The f****** Daily Mail

I read the daily mail because it has a logical easy to understand layout and you can manoeuvre through it quite easily on a laptop. Every morning I tell myself not to read it because it’s usually depressing but I end up reading it anyway as I don’t watch the news, and I need to keep up a bit with what’s happening.
Last week they ran a story about an asteroid that’s going to hit us. Then yesterday/today they are running a story about the earth’s magnetic field going wrong. Honestly are they trying to make people scared and depressed. I know I was, didn’t sleep last night for the intense feeling of dread.
I am just so angry that the DM can print such stories at the
moment. There should be a criminal offence of scaring the public and they should be made to print nothing but happy stories and nice pictures of puppies and kittens for a month. (Just joking).
Rant over, enjoy your day. I’m off to water the garden, oops something else we will be being told to ration soon. ???

Callistemon Fri 22-May-20 15:19:47

Not DNPM - the DM!

Desdemona Fri 22-May-20 15:26:00

The Daily Mail is a horrible, spiteful, lying old rag whose journalists mostly have a lack of decent writing skills and I am surprised anyone bothers to read it.

Esspee Fri 22-May-20 15:27:27

I don’t read the Daily Fail (not a spelling mistake) but do remember in Junior Hons Geology being taught that a reversal of the earth’s magnetic poles was long overdue. If this is the subject of the article then all I can say is that the reversal is now even more overdue. (50 years more ?)

The Independent started quite well but the new editor has turned it into another biased paper like the Guardian. I suppose people want to read papers that support their own views no matter how ridiculous they seem to others.

I was about 10 when I read an article by an esteemed science journalist stating that by 1970 the whole world would be starving to death. I was a bit concerned but not frantic and by the time we got there we had various food mountains.

I used to be a worrier as a child but later started thinking “Can I do anything about the situation?” If yes do whatever is necessary. If not, just don’t give it headspace. Worrying about things you have no control over is futile. As is getting your knickers in a twist over other people’s speech or idiosyncrasies.

It's been moving for years but has speeded up I think, Esspee.
It might be 3rd Rock from the Sun but there is a lot going on inside!

Dinahmo Fri 22-May-20 15:45:34

Poor Graun - coming in for a bit of tick here. If those of you are critical actually read it you would find that there is a wide range of people writing columns and articles, with a variety of political opinions, not just those left of centre.

As for buying a paper just for its tv guide, unless your tv is ancient you can find the listings on your tv. An put your money to better uses.

Sussexborn Fri 22-May-20 15:48:50

Their money, their choice? Surely. Or have I missed something?

ladymuck Fri 22-May-20 15:54:00

The only paper I buy now is the local one, and that is mainly for the crossword and the local history articles. It ends up lining my budgie's cage.

Callistemon Fri 22-May-20 16:04:57

Oh, but it has been so annoying looking for the listings on our modern TV, Dinahmo.

It is we who are ancient and like a TV guide, sadly not at the moment though.

And I can read Monty Don's column, worth two bob of anybody's money.

There is a wide variety of people writing columns and articles, with a variety of political opinions not just those right of centre.

If anyone reads a newspaper of any political leaning and doesn't take it all with a degree of scepticism, then they need to broaden their outlook and seek further information.

Baggs Fri 22-May-20 16:15:14

Daily Mail hatred is intellectual snobbery. Complaining about it is a bit like virtue signalling of the "this paper is really beneath my contempt" variety.

Which is fine.

So don't read it. ?‍♀️

JenniferEccles Fri 22-May-20 16:15:28

There would be howls of outrage GrannyGravy13 !?

Callistemon Fri 22-May-20 16:21:23

So don't read it
That's the bit I don't understand.

Perhaps some posters like to be permanently outraged and are constantly seeking new sources.

MadCatWoman1 Fri 22-May-20 16:22:07

I don't know how any adult, anywhere would lose sleep over anything they've read in ANY newspaper. I watch the news once a day, and I read the Daily Mail online (Husband likes the actual paper for the crosswords etc).

Callistemon Fri 22-May-20 16:27:06

I'm going to read it now.
I may read the Guardian afterwards.

Or I may go and make a G and T
Oops, a bit early!
Reading it is.

merlotgran Fri 22-May-20 16:28:37

Perhaps some posters like to be permanently outraged and are constantly seeking new sources.

That must be why I get a childish 'tee hee' moment every time I post a link from the DM.

Especially on a Harry and Meghan thread! grin

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 22-May-20 16:37:09

I read the Daily Mail (Online) only when I want to annoy myself. They are racist, anti-women and make stories up all the time. When the revolution comes they will be first against the wall. They and their trolls are what has made this country awful. Rant over. I buy the Guardian and i.

TerriBull Fri 22-May-20 16:43:06

Since the lockdown, we've only been buying one weekly newspaper, The Sunday Times. So reading more on line, mainly The Guardian and its nemesis Mail on line, after my husband's been on the latter for a few minutes, he often explodes with "Oh for God's sake must subscribe to The Times, who are these people and why is bloody Amanda Holden here every day?? " "Side bar of shame innit Don't look!" says I. "read about the asteroid about to hit the earth, I'm sure that would be far more up lifting!" Thing is he is constantly asking me who's who, well I don't know either, apart from the usual suspects, supreme bragging showoffs Holden and Beckham and the famous for nothing in particular mob, Kardashians and that awful Collins woman confused Popular culture even more desperate during the lockdown!

MerylStreep Fri 22-May-20 16:46:42

Ladyleftfieldlover
they are racist They are the *only paper who were responsible for putting the killers of Steven Laurence in prison.

Callistemon Fri 22-May-20 16:48:46

The online version is rather different to the print version, isn't it.
It's as if it's two different papers.

Marmight Fri 22-May-20 16:49:31

The DM is hardly a ‘news’ paper. More a vehicle for salacious gossip, half truths and innuendo. It’s what my dear old Dad would have termed a ‘comic’. He read the Times & Telegraph during the week but allowed himself a comic on Sundays. The Express. He liked John Junor ?. However, I do have to confess to perusing the DM App occasionally, usually at 3 am when I can’t sleep. Trouble is I haven't heard of most of the subjects so I am somewhat in the dark and those I have heard of I avoid like the plague - Piers Morgan, the Sussex’s, Janet Street Porter et al. I think my convent boarding school education was somewhat lacking . I can’t believe some of the things which apparently go on.... but it’s good for the occasional laugh and usually remedies the insomnia ?

merlotgran Fri 22-May-20 16:49:43

I read the Daily Mail (Online) only when I want to annoy myself.

Blimey!

#nowtsostrange

Callistemon Fri 22-May-20 16:52:55

I'm not in the habit of wanting to annoy myself.

I find other people can do that and that's quite enough for me!!

MissAdventure Fri 22-May-20 16:55:46

Nobody reads the mail, but everyone knows all about it.
How strange. smile

patcaf Fri 22-May-20 17:00:11

Bought the Mail on Sunday for the first time in a long while. It was awful. How could what was a good newspaper some years ago descend in to this. Really just a rag.

Rarely buy newspapers and this has convinced me not to try again.

Callistemon Fri 22-May-20 17:08:22

MissA grin
