@TpotAtheist: For atheists everything in the world is enough and every day is holy. Every day is an atheist holiday. It’s a day that we’re alive
―Jillette

It appealed to something deep.

I thought people could submit quotes they like— not necessarily to do with atheism or theism (that's why I put it in the philosophy forum) — any subject, just something that, as it were, hits the spot.

No idea who Jillette is, btw. Off to find out.

I will show just how dense I am but I can't understand "no good deed goes unpunished" and am relying on someone to enlighten me.

Perhaps it's cynicism. ie Don't expect thanks, rather beware that the recipient of your goodness will probably 'spit in your face'. grin

Randomly happened to hear someone on the Radio 4 book programme the other day quote Gramsci who apparently talked about 'the pessimism of the intellect and the optimism of the will'. For some reason it struck a chord with me, I get very depressed by the state of the world and it takes willpower to be optimistic. I think I'd like to amend it to say 'optimism of the heart and will'!

I've always taken "no good deed goes unpunished" to be just a humorous take on "no good deed goes unrewarded".

Thank you. It is obviously one we must put our own interpretation on. Personally I prefer sayings to be a bit easier to understand.

As for mortals, their days are like grass;
they flourish like a flower of the field;
for the wind passes over it, and it is gone,
and its place knows it no more

The past is a different country, they do things differently there....
Particularly relevant on Gransnet during some discussions.

This too shall pass.

However bad things are or however good.

I find the quote comforting.

grin It was always one of my favourite quotations, was it Oscar Wilde? He had some brilliant ones.

I think it means - be careful what you meddle in, don't delude yourself by thinking you are doing you are doing someone a favour.

No, apparently it was Clare Luce Booth. Along with 'Widowhood is a fringe benefit of marriage' and A hospital is no place to be sick'.

janerowena Thu 19-Mar-15 13:49:19

Oops, must be tired, Clare Boothe Luce.

What an amazing woman!

“Money can't buy happiness, but it can make you awfully comfortable while you're being miserable.” That's one of hers.
