The totally obscene amount of money involved in moving someone who kicks a ball from one team of ball kickers to another?

That amount of money could possibly change the lives of many people in third world countries, provide clean water projects, schools, etc.

I am practically incandescent!

rusheylee Fri 04-Aug-17 10:29:49

The word I use is obscene, which is the strongest word of disgust that I can use on this website I can use.

Also, for the "wages" they get every week, getting being very different from earning

Interestingly it is not uncommon for the non-European players to send money to their homelands to sponsor community projects. Some places in Africa and S America have benefited greatly from their famous sons, of whom they are extraordinarily proud.

Here's a thought re. high salaries on the Beeb and differences between men and women - decrease the hourly rate for men and increase women's to the same level in such a way as to keep the cost the same (or lower, of course!).

gillybob Fri 04-Aug-17 09:59:27

Maybe it's because the BBC pays its "people" from tax payers money.

annodomini Fri 04-Aug-17 09:35:09

Presumably most of the shows on Sky are made by independent production companies. BBC still makes many of its own programmes.

Penstemmon Fri 04-Aug-17 09:24:11

Why is the BBC wage bill exorbitant but not Sky?? If we disagree with super salaries it does not matter who pays them. Public sector is strangled if private force up pay.

suzied Fri 04-Aug-17 02:34:00

Premier League football clubs seem to be owned by foreign oligarchs and the players have little connnection to the area or town they're supposed to represent. It's all a bit nuts.

FarNorth - it is incorrect of you to say "you don't have to pay a TV licence fee if you never watch any BBC programmes..."
TV Licensing authority states "You need to be covered by a TV licence to watch or record live TV programmes on any channel..."
So someone who never watches a BBC programme still has to have a TV licence and pay towards the exorbitant wage bill of the BBC.
That's what I mean by having no choice.

Penstemmon Thu 03-Aug-17 22:09:43

legislation to prevent these exorbitant fees/salaries is possible. But there has never been any political will to pursue it.

I am very happy to pay my licence fee for the BBC..to only have the likes of media owned by big business is a dangerous situation.

I agree that fees/salaries for top salaries need to be significantly reduced..but it does not, in my mind, make it better/worse if the money is paid by private companies or the BBC..botare obscene. If the likes of Sky etc did not pay do highly the BBC would not feel it needed to. We pay one way or the other..the cost of advertising is always passed on to the consumer making the licence fee insignificant!

PamelaJ1 Thu 03-Aug-17 19:32:17

Far north if we all watched the BBC and didn't pay anything for the 'privilege' the Beeb would cease to exist. If that's what you do then I am subsiding you.
I hope you are grateful.

mimiro Thu 03-Aug-17 18:31:14

all sports teams get way to much especially the so called star players
cant pay our soldiers a decent wage but some nit that hits, kicks, bats a ball around gets more than he/she can ever spend in a lifetime...
same with musicians and actors

tickets cost enough to support some familys for a week.

FarNorth Thu 03-Aug-17 18:20:46

"What we don't have a choice about is paying our TV Licence Fee"

You don't have to pay a TV licence fee if you never watch any BBC programmes on standard channels or on catch up.

DH keeps reading it out to every morning over breakfast. It is enough to give me indigestion. It just seems to me the more money involved the more somehow the silly people are revered.

gillybob Thu 03-Aug-17 17:13:42

Just as I said earlier grannysyb there are a few clubs who simply buy their way to the top. The rest are almost just there to make the numbers up. My DS and DGS are season ticket holders at Sunderland which is a very family orientated (recently relagated) club.

grannysyb Thu 03-Aug-17 16:46:47

The sad thing is that all the money seems to be at the top of the game, there are lots of little family orientated clubs who would love just a fraction of what the premier league have. I'm not interested in football but I think the whole system is out of kilter.

dbDB77 Thu 03-Aug-17 15:29:02

I'm not upset or bothered at all - seems no different than actors, directors & producers getting £millions for films - it's all part of the entertainment industry - and footballers' careers are short.
Neymar is transferring from Barcelona to Paris-St-Germain - the transfer fee is actually 222 million Euros so it's not an issue for UK tax authorities.
Barcelona will be making the big profit (I believe they bought him for about £48 million) and Barcelona is owned by its fans not by overseas billionaires.
Everyone has the choice of whether they watch football & thereby contribute to the wage & transfer fee inflation.
What we don't have a choice about is paying our TV Licence Fee - what does annoy me is that the BBC pay ex-footballer Gary Lineker £1.8 million a year from those licence fees - and what's more, he is so greedy as to use tax-avoidance schemes.

gillybob Thu 03-Aug-17 14:42:57

The same as Chris Evans and his BBC cronies are doing with your money GillT57 enjoy spending it.

GillT57 Thu 03-Aug-17 14:35:49

I didn't know that loopyloo, why on earth are they doing that with MY money?

loopyloo Thu 03-Aug-17 14:17:14

And despite all this the government gives millions to the FA each year.

GillT57 Thu 03-Aug-17 14:15:13

I am disgusted by these amounts of money, and even more so by the frequent trials where the players are charged with tax dodging evasion, avoidance, whatever it is. Nobody, but nobody needs that amount of money, and it is repellent how business has taken control of football. The Qatar money ( and Russian) has damaged the London property market and is now ruining football. They know the price of everything and the value of nothing.

gillybob Thu 03-Aug-17 13:23:50

Glad to hear Chris Evans has lost listeners though...

Now that is music to my ears AlieOxon grin

I am just hoping that very soon the international professional football association will cause it's own demise by an almighty financial meltdown

Nelliemoser My dad (who fancies himself as an authority on these matters) is convinced that this will be the case. The sooner the better. The richest clubs simply buy their way to the top and the "also-rans" are often wasting their time even playing.

glammanana Thu 03-Aug-17 11:58:59

Phoenix My hubby would love to take our DGSs to "The Cop" and watch thier beloved Liverpool play but even with discounted rates there is no way he could afford to take them or even just one of them and get change from £80 (approx),According to hubby the best matches are the Sunday League where you just turn up and support your local school/pub team.

Nelliemoser Thu 03-Aug-17 10:59:50

This is disgraceful. I am just hoping that very soon the international professional football association will cause it's own demise by an almighty financial meltdown, be forced to revert to sensible wages and disappear up it's own bckside.
This situation has nothing to do with playing sport it is all about the greed of the super rich.

Stansgran Thu 03-Aug-17 10:41:02

Not trying to derail but Alieoxon have you thought of crowdfunding for the funeral? Might be worth asking an internet savvy teen.
And I totally agree about the silly money. They seem to end up badly too with multiple wives and damaged knees.
