What do you think now?
(279 Posts)If you voted for Brexit - would you vote for it again, knowing what you know now? However you voted, do you think we should have another referendum - a peoples' vote?
I’m at a loss to understand why anyone would want to leave. Of course the EU is imperfect, everything in this world is. But the alternatives are worse. The fact is that two Brexit secretaries, both leavers, could not negotiate a better deal than the one now in play. Both sides agree that it is worse than being an EU member. Nearly everyone thinks no deal would also be far worse. The least bad option is to remain, hopefully with the opt outs that we agreed in the past. The EU is not being nasty to us, it is simply refusing to tear up its rule book just on our say so.
And there aren’t lots of sunlit uplands just waiting for us. We already have trade deals with 60% of the world through the EU and unlikely to get better on our own. The USA is another 20% and has far more muscle than us, any deal will be in their favour. China is a tough nut to crack (and Germany already has five times as much trade with China as we do, without leaving the EU). India wants free movement of people as a condition of a deal. There’s not a lot left after that.
Yes definitely still leave, more so now a European Army and Empire of Europe are being bandied about. The only vote we have ever had before the referendum regarding Europe is to join the EEC which is exactly what we want now - just a trade deal. So, those people who want another referendum, what happens if it is a small majority in favour of remaining - do we have the best of three?
16/17 yr olds having a vote???
If they did, they would probably vote to remain then would be the first ones called up to serve in the EU Army.
Unequivocally, I would still vote leave. We were all told quite plainly during the referendum debate what would be involved and that it would be complicated- but also what we would be leaving (the 4 pillars). Some people just need to stand up for Britain and rejoice in our strengths and the opportunites Brexit will give us, free from the constrictions of the burgeoning EU superstate. Yes, it might be difficult, but I didn't see us flinch from what we had to do to eliminate Hitler, so we just need to 'stiffen the sinews, summon up the blood'. I might add that, now we've seen the EU's true behaviour when crossed - childish, snide and rude, basically - my view is even more entrenched.
Dreamspirit being as the EU have financed many areas in this country including lifting Liverpool out of the mire where do you propose the money comes from to continue building this country up when local councils are too broke to remove weeds that are flourishing on our pavements etc ?
Vote leave and so do the big businessmen of this country !
Vote leave and see Corbyn getting rid of Trident and its protection of this country because he'll be voted in when the traitors of this government oust TM out of power. You talk about Hitler well, famous last words because dictators like him love to see a country which is downtrodden. Is this what you want for our future generation ?
I'm just heartily sick of the whole affair, I hate the very word Brexit, I just wish they would get on with it, the people voted out so out it should be.
I am interested to hear the leavers opinions. Some I cannot comprehend the thinking, some I do see where they are coming from, even if my opinion is very different.
The references to the pre and post war eras as evidence of a strong Britain may well be true but, since that time, the balance of power and influence across the world has changed enormously. Britain, on its own, wealds far less influence than it once did.
At one time we were less reliant on an 'immigrant' workforce but post war we looked to the Commonwealth to help us out and we still need people from other places, to help us keep the place going! That is not going to change anytime soon! But we know that was one of the big factors for those voting to leave. They preferred fewer immigrants to fill the gaps.
The money that UK has received via EU schemes , in all sorts of areas, from scientific/medical research, to farming subsidies has been hugely beneficial to a great number of industries.
Whilst I am sure that the bureaucracy could be slimmed down it still feels like a sledgehammer has been applied to a rather small nut and that if we had worked, more co-operatively, we may have learned together to use a nutcracker and improved the 'club' for all members.
I do worry about UK being swamped by US, Chinese or Russian influences.
Totally agree with you FlexibleFriend. I voted leave then and would do so again now, and again and again and again
We hold general elections every 5 years (or less) no-one says 'why must we vote again?'. The people who are against another vote are, I believe, frightened that it will not come out the way they want it to (both Remainers & Leavers). Be brave! It may not be as bad as you think and, unless you think it was a fluke vote, why would you not want to re-run it? I believe in the future of this country whether we are in or out - one way will be harder and more expensive and the other will be easier and cheaper but - we will survive!
Yes, I would.
I voted to leave and would do the same again.
I’m glad TM has what appears to be a loving DH. I hope he had a large drink and her supper waiting for her when she got home last night, she must have been jiggered.
No to another referendum. Too many people on all sides have behaved disgracefully! And if we don't have any deals - does that really matter? Is there anyone who believes that Europe won't keep selling us cars when they charge us more than any other of their markets? Or pretty much anything else they sell to us? It is only petty beaurocracy that will forever get in the way!
