... but I just can't take to Kale! It seems to be the magic new ingredient, but really - it's chewy where a vegetable shouldn't be, it's harsh in flavour, eating it feels like a punishment. Oh, and I can't stand avocados either, too much like biting into soap.

Anyone else given up on a particular foodstuff, healthy or otherwise?

Charleygirl15, one of the reasons we've been trying kale is because of DH's AMD. However, he was also advised to drink a glass of Argentinian Malbec every day - apparently it's got a lot of whatever it is that's good for you, more than any other red wine. So naturally I have to keep him company and of course it is purely medicinal .... Our recycling bin is full of medicine bottles!

Shop bought Kale is awful because it's too old! Like shop runner beans! This sort of veg is absolutely wonderful if you grow your own, pop down to the veg patch, pick and cook immediately!

Daisymae Tue 26-May-20 10:15:36

It's edible when crispy! Drizzle with olive oil and roast. Does not take long, but not really sure about the nutritional value. It's one of those things like spinach, only reason to eat it is that it's good for you. ?

Susie42 Tue 26-May-20 10:19:10

@ Gulligranny - I like everything that you don't, the only vegetable I really dislike is endive.

Craftycat Tue 26-May-20 10:19:59

I'll eat practically anything except coconut ( actually most nuts except cashew) , pickles, sweet potatoes & instant coffee.

mimismo Tue 26-May-20 10:26:22

Rabbit. Despite DH expounding it's properties (he's on a diet) all I got was a mouthful of bones - disgusting!

sarahanew Tue 26-May-20 10:30:05

Absolutely love kale! Try cooking it in the oven with olive oil. Twenty minutes stirring half way through so oil gets all over it. Lovely and crispy

QuiltyElaine Tue 26-May-20 10:32:09

Have you tried roasting it? It's delicious! cut out the tough stalk and shred the rest, roast for about 20mins at 200C with a little olive oil and sea salt. It tastes a bit like Chinese Seaweed you can get from takeaways. My DH and Son hate kale any other way but love this!

GrammarGrandma Tue 26-May-20 10:33:58

I like kale and adore avocado! Aside from being vegetarian and a gluten free eater, the only three things I don't like are beetroot (makes me ill), pineapple unless very fresh (it hurts my mouth) and goat cheese (can't bear the smell).

Poppyred Tue 26-May-20 10:35:53

Tea
Runny eggs
Honey
Gherkins
Herring.
???

Moggycuddler Tue 26-May-20 10:36:50

Kale has been horrible in every form I've ever tried it. I hate the taste and smell of seafood.

Thecatshatontgemat Tue 26-May-20 10:46:17

The trend to include sweet fruit in a savory dish.
Why!!!!!!????????
Sultanas in curry:NO.
Apricots in stew:NO.
Pomegranate seeds on salad:NO.
Pineapple on ham:NO.
Apple sauce with pork:NO.
Apple in a salad:NO.
Etc, etc....
Ugh. Makes me heave......

Until recently kale was cattle food. Years ago the French wouldn’t eat corn. Chicken food.
I don’t like either as well as curry and goats cheese.

dontmindstayinghome Tue 26-May-20 10:55:51

I don't mind kale - it can be a bit woody though.

My absolute worst is Aubergine (or eggplant). Its completely tasteless and has the colour and consistency of something produced by a serious chest infection!

We were served aubergine bake once on holiday and after putting a forkful in my mouth my husband asked why I had gone such a funny colour. I had to ask the waiter to remove it as I couldn't even look at it grin

joaniec7 Tue 26-May-20 11:00:44

I absolutely love kale!

janipans Tue 26-May-20 11:00:48

But have you tried Green superfood soup - leeks and onions plus kale & peas and some parsley or other herbs, boiled and liquidised with a good dollop of creme fraiche and pepper to taste - Yum!
... and courgette cake with home made lime curd filling and cream cheese topping ... to die for!
I do have some pet hates though - radishes, all offal, snails, eels and randomly pears (it's the texture! - ugh!).

4allweknow Tue 26-May-20 11:14:49

Kale leaf has to be stripped from any stalks and ribs. Otherwise you end up with chewy tough bits. Try making kale crisps, recipes simple and online. I saute kale usually but it does have a strong taste, I agree so you have to add something for me it's sprinkle of parmesan. Or, add to vegetables soup. Really it's a winter vegetable, wouldn't consider it in these months.

Romola Tue 26-May-20 11:22:19

I remember kale from my childhood as a last resort when all other veg like sprouts, cabbage and even the root veg had been eaten. I would never eat it by choice.
Who else remembers the lovely fresh taste of the first rhubarb at the end of winter?

Petalpop Tue 26-May-20 11:32:04

Fresh Coriander it is revolting.
Prunes because I still have haunting memories of school dinners when you had to eat everything dished up to you. I used to sit and cry but still had to eat them. How lucky children are today on that respect. Scarred me for life. Ha ha

Cambia Tue 26-May-20 11:35:41

Just love avocado. I use it instead of butter on almost everything. At the moment I am in Greece so they are cheap too! Not keen on kale either but I read the other day that you should “massage” it with your fingers before eating and it is much nicer. Going to try again!

lovebeigecardigans1955 Tue 26-May-20 11:45:42

There are lots of things which are said to be good for you but are unpleasant. I don't like kale, Brussels sprouts, rhubarb or pomegranates.
I've totally gone off - pickled onions, radishes, Wedding or Christmas cake, ginger beer, pork pie, even mince pies.
I've never seen the attraction of nuts, curry, or steak, and the thought of the creepy skin on a rice pudding almost makes me turn myself inside out with disgust.

annodomini Tue 26-May-20 12:02:47

Spinach - my mum used to 'persuade' me to eat it but I always hated it and when I, out of politeness, ate some when visiting my sister, I had a most uncomfortable night thereafter. Never again. I discovered that avocados made me very poorly when I was living in Kenya where they were plentiful and cheap. I threw up in the mission doctor's sink! Oddly enough, years later, my dad rang up to see if it might be avocado that was giving him 'the runs', Must 'run' in the family.

Thecatshatontgemat
I am so glad you dont like fruit with savoury food because i am the same and most friends think I am odd.

I like most foods but cant stand tripe. I love most seafood except cockles and raw oysters. In Australia I had oysters wrapped in bacon and cooked and that was delicious.
I love cheese but cant see the point of cottage cheese and quark. I have had a lovely delicate goats cheese in France but here in Portugal it is smelly and very strong.
Cant stand broad beans and they are very popular here. Same goes for butter beans and kidney beans.
