you really think much will change? Especially in the short term?

The world will not stop spinning, the weather will be whatever it is, a pint of milk will cost whatever it does, Jersey Royals will still not be like they used to, and Diane Abbot will still be stood down because she is a loose cannon "unwell"

daphnedill Wed 07-Jun-17 19:45:55

No, the world won't stop spinning, but we will have a very divided country on so many levels. It's not a prospect I relish.

daphnedill Wed 07-Jun-17 19:46:27

Yes, I do think a lot will change. It already has.

Rigby46 Wed 07-Jun-17 23:28:57

Why are people talking about potatoes?

kittylester Thu 08-Jun-17 06:50:03

phoenix is just being philosophical about the situation, I imagine! Try it.

ninny Thu 08-Jun-17 07:02:35

I hope Theresa May gets a landslide and the SNPs lose their majority.

Jane10 Thu 08-Jun-17 07:20:38

We can but hope ninny but I don't somehow think it'll be as clear cut as that unfortunately.

GracesGranMK2 Thu 08-Jun-17 07:34:16

I shall go and look at MN now as I am sure we are already getting a glimpse of what GN will be like. I am not a member but if it makes better reading than here that is what I shall do. Good OP Rigby.

I echo many of the issues raised. Until the Election votes are counted and we have the result no more can be said. Not just who won each seat (FPTP) but the overall count across the whole country. Our electoral system is one of relatively few in the world that has no PR factor. Even simply counting the total votes cast does not give a true reflection of how the people feel due to tactical voting, not all parties standing in all constituencies and apathy caused by the "my vote doesn't count" syndrome.

My hope for this election is that there will be a higher turnout especially among younger voters. We will have some of the figures needed to strengthen or not our protests about the system. Groups like "Make Votes Matter" and "Open Britain" will not just give up, they will continue to push for a true democracy.

Even though your vote may not be for a winning candidate, your preferred party can rock the boat as UKIP did in 2015. They brought out a generally not very pleasant aspect in much of our population. Their rhetoric now still shows intolerance and racism which does nothing to make life better.

kittylester Thu 08-Jun-17 07:55:49

Can you explain what your post means Ggmk2?

Are you complaining about a few (in my case only slightly) right wing people posting?

whitewave Thu 08-Jun-17 08:15:53

When you vote for a Tory government today to not think that our dear country will be better for it

Do not think that mediocrity is the saviour of our future

Do not think that inequality will shrink

Do not think that a no Brexit deal will set us into the road to a bright future

Do not think that our NHS will be saved

Do not think Theresa May will rise to the challenges ahead

Do not think that your pension will be secure

Do not think that the welfare state will be safe

Do not think that austerity is the answer to failing economy

Do not think that the poorer will not get poorer

Do not think that faith schools are the answer to divisions in our country

Do not think

harrigran Thu 08-Jun-17 08:29:57

Dear God, there are a few thoughts for the day shock

GracesGranMK2 Thu 08-Jun-17 08:36:16

No Kittylester. I see no reason to do so.

LadyGracie Thu 08-Jun-17 08:38:27

Whatever happens we have to get on with it! I hope TM gets a big majority, but you never know. We'll see!

MaizieD Thu 08-Jun-17 08:43:57

Go on, then, turkeys. Vote for Christmas

Good 'thoughts', whitewave

rosesarered Thu 08-Jun-17 08:52:34

'Go on then turkeys vote for Christmas' says MaizieD you know what , I could say the same thing to all the Corbyn voters on here ! grin
The ususal thing for some left wing thinkers is that anybody who thinks differently to them must be deluded.

whitewave Thu 08-Jun-17 08:58:16

Enjoy your holiday rose

MawBroon Thu 08-Jun-17 09:34:02

Shame about the Jersey Royals phoenix I really thought a vote for May/Corbyn/Farron/Sturgeon/Screaming Lord Sutch (RIP) would fix things. sad

petra Thu 08-Jun-17 09:42:07

MaizieD
Because of your last comment, and many others in that vein I will be gloating if the vote doesn't go your way ( but only in the privacy of my home) grin

mostlyharmless Thu 08-Jun-17 09:43:01

I've got a feeling that the winning party will not survive for long. Brexit will be a minefield for whichever government is in power. If it's a hung parliament there will inevitably be uncomfortable compromises to be made. If Theresa May wins she might soon be ousted as leader as she hasn't performed well during this campaign. The Tory backbenchers will stop her getting her own way anyway.
Well maybe not. Who knows?

MawBroon Thu 08-Jun-17 09:45:08

So basically, it's going to be a mess?
What do elections cost US the taxpayer? What was the point? angry

whitewave Thu 08-Jun-17 09:51:55

Oh! Yes I forgot the most important thing that will cheer the Tory voter up

Vote Tory and kill foxes

So important.

nightowl Thu 08-Jun-17 09:54:43

Fox hunting is about the only thing I know Theresa May has always supported whitewave, or so she says. It must be the only thing she's never changed her mind about.
