Do you wash cleaning cloths with normal laundry?

I always have. Everything goes in dirty, comes out clean is my thinking. But my daughter's just been round and saw me put a wash on and is apparently horrified. She puts a separate hot wash on for cleaning cloths. Am happy with the way I do it so not planning on changing but still curious as to what others do.

My husband does anything with anything so it is only me that separates into colours. If I can squirrel away the tea towels until I have a load, I do because the normal 40 degree wash is not really enough to take away the smells and stains. My husband is a devil for using the tea towels for anything too so I am particularly squeamish about it.
My daughter made me washable kitchen roll too so they go in with the tea towels.
I don't think it matters if you can get things clean enough how you wash them but I must admit I gagged at the thought of washing stuff in with the cat's bedding. The thought of my tea towels wiping my crockery and being left with cat hairs is just ? to me. I try not to wipe anything with a tea towel much preferring for it to dry naturally after being well rinsed in hot water but once again, DH cannot agree on that one. At the end of the day, I need his help and the price I pay is to accept he does things his way with the exception of glasses!

As wash cloths and tea towels are changed every day I don’t see a problem with outting them in with my normal wash.

Dusters go in with my jeans

Most washing powders contain an amount of bleach (hydrogen peroxide) so will do a fair job of cleaning. We need a bit of immunity anyway!

I use a sponge to wash dishes and wipe down benches and it gets put in the dishwasher with the pans. If not using a sponge I use biodegradable wipes so they get thrown away.
Im not sure why you would need to boil tea towels, surely you only use them to dry clean dishes, or dry wet hands.

PS Would certainly wash cat's bedding separately!

Never wash above 40 degrees. Read an article about using a short blast in the microwave for cleaning clothes after washing and drying but never found it necessary.

collius Sat 19-Sept-20 11:46:38

Jcloths and dish cloths often go in dishwasher also they get bleached.

Jac53 Sat 19-Sept-20 12:12:41

I wash tea towels with towels and bed linen on 60 degree wash. J cloths put in bleach and throw away when they start to tear. Dusters and micro fibre get washed seperately.

I put cleaning cloths in with towels. Usually at 60 degrees , maybe 40 and usually with a laundry disinfectant. I wouldn't put them in with clothes other than maybe an old pair of gardening trousers.

mine go in with the usual wash , the difference being that i use 60 degress temperature

Buttonjugs Sat 19-Sept-20 12:36:48

Wait - people wash wash cloths? confused when mine looks manky I soak it in bleach.

Lulubelle500 Sat 19-Sept-20 12:46:22

I wash everything together unless it is really delicate, then I hand wash it.(My grandmother left me all her beautiful handmade slips and nightdresses. A few years ago as I washed them I put them out to dry then brought them in, wrapped them in linen and laid them away in the drawer under the wardrobe. Life's too short and I'm too old and cold to wear French silk and lace any more!)

I always boil my cloths for half an hour. I told my kids and now my grandkids that i am making ‘dishcloth soup’.

SupaPamgrin that's what I used to say when my kids were little and I used to boil white socks on the hob and that was called Sock stew.

Barrygirl - bamboo disposable cloths are fully degradable and compostable, they degrade in three weeks or less without releasing harmful chemicals.

glammanana Sat 19-Sept-20 13:21:48

My cleaning cloths go into soak with bleach every evening after I have used them to wash down my kitchen doors and appliances then put to dry on patio for next day.

Twig14 Sat 19-Sept-20 13:37:58

No I always wash tea towels n dish cloths together but never ever with other washing

Witzend Sat 19-Sept-20 13:46:13

I don’t use washing up cloths. I use a sponge cloth* for wiping surfaces, it gets a soak in bleach until it’s past saving.
I have lots of tea towels so I wait until there are plenty and do them on their own at 60 deg.

*The other day I ordered a pack of compostable sponge cloths from the milkman, supposed to be machine washable up to 300 times. Seem good so far, but we shall see.

Dishcloths go in with towels and tea towels on a 40 deg wash and bleached when needed. Would never put them in with a clothes wash.

sharon103 Sat 19-Sept-20 13:50:14

I soak dish cloths in boiling water and bleach.

I've just switched to using bamboo dish cloths, Lakeland do one which is a thick, strong "stockinette" type and Amazon have a bamboo waffle fabric. Bamboo is supposed to be anti-bacterial so I wouldn't worry about putting them in with the normal wash.
The cloths are fairly expensive but the reviews say that they wash well.
I'll just have to see which last better without looking tatty.
I might put floor cloths through with a dark wash, but usually I pour boiling water over them.
I don't use cloths to wipe any chopping boards that have had raw meat on them, always use neat washing up liquid and a stiff brush. So my dish cloths are unlikely to be dangerously grubby.

This thread is turning out to be nearly as riveting as the party dress/sparkly balloon arch debate !???

silverlining48 Sat 19-Sept-20 14:42:14

I never wash above 40, sometimes 30, thought that is what we are supposed to do. Washing divided by colour ie whites/darks and everything in together. Tea towels only touch clean dishes so not sure why they need to be hot washed separately.
I hardly ever use bleach.....

lemongrove Sat 19-Sept-20 14:43:47

Juicylucy

Yes dish cloths go in the hot wash with other things like towels etc.

Same here.
I have about four dishcloths so they get changed every few days.
