How the Royal Family might change with Charles (then William) as Monarch?

As many here will, hopefully, live to experience the reign of Charles and possibly even William, how do you see the Monarchy and the Royal Family changing, adapting, innovating?
Do you envisage much change?

I digress here, but when the Kents and the Gloucesters die, do their elder children inherit the titles, or do they revert to the Crown? I seem to remember seeing somewhere they carry on, but the ‘HRH’ doesn’t.

Come on Annie and Merlotgran, I bet you know. Will save me looking it up!

What about the Big Houses/Castles/Palaces, their long term futures?
Should the Monarch stop gifting houses to family? (Gatcombe, Anmer, Frogmore, KP, St.James' P, Royal Lodge.......?)

That's from their private money, though.

Buckingham Palace and Windsor are the only ones which are Offices of State and official Royal Residences owned by the Crown.

If I could afford to buy my children houses I would too. Why not?

Ixion that is worth considering.
Should any of us gift our wealth or property to our family members or should we give it up for the public good?

Some Gransnetters think all private property should go to the Government upon death, there was a thread about it a while ago.

The malicious rumours about William and Rose (?) turned out to be just that. She wasn’t even in this country when the illicit romance was supposed to have taken place. Interesting how people like to believe the worst when it suits their agenda.

I read that 70% of Brits were in favour of retaining the Monarchy but I tend to avoid the Guardian and the so called Independent.

I prefer to stick with the monarchy especially given the actions of various presidents recently.

I think they do, Calendargirl but the HRH is no longer appropriate as they are too far down the line of succession.

I have been wondering if they will keep their usual names when they become King. Would PC be Charles the III or IV ?
What about William? King Billy might cause some ructions or consternation in NI.

Anniebach Thu 15-Apr-21 13:16:25

Calandergirl. ? the present Duke of Gloucester inherited the title from his father, he is also a Prince because he is the grandson of a king, if he has sons they will not be a Prince because they are great grandchildren of a king , same for the
Kent’s

ixion Thu 15-Apr-21 13:21:15

Just how much would Prince Charles and, increasingly perhaps, Prince William have to 'give up' in an attempt to modernise the Monarchy?
How 'like us' would we like them to become?

They'll keep the dukedoms though won't they?

Anniebach Thu 15-Apr-21 13:40:29

Yes Merlot

Have any of you out there inherited a home/ house from your families? Have you perhaps be left a small or large fortune, you know the sort of thing , something that you yourself didn’t earn, build, buy etc.....
I ask out of curiosity.

No. What I've got, I earned.

No children, so its going to the Dog and Cat home. grin

Bridgeit Thu 15-Apr-21 14:39:09

Brilliant, many a cat ,dog etc have thankfully benifted from this kindness
Sadly on the odd occasion ones money can end up with a person whom it most definitely was not intended for?

JaneJudge Thu 15-Apr-21 15:53:54

A good proportion of people just have no assets of any worth (inc housing) and nothing to pass down and therefore nothing for people to inherit.

Calendargirl Thu 15-Apr-21 15:56:34

Thanks Merlotgran and Annie, that’s what I thought.

The RF make use of 19 homes these are fully funded heavily subsidised by the tax payer. So not theirs to give to family, Plus there is around the clock security. So if we had an elected Head of State what's the RF is theirs to keep so Balmoral and Sandringham I think. The rest we keep. By the way Balmoral and Sandringham were bought from surplus of the extra money given so if RF had enough to buy these two surely given too much.

Calendargirl Thu 15-Apr-21 16:00:38

I think they are given the choice of how they want to be named Granny23. Apparently when the Queen’s father died, she was asked what name she wished to be known by and she said “My own, of course”.

Expect Charles will be King Charles, and Will will be King William.

Both nice and regal.

Alegrias1 Thu 15-Apr-21 16:06:48

They could each choose to be known as King Arthur. That would make it interesting.

(Charles Phillip Arthur George and William Arthur Phillip Louis)

Grany Thu 15-Apr-21 16:11:18

Or Burger King

Anniebach Thu 15-Apr-21 16:14:46

Balmoral was bought in 1855,
Sandringham was bought 1862

The Queen has reached a good age but she isn’t that old.

ixion Thu 15-Apr-21 16:18:26

Please can anyone tell me what will happen to Balmoral if Scotland gains independence?
A tax on second homes? Limited residence rights each year? Just curious (and ignorant!)

Alegrias1 Thu 15-Apr-21 16:21:41

Well, here in Scotland anyone who wants to be thought of as Scottish is very welcome to come and stay. And since she's our Queen too, she can come and visit her own house any time she likes. Perhaps she'll give up her British nationality though, since her mum was Scottish of course.

Callistemon Thu 15-Apr-21 17:05:32

Won't people be allowed dual nationality, Alegrias?

I hope all my Scottish friends don't move north of the border again!

Alegrias1 Thu 15-Apr-21 17:11:28

Well if they put me in charge people will be allowed dual nationality Call. Not much chance of that happening though!

I think there is a belief that if (when? smile) we get independence then we become a republic at the same time. Unfortunately I think that's a step too far just now, so the Queen will still be the Queen of Scots.

lemongrove Thu 15-Apr-21 17:23:11

You can be Scottish and British you know Alegrias. In fact you already are, as is the Queen.
