Tights, forgotten how uncomfortable they are!

I have just come back from a funeral. This has meant for the first time in years I have worn a dress and the dreaded tights. I had forgotten how uncomfortable they are! I am rather overweight ( size 16 / 18). I never know whether to go for pull everything in ones, or let it all hang loose ones. Then they roll over at the top and slide down at the crotch. Pulling them up is undignified and usually means I stick my finger through them. I am at a wedding on Saturday so have to go through the whole tight wearing scenario again! Any hints or advice anyone? I even contemplated wearing knickers over my tights!! Thank you. Xx

Enjoy your day, Lizbethann55. I’m sure you’ll be fine.

Wolford tights or hold-up are comfortable but expensive.
Make sure you buy the right size and hand wash.

I had some that kept their shape for years. Not something I wear much now of course.

Hate tights, the devil’s work. Thought I had found the answer in wearing hold ups to a wedding a few years ago. Worked fine for a while then wrinkled up in a heap over my lower legs, ended up a dead ringer for Norah Batty. I stay with dependable smart trousers now. Hope you enjoy the wedding, hopefully with no tights issues.

I just stick to wearing trousers. I've not worn a frock or skirt for years, even as mother of the groom I wore very smart pants and tops - sold as mother of the bride/groom garments.
I am not able to wear fashion footwear, and as there is a very limited choice that I can wear, wearing pants helps that issue too.

Can't think how I stay relatively alert in general and yet have managed to miss the existence of snag tights. Thank you JJ and, of course, GN for this invaluable info. Today's purchase!

This year I have rediscovered dresses and whilst I wear bare legs in summer the winter is an issue.

I have never heard of snag tights. I usually buy Woolford, but will definitely give snag tights a go.

Ohmother Fri 30-Jul-21 09:17:29

I’ve gone to wearing leggings under a long top in every season but summer but would do summer if it was a wedding. I hate tights!!! ?

Love the names of the Snag tight colours - Builders' Tea!!

The more you think about tights the more you notice. Just clicked that Priti Patel always has Nora Batty ankle wrinkles. I suppose she has her mind on other things.

I haven’t worn tights in years but used to find that either the light support or tummy control type (usually M&S) stayed up best. Light support (Elbeo)were sheer enough not to look “support” but I gave up tights altogether when the contortions involved in getting them on became too much for me!
You could try hold ups, but do NOT moisturise your legs (or they won’t stick) and any other than a brand new pair would not be reliable enough for a wedding (oh the shame of one unrolling!)
To suggest OP lose weight by the day after tomorrow was mean-spirited MisChatelaine though, wasn’t it?

I have, and have always had cold feet so I wear tights nearly all the time, under trousers as well as dresses. Sheer ones in summer, thick thermal ones in winter (and socks, but that is another story).

If I find that one make are too short I throw them away and try another make. M&S used to be awful for having tights that were designed to fit only women with very short legs. I am quite long in the leg and have always found John Lewis tights fit, ditto Superdrug.

Surely the answer to the OP's problem is to choose elegant trouser suits or mix and matched elegant trousers and jackets for occasions like weddings, funeral and their like.

Don’t wear them Lizbethann! Ring around to have appt to spray tan or use one of the many self tan products for legs, brown bare legs look so much better than tights anyway

I’m a big fan of snag tights too, bought my first ones last winter and loved them, so comfy and they do last really well.

Maya1 Fri 30-Jul-21 10:45:22

I'm also a hugh fan of snag tights. I found them in lockdown.
The colours are beautiful and the tights are really excellent quality.
The more you buy, the bigger the discount you get.

You could try pop socks,i hate wearing tights too,and bra`s.
Comfort is key.

The big bloomers that I get from thebigbloomerscompany to wear under dresses are great in that they actually lift saggy bottoms like mine.I’ve just seen that they do tights as well. Because I’ve got huge legs and massive thighs I find the bit that’s missing from most tights is a decent gusset (don’t you just hate that word!). And, of course, you can’t try tights on so if you buy them and they don’t fit you’re stuck with them. Along with shoes they have been the bane of my life (well, one of them anyway).

Horrible wasn’t it. As I pointed out I’ve never been massively overweight but have always had huge legs and struggle with finding tights, Even when I went down to 7 stone (eating disorder) my legs were still disproportionally large for me body. In fact, when I had yet another slender tone type treatment the girl doing it said that I needed to put weight on to make myself more in proportion. She was right: I was always trying to be a stone under what should have been my normal weight.

TightsUK have a fantastic selection and size guide. I've never had problems with any from them

Katek Fri 30-Jul-21 11:28:45

Wear trousers! Haven’t owned tights for decades……hate the things. Calf length skirt with a light fake tan can look good as well.

pen50 Sun 01-Aug-21 10:36:37

I wear M&S hold up stockings because I can't bend my knees enough to put on tights. Work well, don't cause allergy problems (unlike some), stay in place. Don't go by the picture on the packet, the band needs to go above the widest point of your thigh, just below your crotch. I have a 31" inside leg, size 14, and I buy size medium. There are opaque black ones for winter and sheer ones for spring and summer.

deaneke Sun 01-Aug-21 10:41:27

Put a pair of briefs over the tights!

MawBe Sun 01-Aug-21 10:43:51

How was the wedding OP ?
Hope you escaped any Nora Batty moments!

aonk Sun 01-Aug-21 10:46:58

I’m glad the OP has a dress for the wedding. I realise others may disagree but there’s nothing better than a dress to help you feel glamorous and feminine. For those with leg or shoe issues a maxi dress would be lovely and so comfortable.

ARCC Sun 01-Aug-21 10:53:10

I am a size 8 to 10 and still hate tights and am never comfortable

Danma Sun 01-Aug-21 10:54:08

Too late for your wedding maybe but these maybe worth a try for future

I’m have long fat legs and always had trouble keeping tights up until I discovered Snag Tights. They really are comfortable
