I assume that bail has been refused in case she skips the country, so she remains in custody. As soon as there is a trial she should be in normal prison, until then I’m afraid she is stuck.

I thought that. I’m not in prison and my eyebrows are appalling. Considering her family’s history I am not surprised she is thought to be a flight risk. I read in today’s Observer that she is under constant supervision with a light on constantly, because they fear she may kill herself, as Epstein did.

My friend, before she died, corresponded with and visited several people who were long term inmates in American prisons. She would describe the poor conditions in which they were often held and the stories were pretty grim and heartbreaking to be honest. If Ghislane Maxwell, with all of her connections and resources is in this situation I can't imagine how things are for poorer, ordinary folk.

Is your OP based on the article in today’s daily mail Bluebellwould? I read it and noticed Sarah Vine had a piece which I didn’t read. My thought was the DM is setting itself up either to champion GM if it’s a not guilty finding or the other if she’s found guilty.

Prisons are fairly grim in Europe and the US. She’s a flight/suicide risk so remanded. Given the serious charges she faces, what else is possible

Her brother was on TV recently protesting about the conditions in which she is being kept. It doesn’t seem right that she should be treated that way pre trial but then prisons aren’t very nice places and they wouldn’t grant bail. I don’t think she helped her case by hiding out in a remote area prior to her discovery and subsequent arrest.

Conditions may be grim but why should she be treated any differently than another person charged with serious offences who is a flight risk

The point is, though, that although Ghislaine Maxwell was in hiding before her arrest she did not flee the country when she could easily have done so, and it is unfair to condemn her because of the actions of some of her family.
Her legal team have tried three, possibly four times to get her conditions of imprisonment before trial altered, and each time it has been refused. It does seem as though she is being judged and punished before the trial.

She wanted to stay in a luxury hotel whilst on bail, I believe - would that all prisoners could have that chance!!
Anything conditions less than the height of luxury are going to seem grim to someone accustomed to only the best.
Of course she'd have been spirited away if she'd been allowed more freedom - she knows far too much.

She should not be abused, of course we know that, but who knows how that happened if she is bruised? Presumably she is watched constantly and any abuse would be stopped.

I haven't seen a recent picture of her - I can't think they'd let her have a pair of tweezers with her in prison!

She apparently has lived in the US since the early 1990s ans has US citizenship. I feel that if you embrace the US way of life you have to accept its warts as well as its good things. So if that's the way that the US treats its prisoners, then hard luck.

(Intrigued to discover that she has US, French and British citizenship...)

If Epstein killed himself, he must have guessed it was death or the rest of his life in prison so to me, it suggests, that what he/they got up to was pretty nasty. I feel very sorry for the abused girls.
Didn't Ghislaine set herself up for the current situation by going on the run and then hiding? She probably thought that was safer than trying to flee the country, airport security is pretty tight these days.

Didn't Ghislaine set herself up for the current situation by going on the run and then hiding? She probably thought that was safer than trying to flee the country, airport security is pretty tight these days.

Yes, of course, but the charges are serious enough for her to be remanded in custody.
Even if innocent, she knows enough to bring down a lot of other people and could be helped to disappear.

I read the article and some of it didn't add up. She claimed the "creepy guards" were watching her shower - she is on suicide watch so they have no choice, she claimed the guards were cruel to her yet later said they played games together and "there are always smiles".

I have no doubt it is a culture shock for her, bearing in mind her former lifestyle, but I don't think the conditions are any worse for her than they are for other prisoners. Whether those conditions should be changed is a question for the American authorities.

I've seen this in several places now not just the Mail. If its true then its appalling, no one should be treated like that in prison.

I dont want people accused of serious crimes being abused, if we support that then I dont see that great a difference between those who abuse.

If she is in solitary confinement and a suicide risk it is pretty grim, most would be very unhappy and miserable, as for abuse, it’s easy to bruise yourself to get sympathy, food would not be nouvelle cuisine that she is used to either.

She had better get used to it, if she were a regular prisoner other inmates would probably be a bigger risk than the guards.

I said nothing about her guilt or innocence, Lincslass. Just that she has to put up with US jail conditions.
