Wrinkles- what has happened?

Two years ago I was under enormous stress, Paw had been seriously ill for months and who knew what the future held.
He died that November so I was not at all surprised that it showed in my face.
Two years on I seem to have aged a whole lot more and hardly dare look in the mirror, without recoiling at the wrinkles.
When did my age (71) catch up with me?

I was looking pretty good for my age. Then I got cancer. Even afterwards, I looked OK. But then a year or so later, I noticed a fellow-cancer friend was looking rough. Worse than she had while ON chemo. Lo and behold, I realised, it had caught up with me too.

I think it was the arduousness of the treatment. It aged me by at least 5 years, if not more. I don't like it but I'm lucky to be alive. I try to see it that way.

GagaJo The surgeon who does my annual checkups told me that chemo and radiotherapy ages you by seven years.

Maw I think ageing just creeps up on us ....one day we look ok, the next week we have turned into our grandmothers.
I think you look stylish and attractive, so don’t worry about it.

Have discovered a very useful aspect of ageing ( fat tum)...I can balance my iPad on it.?

GagaJo Sun 03-Nov-19 22:46:35

Suki70, that sounds about right. I went into it looking hottish for 40ish and came out looking older than my age.

Oh yes, grief has taken its toll on me.
I developed acne, amongst the deep lines and wrinkles.

I barely recognise the person I was anymore.

It does ceeep up maw, irritating isn’t it? We share an age and I’ve certainly noticed it this year. I tend to wear something brightly coloured as a distraction but I guess few people really take notice. Fortunately without my glasses I sort of look OK. smile.

Cornergran, I look awful without my glasses - I don't have crow's feet or many wrinkles, but I have dark circles, so my glasses hide it ?

Hi *Maw*, we are the same age, and yes I too have noticed more signs of aging. I never took good care of my face when I was younger though so I guess I can't have too much to complain about.

I don't have a lot of wrinkles as I have been using moisturizer and Aloe Vera gel on my fave for the past 6 years. I do notice that I have droopy eye lids and have always had dark circles under my eyes. (Half circles to be exact)

Guess I will have to live with that because no way will I ever be able to afford cosmetic surgery.

Wanted to let you know that I saw a photo that you posted of yourself a year or two ago and I think you look very nice, so don't worry about a few wrinkles. You look great!

I've lots of wrinkles and lines which Ive grown to like- But I've noticed that when I pull my hair up into a messy bun on top of my head that some of the wrinkles and lines are less noticeable- The pulling I guess creates kind of a temporary face lift!

rosecarmel - known as the Croydon facelift!!

I'm glad it's not just me!!

DGS was here at half-term and I was taking photos of him slurping up noodles - accidentally pressed the selfie icon and without warning a close up of a haggard old woman filled the screen! shock

I'd been feeling chipper with a spring in my step that morning when out and about with DGS as he's such good fun - my face made me a bit sad hmm

I’ve always looked after my skin so I don’t have too many wrinkles. HOWEVER my face has started to sag downwards and there are creases around my chin but that’s life and as long as I am breathing and can get out for coffee and cake I’m happy.

Have any of you noticed that you look better in some mirrors but not others, it’s so strange ?

dragonfly46 Mon 04-Nov-19 07:30:20

Yes I notice the sagging! Wow chemo and radio ageing you 7 years - got that to look forward to - will make me look 80! My solution - only look in the mirror once a day without the specs on!

NfkDumpling Mon 04-Nov-19 07:37:57

I’m 71 as well - at least for the next nine days!

It’s all the surplus skin. All over me except for my feet. I think, well I know, that HRT has helped a bit to keep age at bay but I’m not sure that loosing weight is a good idea anymore as the skin doesn’t shrink. Just hangs there.

NfkDumpling Mon 04-Nov-19 07:39:27

Like dragonfly I only look in the mirror once a day, and then only briefly to make sure my hair isn’t standing on end.

Pink lighting helps!

Someone strange has moved into my house. An old lady who keeps looking at me in the mirror. Weird and a bit creepy. Particularly bad when she catches me unawares.

BlueSapphire Mon 04-Nov-19 08:48:00

Maw you look wonderful, and also very stylish! You have no need to worry about how you look.

DoraMarr Mon 04-Nov-19 08:53:37

I had quite a shock yesterday when I looked in the mirror with my reading glasses on. Shan’t do that again.

Witzend Mon 04-Nov-19 08:54:27

I find it helpful never to look in the mirror with my glasses on. My reflection is magically so much less wrinkly!

I use the same tactic to avoid seeing dust up the stairs etc. - just have to make sure I have glasses on if having a bit of a blitz when someone's coming to stay.

Nortsat46 Mon 04-Nov-19 09:04:52

LullyDully, when the strange woman is not at your house, she’s at mine.
She catches me unawares too ... it’s quite disconcerting.

?

Yorksherlass Mon 04-Nov-19 09:19:59

Wow that strange old woman sure gets about , I saw this her this morning briefly, scared me alright !! ?

annodomini Mon 04-Nov-19 09:20:37

I was shocked when my GD drew a picture of me. She had drawn me with my mouth turned down. I looked in the mirror and saw what she saw. I do try now to smile but can't go around all the time with an inane grin on my face!
