I'm considering moving. Anywhere in England & Wales is possible. Ideally, I'd like a characterful building, medium to large garden. As many bedrooms as 300k will get me. In a really beautiful area. I'd like streams/rivers/woods. Nothing urban. Maybe half-an-hour drive to a town.. Do you know somewhere that fits the bill?

Just so relaxing reading all these comments . What a great situation in which to find yourself. Solely your choice?

Nannan2 Tue 29-Sept-20 09:59:47

Cotswolds?but maybe more expensive than £300,000?

At 300K. I think the answer is “in your dreams” I’m afraid.

South Shropshire every time!

Sorry i don't mean to be a killjoy but take a read of 'out of your townie mind' I used to have the dream of the roses round the door etc this book shifted my thinking a little, still get pangs for roses round the door though!good luck with your search

Mid Devon always seems underpriced for such a gorgeous area. Everywhere is within half an hour of the coast and there are some lovely towns too. £300,000 would get you something very nice for sure.

Certainly is!

As is Herefordshire/Gloucestershire border country as someone suggested.

There are beautiful locations in less popular areas.

I’m with Panache. Pembrokeshire. Great community spirit. Fabulous rural setting with the best coast ever. Small towns great villages

Manse Cottage in Ottery St Mary (on Rightmove) is a stunner and Ottery is lovely.

MaryTheBookeeper

this is super-cute too but the interior's a nightmare.

Kitchen: 11' x 6' 2"
It sounds claustrophobic!

And, as posters have pointed out, what happens if you are no longer able to drive?

Susieq62 Tue 29-Sept-20 10:10:06

Yes stay away from Northumberland! It’s getting too busy!!

Crazygran Tue 29-Sept-20 10:11:15

We have just bought a caravan in Cardigan Bay .
It’s definitely a hidden gem ?

We have recently moved to Lincolnshire. In the wolds, lovely small villages, larger towns and 20 mins to beautiful remote beaches. Cheap too, lots of land and house for the money. I love it. Good luck in your search.?

Callistemon Tue 29-Sept-20 10:12:15

Where are you now, MaryTheBookkeeper?

If you have family or friends nearby do you really want to uproot too far away?
I suppose it depends on your age, too (you don't have to tell us!).

What a delightful dilemma to have. I believe the house sale websites Zoopla, Rightmove etc., have tools that tell you where you can afford the type of property you want with the resources you have. At least that should help you narrow down the search. Good Luck!

Just seen boolya comment as I was about to type ' come & join us here in rural south Shropshire' !! It really is a wonderful country, incredibly beautiful, lovely villages & lots of wide open spaces for walking & exploring and plenty of ancient Woodlands. The best of it is that it's for the large part unknown to outsiders - I'm always shocked how few people could actually put it on a map. We've had some glorious drives & walks in the county during the summer & hardly seen a soul. Do have a look!

Maybe consider renting first so you don't buy anything on an impulse and find it's not so nice in Summer with all the tourists or in winter with all the winds etc.. I've just come back from a weekend in Padstow which was gorgeous but SO expensive to buy in because of all the second homers. What must it be like in winter when they're all empty properties?? In Northumberland, which is beautiful and where I was in July, they have put a cap on the number of properties able to be sold to second homers for that very reason - it kills a town out of season. On my way home from Cornwall, I spent a couple of nights in East Devon (cheaper than North or South Devon), in the countryside outside Exeter, which was lovely. I live in Kent but my heart is in North Yorkshire. Why not ring up agents in the main towns you might like to be near (eg York or Monmouth or Pembroke or Norwich), tell them what your requirements are and ask them to send you all they've got, then compare value-for money in each area. Alternatively, use something like SisterStay to visit new areas and get first hand knowledge from local residents about where is loveliest to live. Good luck!

We all know how quickly each decade speeds by so the first and safest consideration really does have to be how will you cope with accessibility to facilities etc as you get older. Having no stairs is also a good idea!

I suggest Dorset, the area around Charmouth/Bridport which can be near the sea or further into the country.

NotSpaghetti Tue 29-Sept-20 10:27:43

marpau - if you are going "off track" why not go the whole hog?

If it were me, I'd go as close to Dartmouth in South Devon as I could get. Not sure what you'd get for 300k down there though

Callistemon Tue 29-Sept-20 10:29:15

A shed?

POBCOB Tue 29-Sept-20 10:30:53

Suffolk is great, lovely villages with community spirit, beautiful coastlines such as Southwold, Woodbridge and Aldeburgh. Lots of village locations within 30-40 minutes of Bury St Edmunds which is a great town.

Callistemon Tue 29-Sept-20 10:31:21

And it's very hilly.

Davida1968 Tue 29-Sept-20 10:31:39

Lancashire? Lower house prices (more for your money) and some nice market towns.
