Aibu to put the heating on? Have you put yours on yet? This is the first day I've felt chilly. My wall thermometer says it's 20C inside but this is an old house & my feet & hands are cold. I wanted to hold on longer before switching it on but I don't think I can.

Mine has come on automatically as it's set to switch on for an hour first thing in the morning and then again in the evening if the temperature falls below a certain point.
No point in sitting there feeling cold!

No point in having heating if you don’t put it on when you feel cold!

polnan Fri 25-Sept-20 09:57:46

yes, heating on and off to chase the damp out when raining, now heating on first thing, then off when I warm up!

sazz1 Fri 25-Sept-20 09:59:02

Have put mine on 3 times over the last 2 weeks. Only in the evening for a couple of hours

nipsmum Fri 25-Sept-20 09:59:11

My heating is on. Why do you need permission. If you are cold put it on if you are not cold leave it off.

I love that card, MawB - I’ve used it more than once.

the thermostat temperature is just a number, it does not take into account individual adaptations so 19 when we are adapted, could well be warm enough with a cosy throw

My stove experiment worked very well and it remained slightly warm all night, I left house doors open, no ch. I topped it up this morning and it is just about on, just enough to be warm but not hot. I will top up again this evening and by tomorrow will have an adapted body temperature

My flannelette sheets are quite thin from qvc, northern nights. Not nearly as warm and thick as my real winter bedding. I slept snug last night

I've not got my heating on yet but I definitely feel a little chilly. I still have my summer duvet on as I do tend to get hot at night but my DH has an extra duvet on top of his side of the bed.
We're (hopefully!) about to move into a new flat which is much warmer than our previous 200 year old house and I'm worried that I will be too hot - I feel a few disagreements about thermostats coming up!

leeds22 Fri 25-Sept-20 10:07:55

If you feel chilly, put it on. We've been clicking it on for 1-2 hours most evenings, except when the temperature shot up at the beginning of this week.

Candelle Fri 25-Sept-20 10:09:00

Ours is on too.

Apparently a 'good' temperature for older people is 21 degrees in sitting rooms and 18 in bedrooms.

One family member has an old house with an unreliable boiler. When we babysit we take up extra fleeces and coats, hats and gloves! Their house is being renovated so it will soon be a pleasure to think we don't have to remember to take up additional clothing for future sproglet sitting.

Last week we had temperatures up to high 30s, today it's 10!! Yesterday there was snow 30cm deep.up in the mountains above us. Crazy year. So far have managed not to put any heat on. I am not sure I will be swimming in our unheated oil again this year, usually I keep going to mid October and thought I would reach the end of the month after this summer of very high temperatures.

There are no medals for making your own life miserable. If you're cold put on the heating.

Phloembundle Fri 25-Sept-20 10:14:36

We put ours on this morning for the first time.

Blossoming Fri 25-Sept-20 10:16:17

If the house feels cold then put the heating on.

readsalot Fri 25-Sept-20 10:21:58

If it is hot I open a window, if it is cold I put the heating on. If it is raining I wear a mac, or take the car! I cannot understand why some people feel virtuous in not putting the heating on when it gets chilly, or guilty if they do. Life is too short to be uncomfortable!

Mapleleaf Fri 25-Sept-20 10:25:25

Our heating comes on when it drops cold enough, so this last couple of mornings it came on for a while. Yesterday, it dropped chilly over lunchtime so I put the fire on in the kitchen until I felt warm again.
If you are chilly, use your heating - that’s what it’s for. There’s no point in getting chilled which can lead on to you becoming ill.?

After being on furlough, I am now having to work from home but due to my employer NOT making my furloughed wage up to 100% for the last 6 months I cannot afford to put my heating on, am sitting at my desk fully clothed and with a thermal waistcoat, scarf, wool socks and sheepskin slippers on and a blanket wrapped round my legs I live on my own so have no one to share the bills with and if we are to work from home for the next 6 months, I am in Scotland, I don’t know how I will be able to afford to heat my home during the day as I would normally be in the office.

annsixty Fri 25-Sept-20 10:26:30

Very chilly here in Stockport this morning
I think it will be on ,low, for the foreseeable.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Fri 25-Sept-20 10:29:17

Our heating comes on depending on the thermostat and had come on during the evening once or twice this week. Ditto the heating in our caravan, which actually came on during some nights in July!

annsixty Fri 25-Sept-20 10:29:19

So sorry about that Tish is there a government scheme to help you out.
A lot of people are being helped in some way.
Ask CAB ,or if you are older, Age UK.

I was sitting in the living room enjoying the cool, approx 18°, temperature. DH has come into the room to use the computer and immediately put the portable heater on (we don't have central heating) 15 minutes and I can feel myself getting uncomfortably warm. This is why I spend the winter wearing tee shirts and summer trousers indoors.

midgey Fri 25-Sept-20 10:36:59

Tish, do you have a microwave? A long heated wheat bag is just glorious around your neck!

Craftycat Fri 25-Sept-20 10:38:04

I knew it had got chillier last night when I woke up to find 3 of our 4 cats on the bed! Luckily we don't feel the cold too much so no heating yet but I did find a cardigan.

Mealybug Fri 25-Sept-20 10:41:07

It's been really cold all week here so the heating has only gone on at night, but hubby is bedridden so he feels the cold more. I only put it on through the day if he is cold, I just wear a jumper lol

WOODMOUSE49 Fri 25-Sept-20 10:45:57

We live in a old granite cottage with tiny windows, no wall or floor insulation, very little roof insulation left (squirrels have had it we think), no central heating just range and wood burner. So, I'm in three layers at the moment and have had the fire going for nights now, DH moaned he was too warm last night! Off out soon to do more wood sawing. That will warm me up and build up the supply we get through by the wheelbarrow full.

Fortunately, we've almost finished building our new south facing house with masses of insulation, heat recovery system and big south windows.