I agree with previous posters that 16 & 17 years of age should have the right to vote, after all it is their future.
My Mother left School and was working at fifteen years of age, which I appreciate a lot of people's parents on here would have.
I have read every single reply. Some very valid points.
My personal opinion is that some people voted without being aware of all of the facts, new facts have come to light, so in my opinion again that changes the goalposts.
I think many of the younger generation did not vote, and that was a huge mistake. Whether they were Remain or Leave their vote should have counted.
I recently passed by a debate going on about Brexit in a City I was visiting and stopped to listen for a while.
A male University Student gave a very moving speech about how he had voted to leave, but felt he had personally made a huge mistake, and felt he had to go public to voice his mistake. That takes a lot of guts to do in my opinion.
There are always going to be people who voted Remain, or leave who will never be swayed.
The Country is a shambles...
We are more vulnerable than we have ever been in many years!
My personal opinion is that we should all act upon everything we now know, new facts included.
Not be swayed by how others vote, Husbands, Wives, Family & Friends. Each of us has to live with the outcome, so yes I think with all of this new information we should have another referendum.
Maccyt1955 Less than half were satisfied and wanted to remain , so what I ask has made life so different to those who like myself want out.
We, H and self purchased our own house in 1960 as many of our friends were doing Mortgage interest rates were high but jobs were not hard to find. I was working as was H. We improved out lifestyle as the years went on through our own efforts.
We went with the flow believing life would be even better were we to be a United Europe.???????
What do we have 21C ?Buying ones own home? and I know of three families who are living with mum and dad in the hope of having enough saved to put down on a mortgage on a property at an affordable price
Is this progress
More living on the streets, food banks, struggling NHS and on the increase. Are we not in reverse Was this quite what we had in mind.? The rich getting richer the poor getting poorer. Oh but we have freedom of movement! To what exactly? Not I imagine of use to the homeless or hungry.
* sarah* what will uk gov be able to do, post Brexit, to alleviate the issues you raise that it can't do now?
graykat - totally agree
railman - you are right, as well
CarlyD7 - that's it in a nutshell
Let's give the vote to 16/17 year olds who will have to live with the outcome and deal with the disasters.
The EU has nothing directly to do with the lack of housing and mortgages - the austerity of the last almost 10 years are a direct result of the global financial crash and we will be paying for Brexit for the next 10 years, at least. What suckers we are!
counterpoint: The voice of reason, pity there isn't more of it about.
I am still waiting for a Leaver to explain just what it is about the EU they don't like. Apart from the myths and lies they seem to have got hold of which they do not like having corrected. And I don't just mean straight bananas.
I mean that it is unelected (so what is your MEP doing), that they all hate us, (they like the UK being part, it balances things out nicely), and that they are going to have an army ( may be necessary if Trump pulls out of NATO) but it certainly won't be conscripted ( I have no idea who threw that one in the pot).
Why do some people keep banging on about Trump.
The president can only run for 2 terms. Trump will probably get in again and will then be gone forever.
Not so with the EUSSR.
This blood sucking power hungry bunch of leeches will be there forever. Only the names will change.

Why do you blame those things on the EU, rather than the US banks that caused the crash, and the Conservative government that has imposed austerity on us for 10 years?
We were the 5th wealthiest country in the world in the EU. What was wrong with that?
I think most of the problems were because of government policies in the UK and nothing to do with membership of the EU. The very rich prospered whilst the poorest got even poorer. That was not the result of anything to come out of Brussels. As others have said, some of our cities have been changed for good with EU money when Local Councils didn't have the resources. The irony of course being that the centre where the Conservatives held their recent conference has a plaque acknowledging that it was built with funding from the EU.
However, events in London today have overtaken this debate.
The EU does not give us money!!!! It just gives us back some of our money that we have to give to them to be part of their club?????
Many people did not understand what Brexit meant (I know that many did). An example was a vox pop on the local news the day after the vote. In a market in a nearby town, a woman said “This is the happiest day of my life. Now I’ll be able to get a doctor’s appointment and get my kids into the schools we want them to go to.” I wonder what she’s thinking now?
GrannyGravy13 the EU poured millions into the regeneration of Liverpool. It certainly wasn't the council that's for sure.

Some benefits, as Joni Mitchell said, will only be missed when they are gone!
I want the future to be bright. I want the UK to be a vibrant, outward looking and safe community.
I am really not convinced it will be better.. let us all hope it does not get worse.
