wearing make-up

I used to put on make-up, especially lipstick, eye shadow and mascara, before going to work in the morning. If we were going out at night I even had false eyelashes.
Then for the last 20 years or so everyone seems to have gone au naturel. But recently I've noticed more women, even my age, look as if they've started to make up again. Especially lipstick and foundation.
I don't think I could be bothered - what do you think?

I think make-up looks very aging from middle age onwards.

To my eye, almost everyone looks better without it

I'm old school. If I don't put my Creme Puff on and some lipstick I look like Dick Emery's mother.

MissAdventure Wed 21-Aug-19 22:05:27

I don't look great with or without makeup these days.

I can't even decide which is the less of two evils.

I always wear make-up. I'm 60. I wear:

foundation, highlighter, blusher, translucent powder, mascara and lipstick - and I pencil my eyebrows.

I wear the lot.

I look about 85 without makeup and 72 my true age with makeup.

notanan well, I'd rather people say 'oh, you look well!' when I wear some light foundation, blusher, lippie etc than ask in a concerned tone 'are you feeling tired?'

But perhaps I'm not middle aged yet grin

I'm not sure how, if you see someone wearing make-up, you'd know what they looked like without it confused

I feel better with make up on & if that makes me oppressed, or a victim of marketing/advertising/pressure to conform, I really couldn't care lessgrin

I’ve never worn lipstick, dislike the feel of it. I did wear a cover up foundation when I had a skin issue, now diagnosed and fixed so I’m back to bare skin. I do always wear mascara and colour my eyebrows. I love the individuality of us all.

Callistemon Wed 21-Aug-19 23:05:41

I must tone down the thick eyebrows, spikey eyes, red lips and coloured, long false talons though! grin

MawB Wed 21-Aug-19 23:24:40

Unless make up is done very subtly, I think most women (and men) can look like painted clowns with their drawn on thick eyebrows, spikey eyes, red lips and coloured long, false talons...and then there's all that bling
Do you know a lot of men like that?

Frankly I don’t know any women among my friends and acquaintances who match your description either.

Its a self esteem thing with me ,I grew up being told my sister was the beautiful one and it kind of stuck in my head.I think I look much better with makeup and as long as I feel that I'll wear it .
Strangely my sister and I are often mistaken for each other ? Maybe I wasn't the plain jane as I thought I was for all these years .

Always a full face of make up for me when I was younger, I used it almost as armour. But as I've got older I rely less and less on it and having just had a think, I realise that the last time I applied foundation was last Summer. I do however apply a bit of brow liner and a do a light flick with the mascara wand on most days.

Maybe those of you judging women for wearing make up would like to critique my mum to her face. She's 92 in November and still wears makeup when she goes out. grin

She's given up on the talons, though. They make it too hard to get her blood presssure pills out of the packet. wink

Itsnotme Thu 22-Aug-19 05:01:13

I was wearing the whole lot I until about 6months age. I think it’s part laziness and partly I can’t see the point when I’m not going out except to the gym. I still put mascara on as I look tired without it. I need to know what foundation is good for wrinkly skin, can anyone recommend ?

Thank you ladies. I'll work my way through the advice.

LABAIK: it's no good trying to do a fine eye line after a certain age. The skin is too crepey. Go for a soft look using a wedge shaped diagonal brush and charcoal eyelid powder, pushing it into the roots of your eyelashes.

Good luck!

How censorious non-makeup wearers are, They will soon be telling us that a woman who wears makeup is no better than she ought to be,

annep1 Thu 22-Aug-19 07:05:08

When I was young I rarely wore makeup- didn't like it. Now it's the opposite. I look and feel much better with it than without.
I use Boots No 7 which is hypoallergenic.
I use moisturiser, foundation, concealer which hides black marks at eyes, mascara, eyebrow pencil and lipstick. Sometimes I use airbrusher (not sure it does anything) and illuminator.
I don't put a lot on which I think is best and I wouldn't use a deep colour lipstick.
I don't use eyeshadow or powder.
Like another poster I keep trying eyeliner but I can't get a thin line. Perhaps it doesn't work with older eyes.
I don't use makeup if I'm not going out but I still blow dry and style my hair after showering. I think its important to stick to a routine, as much as possible, of looking after your appearance as you get older.

I'll try your tip Guilia

My make up looks ok when I put it on but seems to wear off quicker than it should during the day. Perhaps I am buying too cheap? What brands do people use? Are there better products geared to my old and wrinkly old face?

Oh relax! Saying you dont like how make up looks is no different from saying you do like the made up look

Its not personal. Its an opinion on aesthetics! And we are discussing aesthetics!

notanan2 Thu 22-Aug-19 08:40:44

Saying you dont like a fashion isnt "judging" people who do.

Its just judging the fashion!

notanan2 Thu 22-Aug-19 08:44:35

I bet the very posters wailing about how judgemental people who dont think make up looks nice have fashions they dont like: tattoos? Jeggings? Heavy brows? Lip fillers? Sliders etc

BlueSapphire Thu 22-Aug-19 08:47:55

If I am not going out or expecting visitors then I just wear moisturiser or a suncream if gardening.
Otherwise I wear the lot! Primer, foundation, translucent powder, blusher, eyeshadow, liner, mascara and lipstick. Would feel undressed if I went out without it!

Monica you just made me splutter into my coffee! grin
