Why do people applaud themselves?

I can't get used to watching contestants on game and quiz shows clapping if they get an answer right.
What's this about?
Isn't it rude to congratulate yourself?

University Challenge and Mastermind are more subdued although I have noticed a few air punches even there.
Ah well, we are all different and that's a good thing.

I was also taught how to accept a compliment (smile politely and say thank you) and it certainly wasn't by cheering!

Rufus, I will tell you !!

I have no idea who your SK is but my Father would have thought him an exhibitionist!

A well done, clap on the back from ‘team’ players just isn’t enough for the egotistical types you describe.

We shall agree to differ.

Re churches, the clappy stand and wave ones are THRIVING. The pious ones are struggling to get bums on seats.

Times change.
Silly rules become redundant.

Has anyone been to a church wedding recently where, the congregation all applaud at the pronunciation? We were always taught never to clap in church. I suppose there's nothing wrong with it really but it feels odd to me.

I apparently joined in with the choir during high mass singing Que Sera Sera at the top of my voice. I was 3 years old and whisked out of the church pretty smartly. Probably so my Mum could stifle her giggles.

Sadly she died at 58 from cirrhosis of the liver so good to remember happier times.

You should have replied: "I am especially proud of not needing to continually tell others about my achievements"!
