Celebrity Endorsements

Is anyone out there actually influenced to buy anything due to celebrity endorsements?
Personally it has the opposite effect on me. I can’t stand a well known actress who is the face of Lancôme so I would never ever buy the perfume.
Flicking through the Style supplement of The Sunday Times ( or the Pseudsday Times as my late sister used to call it ) the reader is confronted by one sulking celebrity after another, toting an ugly handbag or dressed in a coat more suitable for Widow Twanky and the public are expected to be impressed.
How about you ? Do you buy fashion and accessories because your favourite actor/ celebrity endorses it ?

I don't think I'm influenced by celebrity endorsement, either for or against, but I suppose many must be or else the companies wouldn't pay them the big fees. Of course the best endorsement companies can get is the free one when, for example, Catherine is photographed wearing an item available on the high street which then sells out within days if not hours.

'Celebrity' endorsement is more likely to put me off buying something!

Anything with the word ‘celebrity’ has lost me straight away. All those awful books written by ‘celebs’. Tacky stuff . No way

Has the opposite effect on me, I would go out of my way to avoid purchasing anything suggested by an influencer.

I am with you, it puts me off buying things. Many celebrity endorsements are not what they appear to be and are scams anyway. I steer well clear of them.

Anything advertised by Phillip Schofield, I run a mile….

Perhaps they might influence younger people with money to burn but not an old baggage like me. Hopefully by now I have a mind of my own! I share JLF’s view of the contents of the ST Style supplement. Doesn’t take me long to flick through it (uninfluenced) these days.

Was reading the Duchess of Bedford’s autobiography and she mentions doing an advert for a brand of biscuit that she hated, but the money was most welcome.

I am less likely to buy something if a celebrity advertises it.
Maybe I just like being awkward...

I dont usually read books written by celebrities (or ghost written) but I have just enjoyed one of Graham Norton's books which I assume he wrote himself.
And enjoyed 'his' wine. I presume he nurtured the vines, picked the grapes and made the wine himself, of course.

Otherwise, no. I really dislike the fact that actors are used for voiceovers for adverts too - give an out-of-work actor a chance to earn some money!

There's a perfume advert that annoys me intensely at the moment too. They may or may not be celebs but the women are dressed up to the nines in the countryside and singing in a dramatic fashion. Can't remember the perfume though!

Grumble over. ?

I also never buy perfume named after a celebrity. I find it very off putting for some reason.

honeyrose Sun 14-Nov-21 10:09:14

Calistemon, is the perfume ad you’re talking about the Natalie Portman endorsed one? She pouts and says “what would you do for love?” at the end of the ad. Beautifully photographed and choreographed, but oh so cringey! ?

Pantglas2 Sun 14-Nov-21 10:10:32

Some of the most prevalent ads at the moment are for gambling and it breaks my heart that famous sportsmen are promoting it.

The damage done to a lot of families by this ‘hobby’ is a hidden secret and there are many more wholesome things they could advertise if they need the income, which many don’t of course.

Celebrity endorsements certainly don't tempt me to buy particular products. On the contrary, if a manufacturer uses a celebrity to advertise their goods the price is usually extortionate due to the contractual payments to the celebrity. I much prefer to support small businesses to be honest.

Do you mean the Daisy one Calistemon? I have to turn that one to mute.

I have never bought anything because it was endorsed by a "celebrity" and I don't know anyone who has but presumably some people must be influenced by them otherwise companies wouldn't use them

Beswitched Sun 14-Nov-21 10:28:41

Some of them are so daft. Are we really supposed to believe that Eva Longoria dyes her own hair?

And Holly Willoughby and Davina McCall?

Celebrity endorsements puts me completely off a product
I don’t think I ve ever bought anything because of an advert but all the ones currently running make me feel quite yukky

I really really get so annoyed because you know they are just greedily paying lip service to the product to get money money money
How to put us off eh

timetogo2016 Sun 14-Nov-21 10:45:04

I tend to think of the money those celebs get paid would make the product more expensive,so no,i never buy anything advertised by them.
I bet they have never even tried them out.

Celebrity…in my opinion one of, if not the most, over used word in the English language. Who are most of these people?

Exactly....and mostly boring talentless trash that give a bad name to those few who are talented. We never see those endorsing anything. They don’t need to.

I'm not sure, they're all awful!

Just looked it up and it's Valentino and Lady Gaga singing in a posh frock in the countryside. As you do.
Who knew?
(Possibly everyone but me ?)

Scones Sun 14-Nov-21 13:27:15

I've got to the stage where I barely know who the celebrities are so they are wasted on me anyway. I'm not even influenced by adverts whether they feature a celebrity or not.
