We had bath taken out and a lovely walk in shower installed.
I tend to shower and wash hair every other day.
Although I like feeling fresh and doing hair I’m beginning to find the whole thing a right performance especially cleaning down the screen and floors afterwards.
Sometimes DH goes in after me so he does it then.

Goodness. I have a daily shower and never have to wipe down the (tiled) walls or curtain. Guesstimate every six months or so the white base looks a bit grubby and I do a kneel job with the help of a brillo pad. Takes all of five minutes. The thought of a daily cleaning session makes me cringe.

halfpint1 Tue 21-Sept-21 14:13:19

The thought of all those nasty chemicals in all those sprays to clean the shower afterwards makes me shriek.

Every other day I shower and we have a karcher which is brillient

You can tell when shopping in a supermarket who has had a shower and who have not bothered by the BO smell.

Very dry hair and skin, so a complete no no to shower/bathe every day. Twice a week for me and I wash my thick bushy hair only once a fortnight - keeps the natural oils and turns the haystack into manageable hair. My adult sons, who inherited my hair never use soap or shampoo, just water - works wonders!

As a primitive who doesn’t have a shower installed, I bath about five times a week, more often if I need it! I like to sit down in a bath as I am very lazy! My bath takes less than ten minutes as I just wash thoroughly and get out to briskly dry on a nice scratchy towel! I couldn’t possibly soak as I get easily bored. A shower would probably be more convenient but more mess, more expense to get one fitted and hey! I said I was lazy! But not too lazy to clean the bath properly every time as I do like a sparkling bathroom, it’s very cheering somehow.

When I read or hear the expressions ‘stand up wash’ or ‘good wash down’ it makes me squirm. For some reason it’s much more visual (TMI) than ‘taking a shower’ or ‘having a bath’. ??

Very interesting post and stream of replies - so much taken for granted in this - I know someone who calls herself an 'eco-warrior' - she doesn't do this, doesn't buy that, doesn't use the other - the list is endless - however, what she does do is to shower and wash her hair every morning, and shower before going to bed in the evening, taking for granted completely the idea that the world has enough water to sustain this (for everyone), and forgetting totally that her organic shower cream and hair shampoo have arrived in a plastic container, and quite possibly travelled several airmiles, and that her need to wash down the shower screen takes up yet more of the world's precious resources and puts yet more soapy substance in the food chain, and that her greater need to wash towels gobbles up even more water and user-friendly detergent. Come on gransnetters - there's no reason on this earth to shower, bathe or wash your hair on a daily basis unless you have a medical condition - this is just conspicuous consumption in another form. Sorry to be such a dampener but I have seen people struggling for water and it really doesn't take a daily shower to keep your orifices clean and fresh.

Showershine deffo and proper shower clean about once a month

Kate54 Tue 21-Sept-21 15:30:04

Hate showers - quick bath every morning for me. OH uses and cleans with squeegee. In this (fascinating!) debate, the shower crew never mentions that, whatever the temperature in the bathroom, it’s always horribly cold when you emerge from the shower.
Particularly hate the ‘fixed’ ones because you can’t get to those tricky bits. And please don’t suggest a flannel! Ugh.

Sometimes medical problems get in the way. Restricted movement, continence issues and pain impinge on many people’s lives. Thank goodness there are people like you who can point out my faults and set me on the straight and narrow.

Come on GA, we GNs don't need your lecture.

MissAdventure Tue 21-Sept-21 16:15:04

I bath when I want to.
It's not ne necessary to smell of fresias or like a coconut to be clean.
It's also a bit daft to wash away our natural oils and then spend a fortune trying to find chemicals to replace them.

AlisonKF Tue 21-Sept-21 16:57:16

There is far too much showering compared to only a couple of generations ago. I haven't had a bath for years as my arthritis makes it impossible to get out of one! Washing your hair daily, is overdoing it and harms the hair. Saving water may become a necessity in large parts of the world as climate change proceeds. Daily or twice daily showering is a habit whivh probably came from America, where pampered people living in dry, desrt zones may have a rude awakening.

