Music around the house all the time or silence?

My husband-and most people it seems-always has some form of music on in the background at home. I hate this. It’s not because I hate all music, it’s because for me, there are times when I enjoy listening to music but at home, if I’m doing chores or relaxing/reading, I find it irritating and distracting. I never turn it off while he’s around as that’s not fair, but am I very odd? What do others think??….

I used to have music on most of the time but don’t seem to listen to it much these days. I always used to have a favourite album that I’d play to death. Not sure why that is. I do always seem to have a song going round in my head though, usually something I don’t like much. I’ve always wondered if it’s just me that suffers from ear worms.

BBC Radio 4 here, for many years it was the World Service when I moved from the UK , but I moved to Radio 4.
DD used to complain about it all the time until she sat an Economics exam at school here and it was exactly what the radio 4 programme she had been 'forced' to listen to the day before. She got an A+.
Listening now.

Ooh I forgot another thing music wise that I don’t like….music in shops! Not that browsing has been that likely lately, but I can’t cope with that either!!

We usually the radio on in the mornings, quiet in the afternoons and TV in the evenings.
When we get in the car we both reach to turn on the radio for music or a podcast.
In the past when we drove to the continent for holidays we would make compilation music tapes for the journeys.

I have Radio 4 on most of the time for company, music if I am in the right mood. I sometimes like the quiet, but living alone now, it depresses me.

Mainly peace and quiet for me. I like some music but like to choose when and what.
Constant background noise drives me mad.

We have music on most of the day, listening to Boom Radio at the moment. In the mornings, up to 10, we listen to LBC.

Love chart music on , practically all the time . DH hates music on so bought myself earbuds. Now both happy and he has the added hilarity of watching me miming and bopping to non existent tunes!!!!?

Unfortunately, from having it on all the time before I turned fifty, since my divorce I always have radio 4 on, even through the night. Music makes me sad, although I have nothing really to complain about these days

Here's another Radio 4 listener, lots of interesting and informative stuff on there, starting with the Today programme. I don't have it on all day, though, as DH not a fan.

I can’t stand DJ inane chat on the radio , and R2 just plays awful pop. But I have just found Boom radio. It’s great for 50;s 60,s musici remember and sing along too ,

I listen to Classic fm a lot, especially when driving or on my laptop, cooking etc. I enjoy it, and it also helps to cancel out my tinnitus.

grannyrebel7 Mon 03-May-21 18:35:36

I like Radio 2 and have it on a lot. If not that I have my playlists or just ask Alexa to play something I like. DH has developed a liking for LBC which I hate. He has it on as soon as we wake up and we go to sleep to it too. Soooo annoying ?

Floradora9 Mon 03-May-21 21:47:01

That would drive me mad . If I play Classic FM in the kitchen when working I make sure all doors are closed . Our neighbour is doing an extension by himself and plays his radio all the time . We had to have a word with him as we could hear it in our house . His choice of station was terrible too .

Usually some background music or tv, but very low volume. For music I stream an app called Accuradio, and you can pick your genre. Normally for me is 70's and 80's music.

Will admit to tuning up Led Zepplin once in a while while doing housework.

Since my dh died 2 years ago I have the radio on most of the time: lbc or boom, I find silence can become very hard to cope with.

I only play music when I can sit down and listen to it properly. By coincidence I was able to do that for an hour both today and yesterday. I found some newly written songs by a Christian collective called The Porter’s Gate and they’re well worth listening to.
(Only if you like that sort of thing of course.) wink

annodomini Mon 03-May-21 23:48:24

Like Cabbie, I use music to counteract my tinitus, but also TV and talk radio. I put on Classic FM when I go to bed and tell Alexa to stop playing in twenty or thirty minutes by which time I am almost always sound asleep.

I don't have the radio on other than R4 on Saturdays, as I am usually too busy to listen properly. I don't like music radio, as I can't choose the music and I get irritated by the presenters, so I usually have music of my own playing (ie playlists, not me playing music?). I find that if I want to concentrate it helps to have something to 'screen out', and if I'm pottering about the house it helps to have something to tune into.

Radio news in the morning, turn to Cool Jazz to relax me after the awful morning news.

Elusivebutterfly Tue 04-May-21 08:50:46

I like peace and quiet. I haven't listened to the radio or music for years. I had too many years of other people's choice of music and TV. This is a bonus of living alone.

bikergran Tue 04-May-21 09:47:38

Peace and silence here.

I like to choose my own music so not really keen on the radios random songs.

Over the last year or so every time I put the car radio on it is either depressing songs, noisy songs, or people sending request in for Sunday love songs, naming half the family who I have never know confused .

So have reverted back to my cd collection in the car.(yes ABBA all the way to work) smile

henetha Tue 04-May-21 09:50:44

It depends on my mood. Just lately I prefer silence, but when things cheer up again I shall hopefully go back to lots of music around the house.

LynneH Tue 04-May-21 11:42:42

Have you tried asking him to listen via headphones?
