My hair has gone so dry and tangled these last few weeks.
OMG ?

I got Himself to take a photo of the back for me just now so I could see it. It feels so dry and tangly and I wanted to see it up close.

The first picture is from the end of October and the second one, just tonight.

No haircut in between & I can’t get to a hairdresser right now. (same for everybody I know)

What do you think I should do?
I’m thinking apply some products. Like Argon oil ? or coconut oil ? and wrap it in a turban to absorb the conditioner. It shocked me to be honest.

Any suggestions please? I’d be grateful.

I was also going to suggest Olaplex, very expensive in the hair salon but go onto Amazon and get yourself some,my daughter washes her hair, then massages it into her hair, combs it through and wraps in a towel, the longer you can leave it the better, then wash out,she uses number 3

John Frieda FRIZZ ease does what it says on the jar.
Deep conditioner, miraculous recovery.
From the very first time it does wonders to my hair. It's in a purple jar. Try it. You have to leave it on for a few minutes before rinsing. Let me know if it works for you before trying oils and all that. Karen

I change my shampoo and conditioner regularly, usually from Lidl own brand range. I find that a change improves my hair....maybe it gets fed up of the same over and over again!

ReadyMeals Fri 12-Feb-21 13:34:38

It looks ok to me. Put it in a ponytail if it's annoying you.

Nanna29 Fri 12-Feb-21 13:31:50

I changed my shampoo and conditioner as my hair was going a similar way. I've heard not to use coconut oil as its bad for hair. I put a little bit of conditioner on my hair before I brush and im taking a multivitamin also my hair has been much better since

Mirren

Hi , I'm a doctor and I suggest you ask your GP to test you for an underactive thyroid and low iron levels/ anaemia. Both can cause hair loss and dry, brittle hair .

Firstly to EVERYONE on here who has taken the time and trouble to post may I say a heartfelt THANK YOU‼️

I logged on just now and cannot believe the overwhelming (and wonderful) response. GN at its absolute best. You are are so very kind.

Right.
My update as promised.

Mirren thank you. I had full blood count done mid December and my haemoglobin and ferritin stores were normal.

I don’t take any medications or supplements apart from one 5mg felodipine tablet daily (last 20 years) for essential hypertension.

I’ve just been chatting to a lovely GP about other blood test (all good, lifestyle changes recommended) and I mentioned my hair (awful).

She thinks it’s a reflection of poor health since leaving Spain with the nasty virus I’ve had this last 10 weeks. Suggested a rich conditioner after hair washing no more than twice a week. If no improvement in a couple of months she will check my thyroid function. I was happy to go along with that - it seemed fair enough.

She said our hair has 3 cycles of growing shedding and something else. She felt my poor quality of hair just reflected how I’d been since early December.

I hope this is making sense?

Anyhoo - I feel so much more optimistic now & am off down to Sainsbury’s for a couple of the hair products as recommended on here!

I hope to post a photo of my much improved hair in about a month. I don’t expect miracles in less than that time!

Again, thank you. Too numerous to mention individuals so a collective
? ?
to you ALL. x

p.s. thank you too to a poster who contacted me last night a couple of times. You know who you are. I tried p.ming you just now but a message said you are no longer taking p.m’s.
Thank you for your thoughts they were much appreciated.

If you had a virus were you on antibiotics which can cause hair problems. When you've tried everything else, I suggest you Google OLAPLEX. It isn't cheap but works. I have the same problem and I've tried lots of expensive salon recommended products. I've tried just about everything.
It's a treatment group of products which compliment each other.
No.0 stops split ends when combined with No.3 then No.4 and No.5 are shampoo and conditioner. I hope you solve your problem, it's taken me 3 years to find these products which have stopped my hair breaking off and improved its condition.

I agree with everyone who suggests the Aussie products. They’re excellent for dry ‘straw’ hair.

Am another fan of the Aussie products, and after conditioning I use their detangler/ styling spray.
My hair is now similar to yours Urmstongran ( in the ‘good’
Photo) and those products keep it healthy and shiny.
Just to add, I discovered I had a thyroid function problem a few years ago, which needs daily medication, but my hair didn’t suffer ( my eyebrows did!)Do get checked soon.
Having no energy and weight gain are definitely signs.

Found the tangle teaser type brush I mentioned it's the Manta brush. Sorry, can't seem to copy the link. Hope all goes well at the GPs.

This is good

Dillonsgranma Fri 12-Feb-21 12:47:20

I’ve got very fragile hair and I’ve discovered milk shake products. Their leave in conditioner mousse is lovely
I’ve got fair hair so I use the one for blonde or silver hair

BusterTank Fri 12-Feb-21 12:41:30

First of all change your shampoo and conditioner and buy a buy a leave in spray conditioner . Wash and conditioner your hair as usual then spray the leave in conditioner and comb through . You will notice the difference in a couple of uses .