Cabbie21 Tue 21-Sept-21 17:01:52

I agree that for many ( retired?) people, a daily shower is a choice, not a necessity. I agree that water is a scarce commodity.
I have always hated showers since school showers after PE, and not having one in the house for half my life, I have not got into the habit. I sometimes need to use one when we are away and I struggle with unfamiliar controls without my glasses.
I enjoy a bath, but never for a long soak. It takes me longer to get dry than to be in the bath. We have recently had grab rails fitted and that is a great help.
I used to wash my hair every day, but gave up during lockdown as it grew longer, and though it is short again, I still only wash it about twice or three times a week.

Barmeyoldbat Tue 21-Sept-21 17:05:17

Bigirl57 I do don’t shower everyday and I can assure you I don’t have BO. As my skin has got dryer with age I tend to shower maybe twice a week, sometimes more if I feel the need and my hair once a week.

If I have absolutely no choice and have to shower I can’t wash my feet properly and feel frozen getting out of the steamy cubicle into the what feels like a fridge, brrr.

I can’t use glasses as they steam up so can’t see what is on the labels; have washed my hair in conditioner and my body in shampoo more than once.

Things get dropped, I have to bend down to pick up and water goes into my eyes, and wets my hair ( if I wasn’t planning to wash it). Then it goes frizzy in the steam...

I love my bath it’s so relaxing, but worry when the time comes that I can’t get out of it and visualise the embarrassment of being hauled out (by crane probably)by dh and neighbours or worse, firemen.
It doesn’t bare ( bear) thinking about. shock

You could perhaps look at getting either one if those baths with a door so you don’t have to climb out or one of those with a seat that rises up. Don’t know how expensive they are.
Like you I prefer a bath but conscious of water use I do shower about half the time. I find it difficult to breathe in an enclosed steamy shower and also find the standing up a pain. Has anyone tried a shower stool?

Lucca Tue 21-Sept-21 17:34:03

Couldn’t bear not to shower or bath every day at least once, sorry. I’m not fussed about doing a clean up job of the shower that often though !

Brocky Tue 21-Sept-21 17:44:50

My husband and I shower daily. We are fortunate that we have a bathroom with a bath and over it a shower, also an en-suite room with shower cubicle. This has a seat and grab rails inside. We count ourselves lucky and thankful that we are able to have both bathroom and en-suite.

Lilyflower Tue 21-Sept-21 17:45:15

A window squeegee is the business with shower glass.

hollysteers Tue 21-Sept-21 17:50:10

silverlining try a shower cap, it will stop your hair getting wet when you shower.

halfpint1 Tue 21-Sept-21 17:54:34

Yes I use a squeegee and a vinegar spray which I make myself
and Golden Age I totally agree with you;
People use so many chemicals on themselves and with cleaning products and don't seem to line up the dots with being ill.
I would prefer to have the dreaded B.O. than use most beauty
products and as for having a bath, yuck!

MayBeMaw Tue 21-Sept-21 18:09:53

My mum used to refer to a “stand up wash” as a “lick and a promise”
How she could get stand on one leg her feet into the sink was an image I would rather forget.

mrsgreenfingers56 Tue 21-Sept-21 18:24:20

A very quick shower every day and to the people who ask why do you shower every day my answer would be we all sweat and have to go to the loo! Often put the plug in the bath as shower over bath like most and not even an inch of water.

Must try this Method shower spray as do hate cleaning the shower screen.

CBBL Tue 21-Sept-21 18:31:48

I shower daily, wash my hair a couple of times a week.
I clean the shower screens before leaving the shower with a nanofibre cloth. Lift the shower safety mat up (to dry), after I have dried myself, and spray the shower tray with flash bathroom! Wipe the shower tray by hand once a week, and wash the shower safety mat once a month in the washing machine!
