I gave my nine-year-old grandson a reconditioned iPad for Christmas I also put some games on it for him and did it with my card had a huge discussion about it and the fact that he had better not do anything with my card because I would know and he would be in such trouble. Anyway today I had a text from my bank about unusual activity on my card went to have a look, oh my God I couldn’t believe it, two lots of £34.90,no make that three and several others including one for £89 something. ?‍♀️?‍♀️?‍♀️ I rang the bank and it’s not actually fraudulent but they are going to try and get me my money back they did explain that sometimes these kids get into these games and don’t know they’re racking up a big amount of money till the end of the game. I am annoyed with my grandson but I’m bloody furious with myself, anyway I’ve got to ring the disputes people at my bank tomorrow. I have not seen Oscar yet and when I do I will not rip into him but I will explain how disappointed I am and that I will never buy him anything for his iPad again..

Hithere

Please please please do not talk to your gs. Please!

Of course I’m going to speak to him about it and explain what has happened probably through not a fault of his own but I need to show him and hopefully he will learn from it as will I

The bank refunded me, shinamae.
The games person strung me along for every spare minute I had, explaining over and again the problem, then after about 3 weeks told me they wouldn't refund.

When my 9 yr old grandson ran up a bill of over £200 for my son he was in trouble. He knew he shouldn’t have done it. He’s 9 not 3. All these excuses - one minute children should be treated as grown ups and have their views heard etc, the next they aren’t responsible for their bad behaviour. I’d be cross if my grandson did that to me but I wouldn’t have my card details on there tbh.

You think listening to a child's opinions and voice is the same as giving them an item thy poses a danger to them?

If you search the product you have and add something like "parental controls"
How to make an iPad child safe etc you should be able to read articles or watch YouTube videos. Also make sure no game has any chat function etc

MissAdventure Fri 31-Dec-21 00:08:12

My grandson spends more time chatting than playing.

I’m initially speaking to the bank tomorrow and they will advise me from there….

That's good.
I didn't think I would be refunded, but my bank were very good and knew what had happened, as soon as I started to tell them.

No judging from me, Shinamae. You’ve made a mistake, which you’ve acknowledged. None of us is perfect.

Don’t be hard on yourself. We’re not all familiar with the way things are paid for during games, and that applies to adults as well as children. I have occasionally played a game with my grandsons on my phone (before I’m jumped on as well, it was with the full knowledge and consent of their parents) and have seen how easy it would be to click on something that you’re immediately charged for.

I think I can say with certainty that if I or anyone else had been kind enough to buy an iPad for any of my DGS, their parents would have seen it as their responsibility to check that all the necessary controls were in place. They’d be annoyed with themselves in these circumstance, certainly not with the donor.

I hope you can get your money back.

MissA and MMB……..thank you ????

mumofmadboys Fri 31-Dec-21 10:01:14

Have you cancelled that card with your bank Shinmae?

Bibbity Fri 31-Dec-21 10:21:59

OP does not need to cancel the card. It has not been stolen or compromised.

BlueBelle Fri 31-Dec-21 10:25:02

Don’t be hard on yourself Shinamae when my grandson was about 12 he totally unknowing built up a debt for his mum it is so easy to just go for a game your mates are on and without realising it it’s bought He built up a fair debt before my daughter realised it’s a good while ago now but I think the bank did help her if I remember rightly I should add she is very astute as is he about money which shows just how simple it is one click without even realising

MerylStreep Fri 31-Dec-21 10:27:47

I did the same thing many years ago when I wasn’t as tech savvy as I am now.
I got onto Google and explained the situation and they refunded my money.

It may be easier to cancel the card than delete card details from the device

Granniesunite Fri 31-Dec-21 10:32:07

Shinmae. Glad it’s all sorted. We’ve all of us - well nearly all of us ? had some sort of disaster with our children or grandchildren.

His parents now will have a good look at parental controls and adjust accordingly I expect. Lucky grandson getting such a very generous Christmas present. Happy New Year to you.

Sorry do you mean cancel the card with the bank? And receive a replacement?

MissAdventure Fri 31-Dec-21 10:37:31

Does it matter??
The bank are dealing with it.

Smileless2012 Fri 31-Dec-21 10:38:31

You're by no means the only one caught out like this Shinmae. It was covered this year on 'Rip off Britain', two father's whose daughters ran up £100's buying one thing after another as they proceeded through the games they were playing.

It's too easily done. I hope you get refunded. IMO it's something the gaming companies need to be making a lot more clearer but I guess they're only interested in lining their pockets.

JaneJudge Fri 31-Dec-21 10:40:56

We had a similar thing happen where my youngest thought he was winning tokens on some game I forget, he'd spent hundreds! I think we did get some money back but I have forgotten how blush

tiredoldwoman Fri 31-Dec-21 10:42:49

He's just a wee boy , say nothing just correct the card . My daughter did this to me when I was ill but she's 30 years older ! Thank goodness your bank stepped in .

Calistemon Fri 31-Dec-21 10:46:16

Best to always delete your card details, Shinamae; any orders you made will have gone through.
Online stores eg Amazon are often hacked, even National Express was hacked and I had to change my credit card!

I don't suppose your DGS realised that some games had to be paid for or just got carried away. It's all very enticing so best to put parental controls with a pin number in place.

Peasblossom Fri 31-Dec-21 10:47:11

Of course you talk to him.

Hell probably say, I didn’t know. Just like you didn’t know till it happened.

It’s called learning from experience.

Quite valuable actually. I got it wrong. I won’t do that again. But hey here we still all are. ? That’s life.

Have you cancelled that card with your bank Shinmae?

Yes, the card was cancelled yesterday. ?

Shinamae Fri 31-Dec-21 13:15:40

Thanks for your helpful comments, some very nice helpful people on here, some others not so much!
My bank have said they can do nothing about it but was on the phone to Apple for about 20 minutes and from what they’re saying they will reimburse me. I will speak to my grandson and I’m quite sure thinking about it that he had no idea what sort of debt he was building up and think he will be horrified when he realises but it is much more my fault and his… again many thanks to the some very nice people on here…???

Bibbity Fri 31-Dec-21 13:16:18

You didn't need to cancel your card with your bank! Just remove it From the device.
