Thin hair

My hair seems to be getting thinner with each birthday
sad
Does anyone have the same issue?

polyester57 Wed 25-Apr-18 17:10:12

Please elaborate. How old are you? How much thinner? I have always had thin brown hair. Funnily enough, the grey hair that I am getting now seems to be thicker than my brown hair was before. My grandmother and great-aunts had lovely full heads of white hair. Or so it seems to me now with time passing.

amiesgran Wed 25-Apr-18 17:15:18

I am 64. Seems to have gotten worse since I was about 50ish - quite gradual thinning confused

Moocow Wed 25-Apr-18 17:20:48

Same here , since i turned 50 but feels like every season . Makes me very [blue]

Moocow Wed 25-Apr-18 17:21:34

sad!

Panache Wed 25-Apr-18 17:22:38

Oh1 dear a ton of sympathies anniesgran........I have written in several threads expressing the growing new problems I have had and still having with my hair, but then it has always presented me with various issues.
My hair is snow white, baby soft and it has a mind of its own with a parting forming at the front (distinct thinning of hair) whilst my crown seems to have disappeared!
All this is of no help or uplift and I am sorry to say that I cannot even help myself.
I do believe it goes with the territory of aging however I again seem to have had problems from an early age........whether perceived or actual is anyone`s guess.
I am sure you will find plenty of useful advice with other GN`s who seem such a canny bunch, and always eager to help.
I can but add.......Good luck!

I think gradual thinning is just something you have to accept as part of growing older. Body hair will also thin and facial hair will grow. It´s something to do with oestrogen levels. If you´ve always had a thick head of hair and it´s getting thinner, just accept it. If your scalp is showing through, see a doctor, there may be supplements you can take.

amiesgran Thu 26-Apr-18 11:56:52

Sorry to hear that Panache.

My scalp is not showing through (yet) but it is a pain as I used to have such thick hair. Any tips to add a bit of volume would be greatly appreciated smile.

I totally sympathise with you amiesgran and others. I'm 56 and my hair has been getting thinner and thinner for about 10 years now. It really depresses me as there is little/nothing I can do about it. I hate going to the hairdressers and I dread a windy day as I look almost bald on top if it blows. My sister is a few years younger and has fabulous naturally blonde hair and lots of it too.

Another option if your scalp is beginning to show through is to wear a hat. Good idea if it's sunny anyway.

I knew my hair was getting thinner because my head was cold so often, including in bed! Then recently I saw a picture of me from when I was eighteen—I had two really thick long plaits. I hadn't realised just how much my hair had thinned.

Fortunately I like wearing a hat. Right now I have an ancient and holey lace wool square scarf (Laura Ashley from when she was still alive) tied round my head. Even indoors.

Panache Thu 26-Apr-18 15:51:31

Sadly I am one of those who look a right berk in a hat,any kind of hat and I have then people asking after my health.............so obviously not a good look and certainly NOT a viable option.

However dread of dread,I have succumbed to what I had promised myself for a few years.........I sent for a wig!
After much staring at the catalogues and on the web I found one that seemed to be exactly the style I would so love,so after finding the right colour to match my own I sent off my request.

It arrived yesterday.I took one look, gave it a bit of ashake and put it straight on my head,no gimmicky net or tucking in my own short hair.
My husband has not liked the idea and that is why I have resisted for all these troubling years.
I marched into our sitting room where he was reading the paper,he looked up,did a double take............literally gasped and spoke quite obviously with sincerity........".Wow that is absolutely gorgeous, just the way I have wanted to see your hair for years,i has taken 10 years off your age"
From him this is indeed a compliment and some!
So overcoming his dislike of wigs has been a great achievement, but to be honest, the colour match is perfect,it fits so well and there is no need for any faffing............just shake and wear.

I am now about to approach my H/D and ask her to cut my own thinning hair in exactly the same style.............and so although the wig will come out the best in looks, there should not be too much of a marked difference between both.............believe you me I am one happy and much relieved person.

Where there is a will, there is a way ladies!!

