What are you making in the New Year? I'm going to have a stab at making crocheted socks. Wondering what other crafty grans are planning to make this coming new year.

Billybob4491 If you can knit such complicated things then you would find crochet easy! Honestly! I'm in awe of your chef and cake and all... Amazing! I taught myself to crochet - and knit come to that as my mother was most discouraging! I took up crochet because my knitting needles used to jab into people sitting next to me on the bus coming home from school. You could probably work it out without even using a book, to be honest!
Good luck with all your amazing creations!
I'm on a wool and fabric amnesty at the mo while my house is being repaired and there's too much to do à propos of that. Too much mess around and I'm too busy trying to paint what I can within my limitations - disabilities. Missing it though.

I always make all my Christmas cards and, at the moment, I'm working out the design for next Christmas' batch. Well organised? Sometimes!

Stansgran. That quilting in the photo is beautiful! Please could you tell a beginner how to get started?

I'm currently making my own version of a bedcover/day bed throw, because I have to lie down so often now due to pain. I am using a very thin something like 2tog summer duvet that seems to be made of washable paper (!) and am sewing a lovely piece of pretty, (looks like a Liberty print) but inexpensive poly cotton fabric one side and a brightly patterned fleece fabric the other then making a quilted/puffy effect by "Buttoning" it in a diamond pattern with little daisy embroideries - yet to invent these! It will all be washable. The idea came to me because the thin duvet was horrible with a duvet cover as it slid about.

I was lucky to receive two knitting books for Christmas. One is ‘Knitted animal scarves, mitts and socks’ and the other is ‘Knitted pirates, princesses, witches and fairies’
Know which project to dive into first. Plenty of wool in my stash too!

I got a present of a needle felting kit and have been trying it, but looking for interesting ideas. The ones in the book with kit don’t appeal to me much- I’d like to make nice flower brooches. Flowerofthewest is trying it too I think.

Greciangirl Mon 31-Dec-18 16:08:54

Ooh!! You are a clever lot.
I can’t knit, crochet, or quilt or embroider.

Although I did some patchwork cushions way back in the eighties. I don’t seem to have any creative flair anymore.
Patchwork sewn by hand is very fiddly and I just can’t be bothered.
Do you sew by hand, love Beige Cardigans1955?

started a slipover for my DGS who's 4 with wool I've had for ages - just realised that I've got to the armhole shaping and am using a slightly smaller needle (3.25 rather than 3.5) so hope it won't matter!!! Not much of a knitter but it's a simple pattern (I hope grin)

The doll on the right in the front of the picture needs a new cloth body and new lower arms and legs.

She apparently has had a hard life, before I found her in a jumble sale. All her china fingers are missing and her lower legs and feet have been broken and replaced with old plastic, which is now cracking up. The cloth of her body has rotted, so her arms are falling off.

I have a pattern for her new body, but am currently trying to find affordable arms and legs, but will probably have to make them myself.

I'm going to try and finish some quilting projects too. I must finish the quilted balls...nothing like being prepared for next Christmas!

Billybob4491 Mon 31-Dec-18 17:21:06

I have come to the conclusion that there are many talented people here! Thank you for your comments Tilly, I will have another "go" at crocheting, being left handed may be a handicap but nothing ventured nothing gained!

I’ve been kept busy this year with various knitting, crochet, dressmaking requests from my 6 little grandchildren and daughter in laws, from hats, scarves, jumpers, cardis, dressing up outfits, sofa throws, dolls clothes etc. Also made myself a couple of cardis with beautiful yarn I brought back from last visit to son in New York.
I brought back some lovely batik fabric from last visit to son in Malaysia and plan to make sun dresses for 4 little granddaughters. That will prompt me to get to grips with my overlocker which is still in its box after 18 months!
Also made a crochet Christmas wreath for our house this year which has been much admired so will be making them for the family this year.

Trying to learn Tunisian crochet as it looks so neat and even but struggling with holding one long needle in one hand, it makes me feel unbalanced.
Not sure I should rest my hands more or keep going through the minor, but increasing, discomfort of osteoarthritis. 55 years of knitting and piano playing is taking its toll!
Anyone else find that they can only work on the most simplest of patterns at knit and natter? Due to the amount of nattering!

