I have hopes for British manufacturing once again. Especially the sort that will give them decent employment opportunities.
Scottish political mess. Is Devolution working?

SubscribeWell said, Libby Purves and Peter Tatchell! Tatchell is quoted as saying "The left must listen to Brexit supporters and their concerns. Very wrong to dismiss them all as racists and xenophobes". Of those anguished 'hysterical lefties': "many of them mean well [ouch!] yet elitism erupted like a poisoned boil". Superb!
Elitism. The other thing the hysterical left whine about when they're not too busy calling anyone who doesn't agree with them a bigot. Yes. Quite. In spite of my high level of education, and my husband's, we both "get it" in a way that many with similar backgrounds don't seem to. Perhaps we still feel a connect to those of our families who were at the runt end of society only two generations ago. Perhaps we understand better the effect of "arrogant, incompetent Brussels institutions, and the decades when governments neglected inequality".
Purves does not skim over actual racism at all, but she says quite rightly that the vast majority of people are not racists or xenophobes. She's right.
Thank you, Libby Purves.

No lazy stereotyping of Remain voters here then. As a coal face worker's daughter from the North East of England, I feel slightly more than a vague connect to the runt end of society (nice description, btw). My luvvie niece (granddaughter of said miner and a lorry driver, and no, she doesn't like the term) has just graduated from her performing arts course and the probable loss of a lot of EU arts funding is an additional worry as she tries to break into the acting world that's already hard enough for a very talented girl from a modest background. But hey, it's a larf being mocked by a diplomat's daughter.
daphnedill - I am afraid that I am not quite sure what it is that you are trying to say.
Ah well! C'est la vie! You probably wouldn't understand anyway.
As someone said yesterday;
Not all of the Outers voted because of rascism but all racists and xenophobes voted out
Good article thatbags but then I usually agree with Libby Purves. So many are out of touch, which is surprising in these days of endless chatter.
Not racist? UKIP , the BNP and EDL are not racist ?
I voted leave and I love a latte.
I'm not a clever person, I don't know what we have to come, but I know this, all the abuse,in my day to day routine, has come from the inners.I know two people who won't say which way they voted now because of the abuse they've had.And the nasty ones on here, good grief!
I'm not a racist or any other ist,I must be one of the most tolerant of people,I'm always being told to say no,but the wealthy elite have not the slightest clue about the ordinary person, neither do they care,oh yes they pretend to,and my lot are so gullible, they will follow anyone from the X factor,or similar, not knowing they're lining someone's pocket again.Anyway, you all know what I mean.
So much fir our arm-chair socialists having any understanding of those on zero-hours contracts in Sunderland and elsewhere and why they might have voted as they did.
DD how dare you show your arrogance by talking to another GNetter like that? You sound like a stroppy teenager talking to her parents. Grow up.
Thank you for the article Thatbags I'm with you on this one - even though my daughter is barely speaking to me. She works for a multi barristers chambers which has work in Brussels and they are all up in arms and her husband a scientist is also up in arms- did we have law and science before the EU?
I so agree rosearered.
I think most people only chat with like-minded people. They miss out.
I purposely shop for instance, in a mix of towns of various social mix and status from each other.
I dont keep speaking to the same people. When I go to social things, I dont keep speaking just to the same people. You can learn all sorts from other people too.
I was taught from a young age, that everyone is important.
Young people have only ever been in the EU.
Perhaps it is up to us older ones, to let them know there was life before the EU!
Ever heard of virtue signally Obi
Or even virtue signalling?
Don't worry if you haven't my iPad doesn't either
Anyone think the media are reading gransnet, by the way?
I have wondered before about a couple of things, but yesterday morning, could have been on the Andrew Neil section, someone mentioned "best of 3" about referendum,s which was a remark I think it was nanaandgrampy made, I think on saturday evening[may have wrong spelling and wrong poster there], and I joked and grinned back.
Unless that remark the poster had picked up from elsewhere herself.
Just a thought. As you were.
Crumbs, I hope I am not doing that. I will have to watch that. Please pick me up on that if you think you spot it. I can't stand that sort of thing personally.
This is an amusing headline about a tiny minority of a particular group of people. It doesn't speak for 99% of those who voted to remain, nor does the article speak for the entire Brexit voter.
Yes undoubtedly this was a vote against the elite, whether those who voted to leave chose the right fight remains to be seen.
However you look at it this country is totally divided. The interests of all the population must be considered in the following coming months and years.
The importance of who we choose to lead us in this vast undertaking cannot be exaggerated.
I look forward to your views on Nichola Sturgeon when she decides she wants another independence referendum, bags.
I am sure they will be equally robust.
obieone do you really think the 'best of three' was made up by a GN poster? Or was that a joke?
I read this whole "conversation". I don't know why. It made me cry (again). I don't think I can stay on Gransnet. Almost every day it hurts me.
Another day, another divisive article.
obie I see you would like to see British industry grow again - have you any idea of how that will be achieved.? Already there is doubt about a Tata steel deal now going ahead. We have insufficient people with the necessary skills to teach apprentices- I saw that in some places retired men are now working a couple of days a week to teach their skills to young people. The best engineers are those who do an apprenticeship first and then do a degree.
The investment needed to get any form of industry going again will be enormous so once again we will need to be dependent on foreign funds and then the likely foreign personnel being needed to run the place.
Thanks for the article, bags
Just seen a young man being interviewed at Glastonbury saying his grandmother will probably die soon anyway. (how nice)
I wonder if when she does he'll remember her love, support, MONEY and wisdom?
And we're supposed to be the selfish ones?
I'm not sure why this thread has upset you Nonio. Seems like a perfectly normal conversation.
On a serious note, I do think Labour are letting their supporters down. This is an ideal opportunity for them to display unity, gravitas and leadership, like Nicola Sturgeon and the SNP are doing, but their infighting is leading to the Tories(well, some of them), astonishingly, looking like wise elder statesmen. Credit where credit is due, George Osborne, along with Mark Carney, is a calm voice in all the chaos. Never thought I'd say that in a million years!
