Have I lost my cash? Carpetright!

Carpetright has gone bust within days of me paying for a bedroom carpet. They took my cash and even sent a chap round to measure up and give me a fitting date!! I am upset and furious. Received post this morning basically telling me to contact my bank and see if they are in a position to refund me. Unfortunately and foolishly I paid with a debit card which I know is not as secure as a credit card. I will visit my bank as soon as I can but wondered if anyone could give me any reassurance on this matter. I am not a happy bunny!!

I am so glad you have your money back. We nearly went to Carpetright back in June but ended up at SCS. We agreed with the sales person that the fitting would not be until the last half of August as I was about to go into hospital. Then got a call saying carpet must be fitted by end of July as SCS were stopping selling carpets and closing down their carpet distribution centre. Lady on the phone said they had had very little notice themselves. When the fitter came last week he told us it was his last job for SCS, he had arranged to move to Carpetright and then was told they were closing so he had no work at all planned after that day.

I feel sorry for people like the shop staff and distribution centre workers. who have lost jobs. I know when my step-son worked for a retailer who went bust a couple of days before payday, that he never saw his wage for that month.

Thankyou undines, I know you are correct . I should not have paid by debit card - won't make that mistake again.
Just been into my bank and received very helpful and sympathetic advice , phone number to ring etc. After jumping through a few hoops the money has been refunded into my account!! Used chargeback -
Callistemon, I can't thank you enough for the link you gave me . Had a message telling me all will be well unless Carpetright dispute my claim - don't think that will happen.
Such a relief , again thank Callistemon ๐Ÿ˜Š.

I'm really pleased to hear your news, Shelflife.

Hope you get this back via your Bank.
Happen to us years ago with Courts.. We orderd bedroom furniture for DD bedroom, they went under as we were due to get it.
We were so lucky, it had arrived in store, they honoured the orders they had in stock, so surprised when someone phoned us asking us to take delivery, what a relief.
We too paid by Debit card, I have never bought large items again on a Debit card, alway Credit card then paid it off.
With luck you might get your carpet?

We too had ordered from Courts . We got part of the order but my DD never got her new wardrobe. I don't think we lost money though. I can't remember as it is so long ago, but I think we had only paid a deposit so we probably paid the balance of the item we did receive.

If the goods were in stock you may still get the carpet. I hope you ae able to sort it out satisfactorily.

Really glad you got your money refunded. My DD won't have a credit card and I do worry about that as some hotels will only accept a credit card, and also it's safer for large purchases. Atm she uses her brother's card and transfers him the amount spent straight away. On her trip to France the booking agent wouldn't accept a debit card for her hotel.

Years ago I bought bedroom furniture from a company that went bust. i received a full refund even though the furniture had been put together and was being used in my kids bedroom! I didn't send it back. I still have the bookcase!

Why a refund when you had already received & built it up? Bit dishonest
