Going back to your original question, I would say “no” you shouldn’t have intervened. At 84 and with a young granddaughter, you would have put yourself potentially in danger. Anyone suggesting you in particular (at 80 years +) are, respectfully, naive. As some have suggested, he could have lashed out at you or worse, pulled a hidden knife/flicknife. He would have been slightly high in adrenaline, as well.
Shops should employ security staff where they can and leave tackling potentially dangerous shoplifters to themselves. If you are a younger person and feel you have a suitable approach to dealing with a shoplifter, then fine, but not at 84.
I once witnessed someone running out of a local co-op with a basket of food, which was a bit shocking/surprising, but I didn’t report it as [hopefully] this food was destined for someone/a family, desperate for food - and that, to me, is more shocking in this first world country.
