I don't know about you, but if I feel a bit down in the dumps I put some music on and have a sing (and sometimes a dance).
My karaoke song is either I will Survive or Dancing Queen (tiddly) or Yellow Submarine (sloshed).
What's yours?

First I was afraid, I was petrified........

Fennel Sun 16-Aug-20 19:52:05

Discogran don't worry -I had a reply prepared and lost it.
I SO agree with you - music is my last resort when I'm feeling down. This one from Abba expresses it well

I have a few favourites - some to cheer me up and some to calm me down. Best cheerup for me is this

And one for pure calm

And then there are all our personal tunes and songs from stages in our lives, sad or happy.

Thanks Fennel, those are great, so uplifting. I am listening to some old sixties music at the moment, cheering me up no end. ?

I listen to music most of the time, and in any mood.Music with a fast beat to get household chores done, and music to relax to, mainly classical or opera when doing crosswords or when we just sit with a glass of something. What a sad world it would be without music, and aren’t we lucky to have what we want to hear at the touch of a button.

lemongrove Sun 16-Aug-20 20:46:35

I even enjoy melancholy music ( Lord L calls it dreary) ?
Such as This Ane /Ain Night ( very old Yorkshire dialect funeral dirge) ......sorry to bring the mood down? but I think it’s rather beautiful and spooky.

At the wedding we were went to back in February of this year, my Godson needed a lift to the florist to collect the the buttonhole sprays for the gentlemen. Nosing around, he switched on the radio, the CD was engaged and as it came towards the end, the finale struck up, it was a gallop.

He recognised it instantly, he called it the cancan song. He was listening to Offenbach's Orpheus in the Underworld.

lemongrove Sun 16-Aug-20 21:00:41

Just remembered the actual name of the Yorkshire folk song,
It’s The Lyke Wake Dirge.

sodapop Sun 16-Aug-20 21:24:36

I remember the Lyke Wake Walk but not the dirge lemongrove

I like anything from Les Mis, love that musical.

lemongrove Sun 16-Aug-20 21:30:01

You can listen to it on youtube Soda there are many versions.
The old folk band pentangle ( pentacle?) if you like the dialect and the Andrew Byrd version if you don’t.There are other versions as well.
I also like Irish folk music, Danu are a good band, songs in Gaelic and in English.

Spent the last hour listening to the Proms on BBC 4, lovely.

annep1 Sun 16-Aug-20 23:05:29

At the minute my cheer up music is a cd of hits recorded in the sixities by the French singer Francoise Hardy.
It takes me right back. I feel young again. I don't understand all the lyrics but I can sing some of them.

annep1 Sun 16-Aug-20 23:06:19

sixities sixties

merlotgran Sun 16-Aug-20 23:41:34

French pop music was definitely inferior to English in the sixties. I really couldn't get the appeal of Johnny Halliday although I liked Richard Anthony but wandering around singing Francoise Hardy's 'Tous les garcons at les filles de mon age' felt so cool.'

Michael Buble songs! I especially love his Frank Sinatra covers. I love other stuff too - particularly from the 1970’s which is my era. Also ABBA, Simon & Garfunkel, Queen, Elbow (One Day Like This), Marvin Gaye. I love music with a good beat!

annep1 Mon 17-Aug-20 15:15:52

It still does merlotgran. I want to grow my hair again and wear a minidress.

Peardrop50 Mon 17-Aug-20 15:23:54

Barry White, My first my last my everything.
Nina Simone, My baby just cares for me.
Jerry Lee Lewis, Great balls of fire.
Queen, anything
Status Quo, anything
Johnny Cash, Sunday morning coming down, only after a good Saturday night out.
Definitely a pop person, like a bit of jazz, classical, folk but can't bear opera.

Kate1949 Mon 17-Aug-20 15:24:41

Beatles for me. I can bop around the kitchen to Happy Just To Dance With You with the lovely George on vocals. I love Michael Bublé too honeyrose. I'm so glad we got to see him live before lockdown. He was amazing. What a showman.

honeyrose Mon 17-Aug-20 22:13:33

I saw Michael Buble too, Kate1949. At Nottingham last December. Brilliant! Seen him 4 of 5 times altogether, but the December concert was the best.

Kate1949 Mon 17-Aug-20 23:05:50

honeyrose Lucky you. I'm envious. This isn't bragging but I was a Beatle nut. I saw them five times and have a photo of myself with them. I saw the Rolling Stones, Tom Jones, Elton John's, Tony Bennett, many more. Apologies. That does sound like bragging. Michael Bublé took some beating I have to say.

Lilypops Mon 17-Aug-20 23:12:52

If I need to get myself moving I play I love to boogie by T Rex. Or I saw her standing there or anything by the Beatles,
I love ZZtop. Sharp dressed man
Any of those will get me through the housework,

CherryCezzy Mon 17-Aug-20 23:35:52

lemongrove, Pentangle definitely did do a version of Lyke Wake Dirge which is one of many reworkings of the 17th century text. Bert Jansch was an amazing guitarist.
I have many Pentangle albums (all vinyl) and had the privilege to see them play many years ago.

Music is on every day in our house. Me and my partner often sing along. We like many different types of music, except most opera and we're definitely not disco fans.

DiscoGran - I've just realised that your original post title refers to the Carpenter's song:
www.youtube.com/watch?v=U07qx3MBEoI&pbjreload=101
another one of my favourites which I used to play on the piano and sing along to until old age hit.
