Hello
I was just wondering if anyone can tell me about living in Louth or Boston? I have 2 properties to view and I think both are lovely, however reading some peoples comments on these areas I’m a little worried.

JaneJudge Fri 20-Aug-21 18:58:43

Louth has a cheese shop smile

Grannyben Fri 20-Aug-21 18:59:38

I've lived in Lincolnshire all my life, not too far from Louth. It really is a lovely little market town and a perfect place to live.
One word of advice, please check the Environment Agency to see if the property is in a flood area. Parts of Louth have flooded more than once.

Lenny Fri 20-Aug-21 19:09:43

Well I love cheese so that’s good and I will definitely check the flooding as I hadn’t even thought of that.My husband will still be working in London a couple of days and staying overnight so I’m a a little bit anxious about the move, hopefully my dogs will make up for it and there’s some nice walks

Check the crime rate. I’ve heard Boston has a high crime rate.

Lenny Fri 20-Aug-21 20:06:18

Yes that was my worry about the crime in Boston

My parents lived in Sutton on sea which is just north of Skeggie and liked it. It is not a commercial place or very touristy so avoids the crowds of skeggie and mablethorpe. But I live near Heathrow and the journey by road took 4 hours and the train journey was horrible with 2 changes and also took a long time. It took 2 hours from reaching the Lincolnshire border. How would your husband manage with the travelling? Boston has problems with immigrants ( don’t mean to be rude) e.g illegal vodka still blew up, and I understand it’s a very much them and us situation. My dad had a heart attack and was in Louth hospital within half an hour, great care given. However the Pilgrim hospital in Boston did not have a great reputation when it treated my mother in law. Don’t forget there are very long distances between areas and chain stores are only in large towns. I suppose it really depends what you are used to. The weather is also quite extreme at times, they do say the lincolnshire wind is lazy ie it goes through you instead of round you. Happy to pm if you want any further information.

I live near Louth, a beautiful market town, butchers shops, the cheese shop of course, and other independant shops, and cafes, hospital, plenty of supermarkets. Soon out on the Wolds, lovely villages around, not far from a beach at Cleethorpes, the second best in the UK, based on a number of factors. Would choose Louth over Boston any day. Very good garden centre too.

We moved from Lancashire to Boston in 1977, after visiting relatives and loving the area. However, it is very much changed nowadays. Not as many fields now, they`re rapidly being built on, and it`s almost a ghost town regarding shops. Every tme a shop closes down it either gets muckier and muckier or re-opens as a charity or phone shop. There are some immigrant problems, but all the E European people I`ve met have been very nice and "normal".
Having said all that, I wouldn`t go back to Heywood, where we moved from.

Thank you so much for your help, think I’m going to avoid Boston and concentrate my search around the wolds area and maybe towards Nottinghamshire

I moved back to Lincolnshire after nearly 50 years on the London fringes and am so glad to be here, just outside Lincoln.
Louth is lovely but, as your husband will still be travelling back and forth, bear in mind that it doesn't have a railway station and, once you get North of Lincoln, the road journey can be a bit grim when it's busy, icy or snowing!
I'd be more inclined to look at Lincoln which now has a pretty good direct train service to Kings Cross. The road journey is better than years ago, too via the A46/A1. We used to average around 3 hours from Redbridge, including a pit stop at Peterborough services, when we were in the throes of our move.
There are some pleasant and leafy suburbs of Lincoln and close-by villages so worth expanding your search.
I hope it all works out well for you

Southwell too near Nottingham for you? I like it lots. Gainsborough? And Grantham would be perfect for the A1.

I used to visit Louth quite often. The journey north was a pain, but it's a pleasant town, and not so far from the sea. I would guess your money goes a lot further when buying in Louth than several of the places mentioned.

We had friends who ran the post office in North Scarle years ago. What a lovely peaceful area it was so very quiet and an ideal location to live. We went to the village hall for a tea party with our friends it was like being in another world.

I’ve lived in Boston for most of my life (a short period away in my teens/twenties). Like Hellogirl said it’s becoming a bit of a ghost town regarding shops. There is a large immigrant population but most are friendly and polite and seem to be based in certain areas of the town, The outer villages on the outskirts are lovely and provide a good alternative to living in town itself. There is a railway station with links to London and you’re about 40 minutes away from Peterborough and the A1 link by car. It suits me, but lots of my family are still living in the area so that makes it convenient.

Just a further thought, if your husband is travelling up and down to London, have you considered Lincoln or Cleethorpes? I appreciate Louth is a lovely little market town but, Lincoln is really lovely (not like a city at all) and it does have a direct train line to London. It also has some lovely shops, Waitrose and independent etc.
Cleethorpes has a train to London (change at Doncaster) and your usual range of shops plus, the most beautiful beach and seafront for waking your dog.

Grannyben Sat 21-Aug-21 10:43:35

The dog might even like to walk when he's awake!

Hellogirl1 Sat 21-Aug-21 12:02:32

Cleethorpes is actually a very good suggestion.

luluaugust Sat 21-Aug-21 12:17:12

Yes know Louth well and love it, specially Lakings! but as has been said no train service you will be reliant on the car. Lincoln obviously has more facilities but the two aren't really comparable and Cleethorpes great but very different to Louth. How about a short break in Louth to get your bearings.

Lenny Sat 21-Aug-21 12:53:43

So difficult to decide, ideally would like to be anywhere around a 2/3.5 hour drive of Barking East London. My husband won’t have to worry about travelling as he will be staying over 2 nights a week.Getting a bit worried now as we’ve sold and I’ve not even settled on an area I like ?? thank you for all your help,I’m now on rightmove again checking them all out

Cabbie21 Sat 21-Aug-21 13:05:31

Could you rent for six months to get a feel for the place before committing to buying?
I think Louth is a pleasant town, but always seems remote to me. I live near the A46/ A1 but beyond that, roads are slower.

Lenny Sat 21-Aug-21 13:05:32

Just like to add that the journey time is for me getting to come back and see my family in Colchester North Essex as that is where we live now

Lenny Sat 21-Aug-21 13:08:36

Yes I think renting might be my best option as so many people have mentioned the roads being a problem

seacliff Sat 21-Aug-21 13:15:08

Have you considered North Suffolk? Quite rural, with attractive coastal towns. Takes about 2 hours driving to London. Prices vary, maybe more expensive than Lincolnshire

Peasblossom Sat 21-Aug-21 13:26:42

Oh well, no need to go as far as Boston then.

Stamford. Doesn’t come better than that.

Straight onto the A1, A14, M11.

And you’re there.
