I remember going to church socials when |I was very small, and they used to finish with a hymn or two. "Eternal Father" was one of my favourites! I don't know why we sang it so often. We were a very inland community! I suppose, just after the war, we were very grateful to our fishermen. (Still are, of course)

I wish I hadn't put this thread under Chat. It will self exterminate in a few days!
Bit of a waste of all these links.

Deuuurh! hmm

Doesn't it keep active all the time we are using it? Hello Tech - anyone there. . . . .

It's just that anyone joining after the thread has gone off Actives, might have liked to have had a look at some of them.

So what you would like is a link on the front page to "uplifting hymns & music"?
ITWYM? grin

Actually, "Culture" might have been a better place for it. That's what these hymns are aren't they to give them their due? Our heritage.

whatisamashedupphrase Wed 08-Feb-12 11:10:42

No!!!! Nothing like that! Just the thread still there somewhere. People do seem to look over old threads when they join.

whatisamashedupphrase Wed 08-Feb-12 11:14:17

It's ok. They don't get deleted, not like on Mumsnet. Got that wrong. smile

Thank you, Whatis. Perfectly sublime, and yes, by the best.

One of my favourite hymns from school was 'Hills of the North Rejoice'. Good tune. anyone remember that one?

jeni Wed 08-Feb-12 16:47:58

Me!

whatisamashedupphrase Wed 08-Feb-12 17:41:48

Yes, I like that one too. Can't find a decent video though. This one is sung beautifully by choir of Caius College, Cambridge (daughter went there! (show-off!) smile), but I'm not sure the words are the ones I know.

No, I don't think they're the ones I know either, but I would not presume to question a Cambridge choir master! My piano teacher is a Cambridge music graduate - I don't presume to question him either!

I've just downloaded a couple of albums of favourite hymns, one by the Huddersfield Choral society and one by the choir of York Minster. It has made the housework go faster although I am glad no one is here to hear my singing.

Does anyone know 'Why those fears, behold tis Jesus, holds the helm and guides the ship'?
We had it at my Mother's funeral as it is one she kept quoting as she was dying, I know it's sentiments gave her peace in her final hours and think it's a beautiful hymn although not a well known one.

I'm not religious but I do like singing hymns. My favourite is the childrens hymn 'When a knight won his spurs'.

whatisamashedupphrase Wed 08-Feb-12 21:33:17

I'd never heard of this one Sook. Surprisingly for me (I like knights). It's lovely.

Nice pictures hear as well. www.youtube.com/watch?v=fiAVu-gY6mM&feature=related

artygran Wed 08-Feb-12 21:52:27

Ariadne
'River and mountain spring,
Hark to the advent voice,
Valley and lowland sing'

or have I got another version?
Who cares, its a jolly good hymn!

Sook Wed 08-Feb-12 23:03:03

wiamup I have a soft spot for knights too. Thanks for the link I loved all those Pre Raphaelite pictures.

glassortwo Glad you like it too.

When a knight won his spurs.....ah takes me straight back to Junior school. Anyone else remember 'Glad that I live am I'? www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB4paKLbP4s

Sook Thu 09-Feb-12 11:16:44

grannyactivisit I love Glad that I live am I. On beautiful days when I walk my dogs across the fields I often sing it out loud. Another favourite of mine is All creatures of your God and King.

Sook Thu 09-Feb-12 11:19:48

grannyactivist thank you for the link. Absolutely lovely!
