Experts play down Coronation crisis fears after royal author Anthony Holden suggested King Charles's ceremony could be invalidated because of his 1994 affair confession
Anthony Holden argued any coronation was likely to be invalid
The Church of England has never crowned a divorced man as King, let alone one who has publicly confessed to adultery, he said
It would require a revision of the coronation oath.

Henry the eighth?

Grandmabatty Sat 31-Dec-22 22:47:28

Sorry, that was stupid of me. Duh, he wasn't divorced when he was crowned. Sorry.

Lathyrus Sat 31-Dec-22 23:03:02

And there wasn’t a Church of England then either😬

Pittcity Sat 31-Dec-22 23:06:02

It's the 21st century and there are much more important things to worry about.

Smileless2012 Sat 31-Dec-22 23:07:19

That's right Grandmabatty he had his first marriage annulled, he made his fourth wife Anne of Cleaves his adopted sister, his second and fifth wives were executed and his sixth wife outlived him.

I'm sure if any changes have to be made to the coronation service so it wont be invalid, they'll be done in time.

ExperiencedNotOld Sat 31-Dec-22 23:08:40

Agree - these are evolving times with much more serious things to consider.

Lathyrus Sat 31-Dec-22 23:11:01

Umm, well as his first wife is dead, it’s not relevant.

Smileless2012 Sat 31-Dec-22 23:19:52

Good point Lathyrus.

Callistemon21 Sat 31-Dec-22 23:24:38

There's a first for everything.

The Church of England would never marry divorced people at one time.
However, we have been to C of E weddings where at least one spouse has been divorced.

😀
Good point!

nanna8 Sat 31-Dec-22 23:27:43

Well the whole thing is just silly. As Lathyrus says ,he has no living ex partners. I certainly wouldn’t want his dear brother to be King.

The church was all catholic till Henry’s divorce.

😲

No, he's way down the list now, thank goodness.

Spot on. There's a first for everything. This is the 21st century and new rules are springing up everywhere. I'm sure they will pass a new statute of Parliament in time to amend the coronation oath. Don't forget too, Charles may not have a living spouse but Camilla does.

Callistemon21 Sun 01-Jan-23 00:22:30

Oh yes, how could we forget Andrew.

However, Camilla will not be crowned, so perhaps that will be a technical point.

Grammaretto Sun 01-Jan-23 02:10:26

Edward VII was crowned. He was a notorious womaniser.
Camilla has had a total makeover since we first heard of her as that wicked marriage breaker.
It's all a soap opera IMO

lemsip Sun 01-Jan-23 09:13:38

the subject is about a divorced man being crowned king. nothing to do with an ex being alive or dead!

Galaxy Sun 01-Jan-23 09:16:13

I agree it's a soap opera, which is unfortunate for those within it, but that's what it is.

Chestnut Sun 01-Jan-23 09:18:29

But if you are divorced and then your spouse dies what does that make you? Surely you can't be classed as divorced.

What is your view then? Should he not be crowned King?

I remember Charles clearly saying a long time ago, that he could never be Head of the CofE Church- because as King of a very multicultural country, with so many religions and none, it would not be appropriate. I feel this is a much more important issue and I am sad that this is not been mentionned of late. The official links to the CofE in Government and the Legal/educationa,, etc, system- should be broken asap. If Heads of religious groups are to remain in the Lords, representatives of the other main faiths should be there too.

Anniebach Sun 01-Jan-23 09:33:25

Charles did not marry Camilla in church as did Megan marry
Harry. Charles and Camilla had a civil marriage and a church blessing.

I can only agree.

Can you provide any evidence for this FP because I don’t believe he said that.

Fleurpepper Sun 01-Jan-23 10:02:12

I remember it very clearly, but would have to look for evidence. No time today. Perhaps someone else.

It makes perfect sense, don't you believe? A king is for all, not just CofE.
