Im not at all pro trump but IMO this is awful

It is not a "protest". Ive been on protests. They have a point and an aim

What is point/aim here?
That they don't like his appearance & don't want UK to even try to negotiate?
They don't want us to be the "bigger person" as a nation? they want us to be as childish and petty as him?

Its embarrassing and diplomatically dangerous, NOT an exercise in constructive protect or free speech

I doubt any visiting dignitaries will bother to read cartoons in newspapers suzied .
From what I have heard on the TV news the decision to allow it was down to the mayor of London .

suzied Fri 06-Jul-18 20:53:45

Don’t believe everything you hear on the tv news - they don’t give you the whole picture. The initial application went to the mayors office - The police and air traffic have the final say - so save some of your vitriol for them.

I'm genuinely amazed at the support for Trump, running alongside criticism of our own Sadiq Khan. Support for bullying racist, opposition to the Mayor of London -wow.

I can't get to the protest on Friday but I'll be there in spirit. this Potus is not fit for office. He poses a risk to world peace. He's also a loathsome, self publicising bully. Whats the problem with the people of this country demonstrating against him -including flying a demeaning balloon if that is how they choose to add to their protest.

Scarfe has been brilliant thus far ... I wonder how old he is now, but he's still got a superb wicked sharp pen!

lemongrove Fri 06-Jul-18 21:03:37

I have no problems with demos and marches, but simply think this inflatable is a juvenile idea.

lemongrove Fri 06-Jul-18 21:04:11

That doesn’t equate to support for Trump.

notanan2 Fri 06-Jul-18 21:06:32

Iam64 who exactly on this thread said they support Trump?

Not wanting to BEHAVE like him is the opposite of supporting him.

HE is shallow, we should not be IME

gillybob Fri 06-Jul-18 21:45:58

Respectfully, can you point out any “vitriol” I have used against Khan suzied? I stand by my thoughts that he as mayor, should have not allowed this silly, childish, and highly undignified show of disrespect towards a visiting president of the USA . Whatever your / his personal views against Trump I think we British are better than that kind of behaviour .

hildajenniJ Fri 06-Jul-18 22:05:00

How disrespectful. Trump is the President of the USA, and as such ought to be given the respect such high office demands. I don't like the man, but I would never go so far as to poke fun at him. I really hope that someone thinks better of this stunt.

PECS Fri 06-Jul-18 22:48:32

gillybob I believe Sadiq only had to confirm there was no legal reason to ban it. He neither approved or disapproved as approval was not needed. The inflatable just had to comply with existing laws which apparently it does. Ì hope I see it when I am on the protest.

lemongrove Fri 06-Jul-18 23:57:43

Will there be an inflatable when Saudi Arabia comes a visiting, or China or Iran I wonder?
Trump is seen as an easy target.Making him President was the American people’s worst mistake, but either you recognise the ‘office’ of President or you don’t.
A march or demonstration is one thing, but a crass balloon is another, and you have to winder who dreamed it up.....students?

lemongrove Fri 06-Jul-18 23:58:30

Wonder ( seems to be my typo day today)

suzied Sat 07-Jul-18 05:53:42

If you want to crowdfund for an inflatable when any other leader comes to the U.K. and go through all the hurdles needed to put it up then you can have one lemon. It’s not being done by an official body or political party. It’s called freedom. Just like cartoons, spitting image or Private Eye. We are allowed to make fun of politicians. Maybe you’d prefer to be in Saudi Arabia or Turkey where this sort of thing wouldn’t be allowed.

suzied Sat 07-Jul-18 05:57:48

I think it’s horrible btw but I defend the right of people to protest / make fun of politicians and I’d rather have a silly balloon than a march or disruptive demo.

maryeliza54 Sat 07-Jul-18 07:19:53

Because SK is if Asian heritage and only because of that he receives the most appalling racist abuse on social media gillybob honestly. Day after day after day.Just like DA. I
However re the Blimp personally I think it’s a poor idea. But it’s peaceful protest and we live in the semblance of a democracy. I think there will be more traditional priests as well. As for ignoring the visit instead - well given the ‘man’ we are dealing with, he’ll spin whatever we do so people might as well do what they want.

maryeliza54 Sat 07-Jul-18 07:21:46

Priests = protests. What else could it be?

NfkDumpling Sat 07-Jul-18 07:28:21

I’m with the ignore him brigade. Distain is far more British.

gillybob Sat 07-Jul-18 09:22:49

I don’t belong to any other social media sights maryeliza . I think/thought suzied was suggesting that I had used “vitriol” against SK when I know I haven’t .

The fact that he is of Asian decent is completely irrelevant as far as I am concerned . He has the power to block it and should’ve used that . Imagine some nasty group making a charactature blimp of him? Or any other political or royal figure for that matter ? It would be in such bad taste and I really can’t see the difference .

maddyone Sat 07-Jul-18 10:07:23

Khan is a good and family man! Really! I expect that the descriptor ‘good’ is a matter of opinion, and also depends on what exactly is being described. Why is he good? Because of his political views? Because he gives to charity? Because he likes the colour blue? Why is he good? On what is that comment based?

maddyone Sat 07-Jul-18 10:10:03

Also, yes Khan has a family, two daughters. Trump also has a family, several children I believe. Why does having a family make either of them good or bad?

maryeliza54 Sat 07-Jul-18 10:10:58

I agree absolutely it’s a poor idea gilly and it’s irrelevant what his heritage is. Sadly in the sm world for the racists on there of which there are many, it’s the only thing that counts about him. Do you remember Zac Goldsmiths racist mayoral campaign about SK? I don’t really think though that blimps are per se awful. There have been some very funny photoshopped images of DT on sm and the political cartoons in some papers often depict him as a crying baby throwing his toys out of the pram. I think this blimp is a bad idea because it distracts people from the real issue which is the unbelievable awfulness of this ‘man’.

maddyone Sat 07-Jul-18 10:12:43

Re the Blimp, or inflated balloon, which is how I think of it, I think it’s rather rude and unbecoming, but it’s a free country, so I’m not going to get too hot and bothered about it.

petra Sat 07-Jul-18 10:25:44

So far the crowdfunding website has raised £27,000+ for an image of Sadiq Kahn in a nappy to be flown over London.

maryeliza54 Sat 07-Jul-18 10:30:41

That sort of misses the point doesn’t it petra of it being DT who is the baby whilst SK’s crime is being Moslem

gillybob Sat 07-Jul-18 10:34:51

It was only to be expected petra and just as I feared .
