Getting dark!

Have you noticed how much earlier it seems to be getting dark- and quite suddenly too.
I usually walk Rosie before bedtime, anytime between 9 and 10 but tonight it’s dark outside and not yet 9 o clock !
Autumn is really on the way it seems.

Yes, I've noticed that when I wake up at about 4.30 am, it's now still dark so no going out into the garden with a cup of tea to keep the birds company as they start the day! Still dark at 5.30/6am. Same with the evenings, can't now see to read out in the garden until 9.30/10 pm - it's now sunset time at about 8.15. But that's unfortunately part of the cycle of the year. I think it's harder to accept the coming of autumn (melancholy season as a precursor to the, for me, dark depression of winter), because this summer has been so disappointing and never really seemed to get off the ground.
I do try to look forward to autumn and winter events as a way of getting through those miserable months, but last year none of those were possible because of lockdown (Halloween, Bonfire night, xmas events etc) and there are depressing rumours being leaked that if covid infection levels warrant it, there will be lockdowns in autumn half term and over the Xmas period.
I'm a spring and summer person, even though I was born in November, and detest the darkness and claustrophobia of winter 'coziness', 'snuggling' and thick winter clothes.

BlueBelle
So so depressing
Totally with you on that one. God I hate winter. So long and boring with that wretched festival in the middle…^

Totally agree with you both!!!

Yes, isn’t it weird how it does this every year? grin

Much prefer this weather to the heatwaves being experienced by other countries.

I'm in the love Autumn and winter camp, I really struggle to breathe and do anything when it's hot.

Grandma70s Thu 19-Aug-21 12:08:44

I love it! When the nights start drawing in I feel excited and thrilled the way many people do in Spring. I love the cosiness, the idea that staying in is fine and you don’t feel you should be out doing something.

Autumn is by far my favourite season. I prefer the clothes, too.

a lot of you dont seem to realise that our calendar is wrong . if you google it .you will see why . even though my birthday is in sept its as the ninth month ,when in true it is the 7th month . (sept is seven) the calenders changed in 1752 and the calender lost roughly 12 days .plus the 2 months .so yes it will get dark about the first week of august .i notice a change in the weather too ,it kind of gets chilly in the evenings ...

Imavinhoops73 Thu 19-Aug-21 12:11:46

Autumn is my favourite season.
I love this time of year.
Cosy dark evenings. And the countdown to Christmas. Fantastic!

The nights started drawing in after the Summer Equinox in June. Cloud cover can also make the evenings appear darker as they block out the moonlight.

Uncanny ???

GrauntyHelen Thu 19-Aug-21 13:13:19

It's the same every year but every year it takes me by surprise ! As soon as we get to school going back in Central Scotland it's much darker

It was still light here in NE Scotland as I waved DD and kids off yesterday evening, but it definitely felt autumnal. I swear my large, now bare, rose bush was still in bloom this time last year. I do like a bit of warmth, but summers here often quite disappointing.

Tizliz Thu 19-Aug-21 13:36:53

I'll ask DH but we could be listening all morning Tizliz ??

I have one like that!

Theoddbird Thu 19-Aug-21 13:42:50

Mawbe I am not stupid I am 70 years old and am English born and bred. I am well aware how the seasons work. We lose a minute or two of sunlight every day after the Summer Solstice. I was pointing out that that the cloudy skies of late just make it appear darker than it actually is. Why do people copy and paste posts when answering rather than just stating the name of the person they are answering?

SillyNanny321 Thu 19-Aug-21 14:33:45

Only thing I like about cold & dark coming is that my next door neighbour, who says she can play her music as loud as she wants & when she wants, will shut her front & back doors & stop sharing what she thinks is music with the whole street!

I don't mind it getting dark earlier or light later, as to me that has always been the signs of the new academic year approaching and even now that I am a pensioner the old exitement still rears its head.

It does however sadden me, when as is the case this year, the weather turns wet, cold and windy in August instead of still being hot summer.

Diane7 Thu 19-Aug-21 15:28:03

I really dislike the cold dark winter nights, we are still in August for goodness sake! It's times like this I wish that I lived abroad, I did for 2 years but missed family ?

LynneH Thu 19-Aug-21 15:45:57

My beloved mother always used to say "it's getting late early these days". Somehow, we knew what she meant

threexnanny Thu 19-Aug-21 16:01:53

The eight- legged beasties think it is Autumn and are moving in already!

Shropshirelass Thu 19-Aug-21 16:49:38

Yes, we had heavy cloud cover making it worse! Where did summer go, I think I missed it!

songstress60 Thu 19-Aug-21 17:22:57

The darkness is awful, and so is the wintry weather in August. I don't like autunm. Give me spring.

Juicywords Thu 19-Aug-21 17:37:24

Maybe we’ll have an Indian summer in September. Let’s hope?

I identify with your first paragraph. I always loved going back to school.

I don’t care what the weather does, providing it’s not too hot. I do have lovely memories of returning to school on sunny September days, though, with conkers from the tree in our garden, an apple picked that morning, and pale purple Michaelmas daisies.

Same here in New England- getting darker earlier- really noticeable. I dislike that!
