Are You a Lady? ?

Hello!
(No, don’t worry, it’s not about toilets.)

What do you think about being called a lady?

I’ve found myself using the plural on a few occasions on here;
and I always slightly feel as if I should apologise, or ask permission.
In fact, in the past, I have done the latter.

As a young 80’s feminist, I used to really dislike the word; and I would berate my poor mother for using the word (what a flipping sanctimonious child I was!)

But now, I don’t mind lady at all, in fact I like it. Perhaps we should reclaim it…

So what do you think? Yay or nay?
(Now would be a fantastic time for the Mumsnet voting buttons - forget a like button, we need those bad boys)

Thank you smilebrew

Yes I’m a woman lady naturally born ?? not born.

Silvertwigs Thu 02-Jun-22 13:39:02

I like being a lady or woman and I’m making headway into reclaiming Spinsterhood.

Gwenisgreat1 Thu 02-Jun-22 13:40:18

I don't mind what I'm called as long as it's polite and a feminine description!

StarDreamer Thu 02-Jun-22 13:44:57

Can you say why please?

Don’t mind being called a Lady, what I despise is being called “Madam” !!!!!
Makes me cringe ?

Can you say why please?

I had not quoted before, I had not realised that the discussion had received further posts.

I don’t mind, better than being called an old chook at least.

Couldn't care less what I am called most of the time but if I really didn't like how I was addressed I think I would have to say. Or would I? Am I too much of a lady?

Glenco Thu 02-Jun-22 14:02:25

A group of women would surely not be addressed in an email/letter as, "Dear women," would they? Surely "Dear ladies" would be preferable. I am in a group of over 70 ladies and a certain person with whom we have to interact insists on addressing us as, "Girls." We hate it, it seems so condescending.

BlueSapphire Thu 02-Jun-22 14:09:13

Don't mind; I answer to both!

I’m a woman, but I’m not offended by being referred to as a lady, or a guy for that matter.

I think that I dislike the word ‘guys’ so much as it’s heard so much in schools (by teachers to kids)
It’s especially loathsome when used with primary children.
It used to drive me potty, actually!

I worked in a secondary school and when addressing a class often used the term 'guys' as it is less condescending than 'boys and girls', though if they were behaving particularly badly I might call them 'children' in a sarcastic tone! Alternatively I called them, for example, year 9'.
When I worked in an all girls school we used either 'girls' or 'ladies'.
I see no problem with having a 'girls night out' with friends, while a 'ladies night' sounds odd to me.

All ladies are women, but not all women are ladies?

I’m not a lady.
I’m a right Madam.

Interesting to read views on this. “Lady” seems ok to most, “old lady” not so good!
Just remembered something funny when we were abroad …… a Vietnam guide was welcoming us onto the coach before the days tour - He said “good morning lady” to me, then to the woman behind me “ good morning old lady “.
It was very funny at the time as he was trying so hard to be polite and welcoming. I didn’t dare look at her though as she was about the same age as me.

The latest Consultant's letter says I am a "delightful" lady, I wonder what that really means grin

I wonder if it means that if it does not say 'pleasant' that that is a way to indicate the opposite of a patient about whom it is not written without actually writing 'unpleasant' about that person.

I hate the word lady. I especially dislike it when I’m with my friends and we get called ladies. For example, are you having a good day ladies?’ I know this is a bit irrational.

Lizzie44 Thu 02-Jun-22 16:23:29

Don't mind the term woman or lady. The trouble these days is that it's invariably prefaced by "elderly". At least now the "elderly, vulnerable" term has tailed off a bit after a couple of years of "Covid" speak. DH and I were so often referred to as elderly vulnerable that we adopted it for our team name when Zoom quizzing with the family. Team Evil (Elderly Vulnerable In Lockdown).

Annaram1 Thu 02-Jun-22 16:26:40

Suzie, I have been to Vietnam and found that everyone there is very interested in other peoples ages. That guide would not have thought he was being rude.
By the way, I am a lady and always mindful of how I behave in public.

Farzanah Thu 02-Jun-22 16:49:52

I don’t like the term lady/ladies when used in patronising terms, often by an older man to a group of women.
I thinks just occasionally it’s an appropriate form of address, but not often these days. Don’t mind “guys” addressed to either sex.
For some reason when I was a midwife women patients were always described as “ladies”. Really grated on me.

Germanshepherdsmum Thu 02-Jun-22 16:52:20

I don’t mind being called a lady. In some contexts ‘woman’ sounds rude. I love being called ‘ma'am’ by Americans. So polite.

Bijou Thu 02-Jun-22 16:57:13

I am a woman who likes to be a lady.

I wouldn’t like to hear my hairdresser say to her Junior
“ would you shampoo my woman, please”. Lady is fine.
Sadly I am no longer a girl,

My hairdresser uses the word 'client' ... cover it all!

GrammarGrandma Thu 02-Jun-22 17:40:21

I really don't like "lady." I am a woman. I think it's faux politeness.

rafichagran Thu 02-Jun-22 20:02:38

I dont mind lady, woman or guys.
