Single sex couple on Strictly.

Just heard that, for the first time this year, there will be a single sex couple competing on Strictly.

What do people think about that?

I can’t help thinking that ballroom dancing is designed for a man and a woman. Won’t it be a bit odd?

On the other hand, I have no negative feelings about single sex weddings and feel strongly that people should be allowed to love whom they wish. People’s sex life too, is their business.

I am finding this latest announcement a bit difficult to come to terms with. Am I being narrow-minded?

At 5 my DGD was flower girl at her aunt's wedding to my Dil and loved the whole thing. Oh the glamour of having 2 brides!
Shortly after, we stopped to watch a 'traditional' wedding at a local church.
She questioned the fairness.
'I know girls can get married and a boy and girl can too but I have never seen 2 boys get married so that's not fair!' She was assured that 2 boys can and was pleased when a year or so later she saw the pictures of family friends at their all-boys' ceremony.
Children accept what they see as fair just as long as no-one makes a big fuss about it.
"Out of the mouths of babes........."

I don’t think Susannah Reid will be competing this year kitty ?

Thank you BlueSky

Some women prefer to be with women, some men prefer to be with men. It really is that simple and both DDS and GDS at a younger age, accepted this until age appropriate explanations were discussed.

I doubt that it would even register with a child that 2 men, or 2 women, were dancing together. Children are far more accepting and open minded than adults, until they're taught otherwise.

I just hope her mum doesn't come on gn. grin

Yes that's exactly what I would say lovebeigecardigans, why? would you then launch into an explanation of their presumed sex life ? Nobody's business and hopefully our grandchildren's generation will not give a fig for a person's sexuality, on or off of Strictly.

I don't watch Strictly but as it's on at tea-time, what would you reply if a small child were to say, "Look Gan Gan, there are two women/men dancing together!" Would you just smile and say, "Oh yes, so there are" and leave it at that?

BlueSky Wed 02-Sept-20 17:51:39

Well said Kalu!

LullyDully Wed 02-Sept-20 17:47:48

It doesn't sorry me but Mr LD may be a bit queasy until he gets used to it.
Being tall, smile and at an all girls school, I always had to dance the man's part when we did ballroom.
(We did the quick step to In Our Mountain Greenery.)smile

Considering what gays and lesbians endured in the past. Made to feel ashamed and everything else they had to suffer simply because, they were not like us and shunned by society. I am pleased the ridiculous law was changed to accept, we are not all the same.

Good luck to this couple in their effort to win the Strictly trophy.

I have to say I ve never heard of Caroline Quinton so I googled her and never watched any of the programmes she’s been in so not familiar with her Certainly know Nicola Adams though

Maggiemaybe Wed 02-Sept-20 17:01:06

My money’s on Nicola being up to the lifting!

Sparklefizz Wed 02-Sept-20 16:45:19

SNAP ginny

I'm not the slightest bit bothered about same sex dancers on Strictly but I do think it limits some of the moves they can do, and this was noticeable with the same sex skaters in Dancing on Ice, even though one of the men was slight.

I expect Nicola Adams is very strong and fit as she is an athlete but even so, she still may not be able to lift another woman above her head or whatever, so the routines will have to be adapted to take this into account.

I didn't recognise Caroline Quentin with her new hairstyle when she appeared via video link on the One Show last night.

ginny Wed 02-Sept-20 16:43:41

I don’t have any problem or think it ‘odd’.
My main thought was that which one would have the strength to lift the other.

Maggiemaybe Wed 02-Sept-20 16:10:33

Lucca

Has strictly been recorded ? Otherwise how can they do it ? (My granddaughter says it’s ok because they are all married to each other !! )

I think they’re having a shorter series, Lucca. No audience and all the participants will be living in the same hotel.

I’m a bit of an occasional Strictly viewer, but will watch this series for Nicola and Caroline Quentin. I can’t see anything to think about re the single sex partnership. At my girls’ grammar we only ever danced with other girls, whether in PE or at the occasional school disco.

Don't understand what the issue is here? Same sex dancers on Strictly? So what? confused

honeyrose Wed 02-Sept-20 15:57:44

It will certainly be different. I don’t really know how I feel about it, but i’ll watch it anyway. Nicola is lovely - with a real passion for life and with a great sense of fun. People can’t help their sexuality so I think i’ll be fine with it. DH is a little more prejudiced however, but that’s his opinion on the matter.

Jane10 Wed 02-Sept-20 15:57:41

Remember Joyce Grenfell and 'Stately as a galleon'?

welbeck Wed 02-Sept-20 15:52:06

i don't think nicola adams goes in for, or to, big flouncy dresses. but who knows. remember anne widdecombe descending on a wire. who'd a thunk it.
in traditional societies, eg, strict jewish, men only dance with men, ditto women only with women.
OP, many unfamiliar things seem odd at first.
i think same sex sounds better than single sex.
i disapprove of boxing, but i approve of nicola adams.

Starblaze Wed 02-Sept-20 15:51:17

I forget this is an issue still at times.

The other day I saw a stunning picture of two women and their dog after getting married in Aus and underneath it said something like:

"here is our beautiful puppy being flower girl at our wedding, just two years ago this was illegal"

Not the exact words but, I sat there scratching my head thinking why would it be illegal for a dog to be at a wedding.... Until I remembered that homophobia is a thing and it was the actual marriage that was illegal before.

I don't think same sex dancers or trans dancers would have really had much of an impact on me at all lol

Marriage is about love and dancing is about movement

PPE with sparkles

sodapop Wed 02-Sept-20 15:49:04

It's just different Tweedle24 reflects the way we live our lives now, I'm surprised its taken this long. At least Strictly may be a bit more interesting now.

Galaxy Wed 02-Sept-20 15:42:46

I really like nicola Adams. I know it's not the point of the thread but how will they social distance, it wont be quite the same if they are in ppe ?

BlueBelle Wed 02-Sept-20 15:37:50

I thought they d already done it with guys but as someone up thread said that was skating I don’t watch either all too contrived and fake for me
Oh for goodness sake what a blooming fuss about nothing I ve got photos of my Nan ballroom dancing with a female friend if there were no men around, women would dance with women while the husbands sat talking or drinking their beer at the bar
Don’t understand what’s strange about it tweedle? Who says that it has to be a man and a woman (just because that’s the convention way ) dancing is for enjoyment fun and pleasure Not for worrying ‘how it looks’