I want to try and get back to my patchwork which I started doing 30 years ago.
It is all blue, and started of as a cot cover, then single bed size now nearly a double. I need to get it in to some sort of shape!
I did 4 picture tapestries which I had framed, sadly cannot manage to do anymore!
I am doing a Calligraphy day course in a February, which I am looking forward to.

Farmor15 Mon 31-Dec-18 17:42:24

grandtante - you might be able to make new arms and legs from papier maché. I have a craft book that I used to make costume dolls long ago - I could root it out and send you relevant bit if interested.

Rosiebee Mon 31-Dec-18 18:09:11

I'm on the last of 4 cross stitch pictures depicting the seasons, middle of crocheting a throw and a bit stuck on quilting a patchwork quilt made for the Linus Project [quilts for babies and children in hospital]. Since I retired about 8 years ago, my dormant "making" gene has gone into overdrive. We now have Christmas patchwork cushions in conservatory, to be replaced tomorrow with other seasonal covers, every chair/sofa/bed has a crocheted or quilted throw and I just love designing and making up my Linus quilts - at least I can give them away. They're small enough to try out different ideas and learn new skills. Have recently challenged myself with a complicated crochet throw and a beautiful but tricky shawl pattern. My hobbies may seem a bit sedate but they sometimes involve a LOT of swearing. blush

Theoddbird Mon 31-Dec-18 18:51:46

I am still working on a 2000 piece hand sewn English patchwork quilt.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Mon 31-Dec-18 19:06:17

Just returned to read the postings of all the extremely talented people on here - most impressed! Love Rosiebee's comment about lots of swearing - I do lots of that! Is that classed as making something, maybe making a nuisance of myself? I've just made something else - a lot of noise on the piano, not necessarily tunefully .....

HootyMcOwlface Mon 31-Dec-18 19:29:06

I need to finish my cross stitch. I started it when I went on maternity leave before I had my son - he will be 25 in a couple of weeks! blush

Grandmama Mon 31-Dec-18 20:22:19

I'm going to go through a huge drawer of fabric lengths, most of very good quality, and get sewing again.

Lisalou Mon 31-Dec-18 21:39:59

Currently working on a crocheted lap throw. I love sewing too, but have so little time and I can crochet in the evening after supper, picking it up and leaving it as often as necessary. Unfortunately sewing projects are more involved, and take too much time.

Phoebes Mon 31-Dec-18 22:39:59

The year we got married, I bought a huge tablecloth in Greece. My husband is Greek and all the ladies in his family did embroidery, so I thought I would embark on a project too. Well, 36 years later I still haven’t finished it! That’s my New Year’s resolution!

Ameliarose Tue 01-Jan-19 01:42:27

Can't wait to see finished quilt.

Marg123 Tue 01-Jan-19 08:43:31

I love knitting but would like to do something different so I’m going to have a go at a Fairisle jumper.

megan123 Tue 01-Jan-19 12:20:16

I am definitely going to look at all the projects I have started, including tapestry, patchwork and knitting, and make a determined effort to finish some at least. I love knitting, but I do struggle with patterns now, not sure if it's my eyes or the fact that I seem to get mixed up!

goldengirl Tue 01-Jan-19 12:38:26

I'm still working on a stocking stitch jumper which is taking me ages. I thought it would be simple but it involves picking up stitches around armholes in order to make the sleeve! I shall persevere but will look for easier knits next time!!! I also finished a scarf which had a 2 row pattern and can't remember the number of times I had to start again!!!! It did look good when I'd finished it though which was a relief.

Witzend Wed 02-Jan-19 18:02:20

What a lot of really lovely things! So many of you are so talented.
I have so much (cheap and cheerful!) yarn in many assorted colours left from my Nativity set, I'm wondering whether to perhaps make another, to offer somewhere next year. A raffle, prize perhaps, or given that Gdd will be at a C of E reception class next September, maybe for a classroom?

I'm hesitating, since obviously it's a lot of work and there wouldn't be much point if nobody would particularly want it.
But I do have the urge to knit again! Not to mention using up a lot of that stash.
