Have you got Just3words on your phone or a green bottle in the fridge?

If you have then have you ever needed them?
I went along to an evening to brush up on my CPR Defibrillator skill last night. The Air Ambulance volunteer mentioned both of the above.
I’m definitely going to list details of my blood group and medical history and pop it in the fridge but not so sure about the app. Part of me thinks why not ? Part of me is reluctant to put anything else on my phone that knows where I am.

I hadn’t heard of the Just3words app until a few months ago when I had reason to phone the non urgent police number while out on a solo walk in a fairly remote location to report something of concern. It was tricky to describe my location. The police officer recommended downloading the app for future use and explained that when activated the emergency services can locate your precise location within metres. He suggested it was an invaluable safety feature that we should all have on our phones.

But there is asticker to put on the back of the main door explaining that there is a Message in a Bottle in tge fridge.

Franbern, a paper list on a notice board could bet burnt in the case of a house fire. As could hospital bags.

I would think up-to-date medical information can be accessed immediately from your medical records. The thing in the fridge may not be up to date.

It stores more than just medical records. Next of Kin, contact details, allergies etc are recorded.

You would think that medical records could be accessed centrally but my brother went for an MRI scan recently and the technician wouldn't do it because he couldn't find out what sort of valve had been put in his heart. In the same hospital and only a few months previously.

Thank you for the explanation.
I've got a green bottle in my fridge - half full of some champagne we opened at Christmas, too expensive the throw away but not enjoyable enough to finish. smile

Sadly in the last year of my mother's life, there was a large yellow notice put up inside a kitchen cupboard advising that she has signed a DNR.... do not resuscitate.

I donated my mother's spectacles after her death to Specsavers who were collecting on behalf of Lions

What three words was developed by three young men, one of whom lives in what I will always call my home.

In our area, it's the local Rotary Club which does that.

I have what3words on my phone, after attending a Biker Down course a few years ago, as we were told the emergency services use this to find locations they need to get to. Thankfully I have not had to use it but will keep it on my phone.
I have never heard of the green bottle scheme though.

Never heard of them here either. Here is a town of good size in Fife.

We used the ambulance service last weekend and as our house doesn’t have a number, just a name. What3words came in very useful

dogsmother Mon 24-Apr-23 13:37:05

Raksha you must be so very proud, it’s amazing 🤩

I’ve just ordered 20 from the Lions, you have to pay postage (£5 for 20) but the bottles are free.
I seem to have morphed into the village supplier!
Unlike a poster up thread I don’t always know where my phone is. It seems to be related to my keys and has learnt how to hide. I wouldn’t expect an emergency crew to start rummaging through my coats on the rack or finding my handbag in the cupboard.
I don’t actually take any medication so they can give me anything- but how would they know that ? Even if I was conscious I may not be very communicative.

kittylester Mon 24-Apr-23 14:02:53

Brilliant, Pamela. My feeling is that it's better if all bases are covered.

I have what3words but I haven't needed to use it, and I don't have a green bottle.

I do have an app on my phone with medical information it as advised by my doctor since my transplant.

Last year we were being driven by SIL and BIL when the clutch went on their car. They rang the recovery services but although they could name the area they were not at all sure about the exact location. I had 3 words on my phone. So I gave them the 3 very disconnected odd words and the location was spot on. It was brilliant.

I have had the bottle sitting on my worktop waiting to be filled in and refrigerated for some time - must get round to it!
What 3 words is very useful is finding my way to the start of some of the u3a walks..........perhaps I should bag the parking spot with it!

While on this subject, some of you might be interested in this form for placing in the old tax disc holder of your car. I am a belt and braces kind of woman, so use one despite always carrying my phone. I do not live in Aberdeenshire, but think they are recognised elsewhere.

My mum had a green tub in her fridge for emergencies years ago. Must be about 18 years ago? It did come in useful when she was suddenly taken ill. I did try to get one for my husband and I a few years ago-might have been before pandemic-lost track of time! Anyway I rang our locals Lions and they gave me number to ring, which I did and no one ever got back to me about it.

I went on line then got an email suggesting I call. I spoke to a very pleasant woman on 0121 441 4544.

The fridge bottles (more like a plastic tub) have been in use for some time. I got one for my mum and it was on her fridge door with all her meds info etc. She moved from her bungalow into a care home 5 years ago and it was a good couple of years before that I got it for her.

Can I just add that if you are a carer and look after someone who cannot Communicate you need two Lions containers in the fridge. Highly recommended for anyone living alone too.
You should be able to get the containers from your library or community mobility shop if you have one, if not contact The local Lions group directly. Yes the stickers and the document you need to fill in and keep inside comes with the container, you need to make sure you keep the list of medication up to date. I just put my latest prescription in there.