Scottydog6857 Fri 12-Feb-21 12:40:46

There are lots of excellent treatments out there for dry, out-of-condition hair! However, if this has happened only recently, have you considered that there could be an underlying health issue which could be causing your problems!
Something similar happened to me a couple of years ago. My hair became very dry and tangled, just like yours, and it also became finer in texture. I wasn't feeling particularly healthy either - nothing specific - but I just felt a bit "under the weather".? When I visited my hairdresser, I mentioned it to her and she said that in ladies of my age (nearly 64 now) one of the commonest causes of loss of hair condition was an underactive thyroid! As I had postpartum thyroid disease after having my daughter in 1991, I have to admit, it certainly was a possibility!
I spoke to my GP about it and mentioned about my nonspecific symptoms! She did not take on board a single thing I said! ?. I didn't force the issue, but over time, things got worse! I worked as an Advanced Nurse Practitioner in general practice for many years before I retired and had a nursing career spanning over 30 years. I was also used to patients feeling they weren't being taken seriously by their GPs!
So, using my judgement and clinical knowledge, I arranged to have a series of blood tests carried out privately! Imagine how shocked I was to discover that my thyroid was severely underactive, and in addition my Vitamin B12 levels were also severely low - the latter was caused by medication prescribed by my GP to control the symptoms of acid reflux, as I have a hiatus hernia!?
I went back to my GP with the private blood test results and was immediately started on treatment! I also got an apology! I don't feel 100% yet, but I am much better, and my hair condition has improved too!? Good luck!

Just a thought, could it be the difference in the water between Spain and the UK?

Blossoming Fri 12-Feb-21 12:38:00

I don’t know if you are on any meds or have underlying conditions, but please don’t start taking handfuls of supplements until you’ve had some blood tests. You risk masking any deficiencies that may need addressing. I have an underactive thyroid and a daily thyroxine pill takes care of that. Paradoxically, my hair is in really great condition since I have been unable to get to a hairdresser for a year. I’m not blow drying it, washing it twice a week just using shampoo and conditioner, and letting the grey grow!

icanhandthemback Fri 12-Feb-21 12:37:06

Definitely get a thyroid check. It can play havoc with your health. My poor DIL only knows when hers is out of whack when she starts passing out. The last time she came too at the bottom of the stairs with her ASD son saying, "Mummy, ok?" over and over. She was distraught. I only tell you so that you can see how dangerous it is to leave it untreated.
If not, it looks like you need a good look at any medication and match it with any vitamin problems they can cause. I had an awful time with my nails and hair due to Metformin but take a supplement now. They are gradually improving.

Gelisajams Fri 12-Feb-21 12:31:22

When I was a teenager (many moons ago) I worked as shampoo girl for a hairdresser. She always recommended the B vitamins for healthy hair and nails. Do get a medical check up though. ?

Hi I had this problem last year.My hair was breaking & falling out.
I taje Biotin tablets from H&B & get the whole Olaplex range from my Hairdresser though you can buy online.No3 is a rebonder treatment .Leave it on for 2hrs.Twice a week.No Sulphates or Parabens.Wash & condition with No4 &5.
Dot of some No6 on tips & Dot of No7.Pat dry when wet.Dry on Cool Setting.Use Amtik Magician detangler & detangler brush.2 trims & Mine is back to Lovely shine again.Hope that helps. You can buy 4 trial products for £20 online. You only need tiny amounts.

NannaGrandad Fri 12-Feb-21 12:28:49

A quick home treatment is mayonnaise. Coat your hair in it, comb through, wrap in cling film then a warm towel on top.
Leave for a couple of hours then wash and condition as usual.
A silk pillowcase also helps.
Try to get a check up at the doctors just in case there’s a health problem.
Hope you get sorted.

grandtanteJE65 Fri 12-Feb-21 12:26:54

Next time you wash your hair, try using a little less shampoo than you usually do. When you have rinsed it out again, apply two egg yolks that you have beaten lightly instead of a conditioner and leave them for a couple of minutes before rinsing them out again.

If you have camomile tea in the house, make a mugful of it before washing your hair and strain it through a cloth or paper coffee filter before rinsing your hair with it. You don't want bits of the flowers in your hair.

Don't brush your hair until it is quite dry and please do not use a hair-dryer.

I find this helps, although in the hard frost we have at the moment your hair is bound to react by becoming brittle or tangling.

grannyscott Fri 12-Feb-21 12:25:03

There are those who swear by sleeping on a pure silk pillow. John Lewis sell them.

Peewitt52 Fri 12-Feb-21 12:21:11

5together Fri 12-Feb-21 12:11:41

I’m another big supporter of Aussie 3 minute miracle conditioner, especially at this time of year when central heating and rain and icy winds all play havoc. My son also bought me a bottle of L’Oreal Elvive’s Extraordinary Oil last year. It’s a dry oil, so doesn’t make your hair greasy, you only need a tiny amount and it can be used on wet or dry hair, either to condition or to protect when styling or just to add shine.

My hair has hardly grown since it was last cut in July. It is also getting thinner and lighter at the back but I put this down to being on hormone blockers following cancer.

That should say luggy