I look horrible in hats too Panache and only wear one if I am out in the cold. Good for you getting the wig if it boosts your self confidence. Glad your DH likes it too. smile

Maggiemaybe Thu 26-Apr-18 16:36:10

Well done you, Panache, for taking the plunge! I think I might be heading down that road too (I look a b****r in a hat). Is the wig comfy to wear, and do you mind me asking where you got it from?

There've been other threads on this subject that you might find helpful, amiesgran, this being one of the longest.

Maggiemaybe ........It will be my pleasure in pointing you in the right direction......this is the site I used....https://www.naturalimagewigs.co.uk/
My own is by Paula Young (the wig of my choice was PYRCK/60 in snow white).

However the site gives you an endless choice, both in styles and colour,so well worth a good browse
It took some 10 days to arrive.whilst
you can buy their recommended stand, shampoos etc too.

It is very light and comfy, absolutely no faffing required and it looks unbelievably natural.Quite frankly I doubt if anyone that does not know you of old will ever know it is a wig.

Good luck and let us know your decision!

Thank you very much, Panache. I've just spent half an hour skimming through the earlier thread I linked to. It's really interesting, checking out all the information and support we gave each other - Gransnet at its best! Now I'm off to look at the link you've kindly given! smile

I've started using Roots shampoo and conditioner and I feel it makes a difference

annifrance Fri 27-Apr-18 09:56:21

I'm 68 and my hair has definitely thinned in recent years. I have started using Nioxon products and it's looking a bit better.

Panache Fri 27-Apr-18 09:59:56

Both of you are speaking of new hope to the so many of us losing our own hair.............so a big thank you.

Blinko Fri 27-Apr-18 10:09:13

Wigs are brilliant nowadays, aren't they? I don't need one at the mo, but if I did, I would. IYSWIM.

baw53 Fri 27-Apr-18 10:12:06

I use Mane and Tail .It does have a pic of a horse on it but this particular formula is for human hair.It is available online slightly cheaper than it is in store, but not all supermarkets stock it.I get mine from Sainsbury’s and it is in the same section as human shampoo. It coats the hair with something or other, but it is not at all sticky , just makes it look thicker.I use ‘ normal volumising shampoo occasionally but really prefer the results I get with Mane and Tail.

Marianne1953 Fri 27-Apr-18 10:14:52

I know this happens, however, not for me as my hair is as think as ever. Menopause has never really changed anything for me other than the obvious. I only ever had a few symptoms at peri menopause stage.

Applegran Fri 27-Apr-18 10:18:32

I now have thinning hair and wish I hadn't ! but I know it is a frequent thing to happen to women as we get older. I was on HRT for many years, into my 70s ( longer than the doctors advise) and finally came off it - which is when my hair started to thin. I think it is a lot to do with hormones, and difficult therefore to change. My scalp shows now - cannot quite go for a wig - wouldn't it be hot? But it is down to the wig wearer - if you like it and feel comfortable - go for it!

Panache Fri 27-Apr-18 10:27:24

Applegran...........may I help to put your mind at rest to some degree, although to be fair, wearing a wig is yet new territory for me too............but the one I have opted for is as light as a feather and has a special coolcap built in ......allowing air to circulate,........quite honestly you can easily forget one is wearing it!!!
It is also adapted for summer wear.
Technology........even in wigs.......has come on in leaps and bounds!!!

tonibolt Fri 27-Apr-18 10:29:46

I sympathise. My hair started disappearing down the plughole at an alarming rate about 4 years ago, (late fifties) and when I brushed, there were quite big clumps left on the brush. The excessive shedding has stabilised now, but the front is extremely sparse, and I am very conscious of it. I still think it is continuing to thin though, and I have fine hair, which doesn’t help. I have tried Nioxin, recommended by my hairdresser, but sadly saw no improvement. I believe some do find it helps. (Much cheaper online than in the salon, if anyone is going to try it). I look awful in hats, so many thanks for the link for wigs, I will have a browse.

Apricity Fri 27-Apr-18 10:32:14

In a word, yes! Especially if you start with thinnish fine hair.
