Get rid of the games!!

Scrolling down the threads for discussions is now driving me nuts. It's nothing but Games, just spotted 8 discussion threads and 13 Games threads.

Please Gransnet, give the Games their own tab at the top. Surely Coronavirus is getting out of date. You could slot Games between Forums and Grandparenting.

Please get them off, there are so many they really are getting very annoying on a discussion forum and don't belong there.

Are you lot on actual computers? I use an android phone or tablet and don't have this problem as games are in the menu under 'games' as chat is in the menu under, believe it or not, 'chat'!

I think that some of us are referring to The Active List.
That’s what I get as the main option for browsing on the mobile site.
It’s confusing when we all seem to have different set ups

Rosalyn69 Wed 22-Mar-23 06:05:55

I agree. Too many. I play games on my phone but I don’t play them on here.

nanna8 Wed 22-Mar-23 06:31:51

Doesn’t bother me. I like the mix and scroll between games and discussion threads. I do agree we could do with more discussions but that is really up to us to start them.

It must be an older persons thing?
you don’t get this on mumsnet.

I don’t know why we can’t hide entire topics like you can on MN? that would sort this problem out.
As it is now I have to hide them all individually & it takes bloomin’ ages.

I don't care. I am not interested in the Games discussions so never read them. Obviously lots of Gransnetters enjoy them, so good luck to them, pun intended. grin What I do dislike on here are the obvious made up stories that seem to come from someone with a very strange imagination. I usually start to read then, then ignore them. Thankfully they soon seem to disappear from the "Active Discussion" thread.

I used to play the games a lot, but got a bit fed up with the repetitiveness of them.

The other day, I went to Last Hour and it was almost all games.
I have to admit to being irritated! 😉

The Games threads cannot be hidden on a computer and presumably not on a laptop either.

I use a laptop - Games, as in each individual thread, can be hidden.

Sticking up for the “Games” ……..
I don’t mind finding them if they are not on the Active list as I just click the tab that says “I’m On” .
The many games give pleasure to their GN supporters and help our brains to stay active.

Ailidh Wed 22-Mar-23 07:32:09

I always view on "Last Day", so plenty of games visible.

I don't play them but the only reason they show up on my screen is because others have, in the last day.
When there are hotter political items - "Partygate, The Return" anyone? - then they'll sink back down the list.

Charleygirl5 Wed 22-Mar-23 07:44:15

I loathe them and also think they should have their own section as many people do get enjoyment from playing them.

JackyB Wed 22-Mar-23 08:13:03

I don't understand the problem either. I either don't read them or just hide them. The nice thing is that then you get to see the threads that have just slipped off the bottom of the "Active" list as they move up to fill the gap.

Sometimes I might even join in with a game, but I get frustrated when someone has misunderstood the game and throws the thread off kilter.

The games DO have their own section. You can't set GN to hide all threads in one section, but, as has been said, we've asked for lots of things and have resigned ourselves to the fact that we're never going to get them.

And there are always those who start a thread in the wrong section. Either by mistake or because they are new and haven't figured it out yet.

FannyCornforth Wed 22-Mar-23 08:34:09

Ahem 🤫 Am I allowed to mention the fact that the Active List doesn’t work properly, and that there are several threads which hardly ever appear, regardless of whether they are posted on?

(I have hardly mentioned it this year.)

Froglady Wed 22-Mar-23 08:34:57

I agree.

Froglady Wed 22-Mar-23 08:35:59

Froglady

I agree.

Sorry, meant to say that I agree with the OP.

lemsip Wed 22-Mar-23 08:42:39

people need to start thinking up interesting posts then that will knock 'games' to back of list..

Vito Wed 22-Mar-23 09:05:38

Totally agree, they drive me nuts. Would make so much sense for them to have their own heading .

NanKate Wed 22-Mar-23 09:10:08

I think if Games were removed GN would look very thin on the ground.

IMO I doubt HQ will do anything about it, just like they ignored the protests about these dratted adverts in the middle of threads and equally the small ads bottom right which are put there if someone has the audacity to whiz through the main ads.

NanKate Wed 22-Mar-23 09:11:36

I remember you saying that Fanny. Sadly HQ appears to ignore our protests.

FannyCornforth Wed 22-Mar-23 09:14:14

I don’t really understand how Games threads could be accommodated elsewhere.
All of the threads are on the same platform.
It would mean developing another platform to run along side it wouldn’t it?
I know absolutely zilch about website development, but I know that a few on here definitely do.
The only way I can see it working would be if HQ made it that Games threads didn’t appear in the Active List.
(I remember Mumsnet removing the Staff Room threads from the active threads during lockdown as some people were being abusive to teachers)

And if they won’t look into the Active List malfunctioning, they’re not likely to make any big changes site wise.
It’s not a big deal in the grand scheme (but I can hide them, so I would say that! And there are a handful of Games that I enjoy)

Cross post! Yes, I was always moaning about it grin

faye17 Wed 22-Mar-23 09:32:34

A little bit of tolerance goes a long way

silverlining48 Wed 22-Mar-23 09:41:41

When posting on for example the hip thread it either fails to register on Active at all or if it does it’s straight away at the bottom about to drop off or if it actually is higher up on Active it drops down alarmingly fast and then disappears altogether.
It’s annoying and a complete mystery because it is in its third iteration and has helped so many people.

Me too. They are always first time posters, and the stories are usually long and very complicated but many kind GNs do reply helpfully, with replies often running to pages.

I think they are given the benefit of the doubt because they could be genuine, but I don’t respond.

They are taking over the discussion boards. I counted more games than discussions.

This..
